“I participated in a HSBC Bank competition for poets-translators where the prize was to come to Canada and study the ELC program in SFU. The HSBC Bank arranged for my study here. I have had the opportunity to study Oral Skills, Listening practice and Canadian studies. I must say that I’m very delighted to be here and I’m satisfied with program. I like the unique way it is run. The teachers challenge us and each class is full of interesting facts and activities. Each teacher knows the abilities of individual students. I’m sure that my English has improved along with my ability to connect with a variety of people and cultures.” — Mussabekova (Kazakhstan)

Message from the Dean Welcome to the English Language and Culture Program at Simon Fraser University (SFU ELC). SFU is consistently ranked as one of the top universities in Canada and has a long tradition of providing quality instruction to assist people in developing and achieving their educational and personal goals. We welcome you as a member of our community where you will work with others to gain first-hand information about, and insight into, Canadian university life. As a member of the SFU ELC community, you will have access to the university’s facilities: computer labs, libraries, fitness facilities, health and counselling services, and activity clubs at all three SFU campuses. While you’re here, please visit the Centre for International Students, operated by the Student Services Society, where you will find plenty of opportunities to connect with other students- both Canadian and international. “I had a wonderful experience studying in the English Language & Culture Program at Simon

Fraser University. The experience was unique and helped me to improve my English in a setting

of diverse cultures, ethnicities, and customs. I didn’t find just classmates, I had the pleasure of

establishing strong friendships with people from all over the world. My English improved a great deal

being in an English language only environment. I hope you join the ELC program at SFU in the future!”

— Felipe Varela Sanchez (Ecuador)

a unique way that I’m now
