The New Wonders of the World

Opinion Poll: The New Wonders of the World In 2001, New Open World Corporation (NOWC) started a selection of two hundred monuments such as the Eiffel Tower, Sydney Opera House, the Great Wall of China, Stonehenge, Easter Island, the Alhambra and the Colosseum, among others. This corporation made a list of monuments from all over the world and then a shortlist of twenty-one possible candidates for the New Seven Wonders of the World. What do we mean by ‘wonders’? They are human creations that cause admiration and respect.

People could vote for their choice on the website: www.new7wonders.com. One of the landmarks was an honorary candidate — the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt. These pyramids are the only construction that is also on the list of the Classical Wonders of the World. NOWC announced the results of the opinion poll on July 7, 2007, in Lisbon, Portugal. Each monument represents a virtue: openness, passion, joy, knowledge, perseverance, protection and dedication.
