Dakar is considered to be the king of all rally competitions. The journey began in 1978, just a year after Thierry Sabine was lost in the Libyan Deseret. From his experience of being entrapped in the sandy dunes, he decided to share his fascination of the landscape with others. He planned a challenging Route that would start at the Trocadero plaza in Paris, then cut across Europe and conclude in Dakar, Senegal.Senegal. In the first edition of the Dakar rally, 182 vehicles competed and traveled 10,000 kilometers in to unfamiliar territory. In 1992 there was a change in course and the rally did not end in Senegal instead they crossed the African continent and finished in Cape Town, South Africa. There have been other instances where the race did not finish in Dakar. In 2000 and 2003, the race ended in Egypt, withwith mystifying view of the pyramids in the background. The Dakar 2008 competition was canceled due to terrorist threats, with the safety of the drivers and fans in mind the organizers decided to take the Dakar Rally to South America. This was a great opportunity for the Dakar pilots to experience the beauty and wonders that South America has to offer. Argentina and Chile were the first hosts of the event and in 2012 Peru was added as final destination.event and in 2012 Peru was added as final destination.

The 34th Dakar rally will start on January 5th, 2013 and go on for fifteen days. The entire event covers more than 8,000 km, starting at the historical heart of Lima, Peru the pilots will trail the coast of the Pacific, heading southsouth through the sandy dunes. On the 6th day of the competi-tion, the drivers will come to the city of Calama, Chile, where they will begin their journey eastward across the magnificent Andes Mountains, making their way into ever-changing terrain of Argentina, where they will reach altitudes of 4,970 meters and endure temperatures as low as 15 degrees Celsius. From Cordoba, Argentina the drivers will head back westward once again crcrossing the Andes Mountains. This is when the driver’s endur-ance will really be put to the test as they voyage across the trea-cherous Atacama Desert, which is the driest desert in the world.

The last stages of the race will take the drivers down the Chilean coast and conclude in the capitol city of Santiago, Chile. On the following day there will be a very emotional award ceremony held in the historic PlazaPlaza de la Constitución. Although danger lurks at every turn of the race, it is the rush of adrenaline that attracts thrill seekers. There is no doubt that the Dakar experience is an intense test of courage and durability. As clearly sstated by the one who started it all, Thierry Sabine, Dakar is "A challenge for those who go, a dream for those who stay.” the Dakar 2013 will be no exception.

Maxxis sponsors several drivers that will be competing in the 2013 Dakar Rally. As we have done in the past we will celebrate in style, the opening of the world's toughest race. As with every competition, we wish the drivers and teams that will be representing the bright Maxxis colors, the best of luck.luck.In 2012, the Maxxis dinner-party for Dakar was a huge hit. Last year the event was held in Mar del Plata, Argentina and served as a liaison between different teams, pilots, mechanics and orga-nizers. All shared their experiences in an atmosphere of camara-derie. During the event, Maxxis displayed the tires that would be used in the competition by the teams. The Chica Maxxis girls of Chile participated in dancing, inter-views and pictures with the guests. The Chica Maxxis girls, un-doubtedly, added a touch of elegance and beauty to the event. Maxxis is planning on having another dinner party for its pilots and partners for the 2013 Dakar, and hopes to continue to be the bridge that unites and creates new bonds of friendship among the competitors of Dakar.

with a new vehicle after more than four months of training ... ready to face the challenge. The Bighorn is a radial construction

TEAM AZIMUT

SStatistics for Dakar indicate that rookies don’t reach the finishline…..but that failed to hold up with Team Azimut. When the Venezuelans participated for the first time in 2012 not only did they reach finish the race, but they brought home the trophy for Champions in their category T1.2. FFor Team Azimut, which was established in 2005 by Nunzio Coffaro, Alí Gómez, Arístides

Rojas, Sergio Marcano, Manuel Carvajal, and José Pérez, Dakar is a competition to prove your physi-cal and mental strength, and your logistics and mechanics skills. Having this in mind, Coffaro and his team will go to Dakar 2013 with this goal: “defend our title as Champions in our category, im-prove our scores and move up in the general category for trucks”.In this edition of Dakar 2013, Team Azimut will compete with their Toyota Hilux, which was built es-

pecially for the team, and they will use Maxxis Bighorn tires. Nunzio af-firmed that they always use these tires because of “its multifac-eted performance when riding through the sand dunes, rocky paths, dirt roads and asphalt”.Azimut is a word that comes from the Arabic "as-

sumut" meaning "direction", and honoring its name in Dakar 2012 was how Team Azimut kept on going, after their vehicle was com-

pletely overturned, the four tires facing up in a dune. However, at that terrifying moment for Nunzio Coffaro and his team, what they felt more than fear, was a concern for not being able to continue and complete the rally.Team Azimut not only demonstrated, in their first appearance in Dakar 2011, that they have the qualities to be champions, but also have a huge heart. This became clear when ththey were passing through Chile and found Tim Coronel,

another Maxxis pilot, stranded, because his vehicle’s gearbox broke. Team Azimut did not hesitate and towed him about 100 kilometers to the finish line that day. If we put this action into perspec-tive, Team Azimut forfeited their time and risked damaging their car but still helped Tim. With this said, we have to agree that Team Azimut lives by the Dakar spirit. Furthermore, a quote Nunzio Coffaro: "to win a Dakar is not a one-person-job." The Maxxis pilot seized the opportunity to thank the great team that stands behind him, "from the team manager to the assistant mechanic ... many thanks"

The desire to overcome the most ex-treme conditions and to become one of the first Peruvian pilots for cuatrimotor finishing, the Dakar is what inspires Ignacio Flores to compete in Dakar 2013.

The Peruvian pilot, refers to the phase when driving through Argentina as the most difficult due to the high tempera-tures and sandy plains. He will be using Maxxis tires RAZR2 for this competi-tion since “it has an excellent grip on dunes and rocky terrain and they are very reliable and do not break easily due to the six folds construction.

The spirit of camaraderie is also pres-ent in this Rally. As an example, Ignacio Flores told us that "in Dakar 2012, in phase 2, at only 3 kilometers from the finish line, they found a European quad pilot which engine had melted. “Our engine was overheating, but we still agagreed to tow him to the finish line". For Ignacio, in Dakar, your position at the end is not important, what is impor-tant is that you got there”.

His desire to try to be the best cuatrimotor pilot in the world was what motivated the Chilean pilot, Emiliano Fuenzalida, to com-pete in Dakar 2013. His fifirst appearance in what he describes as "the toughest compe-tition in the world" was in 2011, and then in 2012.Driving his Yamaha Raptor 700 and using Maxxis tires, Emiliano Fuenzalida prepares to face the challenges and extreme conditions in Dakar 2013. Having in mind the difficult and varied terrain and the temperatures that they will face, is the reason why he chose Maxxis tires, "I chose the Razr 2.0 as it is a super com-petitipetitive tire that maintains the temperature and its shape in the most extreme conditions." he said. In Dakar 2012, Fuenzalida was listed as one of the best in his category, but still could not finish the race after falling in a ditch more than three meters high. His challenge: finish-ing in the top five in Dakar 2013.

Arriving in fourth place in Dakar 2012 was not enough for Ignacio Casale. The young Maxxis pilot has the desire, the dream and the pas-sion to position himself among the top three in the next edition Dakar 2013. He will com-pete in Dakar 2013 riding his quad and using Maxxis RAZR 2 tires. He chose these tires for their strength, "because they are very hard and do not break."Ignacio mentioned some of the difficulties that he will face in Dakar 2013: the cold, the heat, the number of miles, the loneliness, the pain in his hands, and the few hours of sleep. Casale is not threatened by these challenges and looks forward to a bright future when he will be one of the best pilots in his category, in the world.in the world. We can only predict success and a promising future to this young man who is guided by this mantra: "Follow your dream, your passion and accomplish things that only existed in dreams.....use Maxxis and you will go places."

To establish a new record in Dakar is why Daniel Mazzucco will face his fourth participation in this renowned rally. If he man-ages to win the 4X4 Quads category in Dakar 2013, he will be the first pilot in all categories, to win three consecutive Dakar in just four appearances. And talking about the different phases and difficult situations in Dakar, Mazzucco mentioned what he and many others call the “Dakariano” spirit, referring to the gesture of helping others even if this is your competition, "the truth is that there is a lot of support among the pilots during all the phases.” For example, in Dakar 2011 I pulled quads pilot, Sergio de la Fuente, out of the mud”.DanielDaniel Mazzucco will use Maxxis Bighorn tires, and said that "without a doubt Maxxis tires are the best products for the Dakar, they are reliable, have great durability, and strength. Maxxis is a very important part of my achievements”.

It is no secret that that in recent years we have paying more attention to the cata-strophic damages that are affecting our planet. Unfortunately, most of the destruc-tion was caused by humans, and even more alarming it could have been prevented.

According to the data obtained by NASA, the projections indicate that the extent of the world’s increasing consumption of fossil fuels and greenhouse gases continue to rise. The temperature of the Earth’s surface could rise between 2 ° C and 6 ° C by the end of the century. This warming effect will be unavoidable, because our planet has not yet fully adjusted to the environmental changes that have already oc-curred.

Dakar 2013 goes green! The event organizers were very careful to establish the route for this race. With the assistance of relevant government agencies from Argentina, Chile and Peru, the organizers were able to trace a path that will not harm the sensitive areas that are being preserved.

AAt Maxxis, we have committed ourselves to help preserve the environment, leading us to create the "Maxxis Green tires". Maxxis Green Tires are made with This line of tires was developed by using special materials and designs to improve our vehicles performance by using less fuel, and increase the durability of the tires, so that can be replaced less often. Our green tires offer great benefits for the environment without affecting the performance!
