Third activity

Read this article about the most famous social addiction in the 21th century.

Smoking is one of the worst things kids or adults can do to their bodies. Yet everysingle day about 3,900 kids between the ages 12 and 17 start smoking. Most middleschool students don't smoke — only about 1 in 16 does. And most high school studentsdon't smoke — about 1 in 5 does.

Some kids start smoking just because they're curious. Others like the idea of doingsomething dangerous — something grownups don't want them to do. Still others knowlots of people who smoke and they think it's a way to act or look like an adult.Fortunately, fewer people are starting smoking than a few years ago.

Maybe that's because more and more people have learned that smoking and tobaccouse can cause cancer and heart disease. But sometimes kids can't really worry about afuture illness.

Using tobacco eats up a lot of money, too. A pack of cigarettes costs $4.50, on aver-age. That means, even if you buy just one pack a week, you'll spend $234 in a year. Some people smoke a pack a day, that is $1,642! That's a lot of CDs, computer games, and clothes you could buy instead.(1 euro = 1,30$)

After reading the article, answer the following questions, true or false :

1. Cigarettes are cancer-causing agents.2. Nicotine is a poison found in tobacco.3. Cigarette smoking can lead to heart disease.4. Smoke from cigarette harms only the smoker.5. Peer pressure is the reason many young people between the ages of 12 and 17

begin experimenting with smoking.6. Tobacco was expensive some years ago, but now it is cheaper.7. A few years ago there were more people starting smoking than today.

Comment on this cartoon with your partner about the love story of this couple.

Read these Valentine's Day Jokes and choose with your partner the funniest joke.

A little boy asked his father, "Daddy, how much does it cost to get married?"And the father replied, "I don't know, son, I'm still paying for it."

After a quarrel, a wife said to her husband, "You know, I was a fool when I married you."And the husband replied, "Yes, dear, but I was in love and didn't notice it."

First Guy (proudly): "My wife's an angel!" Second Guy: "You're lucky, mine's still alive."

What did Frankenstein say to his girlfriend?"Be my valenstein!"

What did the paper clip say to the magnet on Valentine's Day?"I find you very attractive."

Third activity

Read the following text about the spending of the present giving. You can use thedictionary for the new words.

The great Valentine rip-offGuardian online

On a normal week the Interflora website allows you to buy your loved one a dozen redroses for £39.50. However, for one week only, there is a Valentine's special price: thesame roses cost £55 plus a £4.50 delivery charge.

How can Interflora justify the 40% increase? "It's all about supply and demand. Thegrowers and suppliers of roses put their prices up threefold in this period." says PhilCarey from Interflora.

According to Yorkshire Bank, we will spend £18.6m on cards. Chocolates, a firm favour-ite, will set us back £35.3m. And we'll spend nearly £140m on those roses and otherbouquets.

Unfortunately, opting for a single rose rather than a bouquet will still put a thorn in yourwallet: Interflora charges £20 plus delivery.

Thorntons has a florist service too, but the cheapest bouquet seems to be the "love andkisses" arrangement at £30. Opt for the real thing - it will be cheaper.

Lovers of chocolate may enjoy a 24-hour chocoholic experience costing £199. And a ro-mantic champagne balloon flight for two will be £349.

For people who haven't yet had the courage to approach that special person, ActivitySuperstore is offering flirting lessons for £129.

(1 euro = 0,83£)

Underline examples of conditional sentences in the text.

Do you think that worth it? Do people spend too much with this celebration? Discussin pairs.

[Chorus]I keep telling you that Johnny's eating/hitting meThats why I'm late/lately for school (but you never listen)Instead you always seem to end/and up blaming me for things I didn't do (For what it's worth)

I didn't even want to tell you anything in case it mad/made things worse (Just so you know)Every time I say that Johnny's hitting meHey Mom and Dad ithurts/hearts

Everyday keeps on repeating like the record on/own/one replaySlowly getting off the bus with Johnny waiting at the gatesLike a friend smiling and waiveing andcalled/cold him out his namePut his arm around his neck whats up now gimme all your changeToo/two/to afraid to make a scene/sin or plead with him to let him goHe just takes whatevers coming, feels the pain with every blowTrys in vain to make himself be heard as soon as he gets home

But everythings still the same...[Chorus]

FoodDo we live to eat or eat to live? That is the question. I remember as a child growing up inBritain having fish and chips or baked beans on toast at least twice a week on my lap whilewatching my favourite car toon. Of course I enjoyed my food but it wasn’t something I oftentalked about. Now I’m not blaming my cultur e for my lack of interest in food at an early age.Perhaps my silence was due to the fact that I didn’t know anything about food. How manychildren know that prawns only turn pink when they are cooked and that tuna does not comefrom a can? Now after having lived in Southern Europe, Asia and Australia I find myself talk-ing about food all the time. The world has seduced my taste buds and opened my mouth.Food that’s plain and simple is often the best but not always so. For many of us food is aneed. For others, especially women, food is a friend. Yet to some others food is an enemy.Cravings grip us at all the wrong times while we struggle to follow a strict diet that turned all

our favourite desserts into mortal sins. There are others who regard food as an investment. To them, food has some kind of special powers that can control their lives, for better or forworse. If that’s the case, it’s time to change and make food work for us.Let’s start by using food the way you would use a pencil or a pair of sciss ors. We begin usingfood as a tool. Like tools, some food works well for some tasks and some are specially de-signed to accomplish others.Let’s say you’re feeling down. You had a tough day or a tiff with a best friend that drove youround the bend. You decide to treat yourself to a bar of chocolate – nothing like chocolate toperk you up. Unfortunately you’re setting yourself up for a higher dose of the blues. That’sbecause chocolate bars have a hefty amount of fat and sugar – which takes a long time to

digest and can draw energy away from your brain – and caffeine which will temporarily boost

your mood and alertness but send you crashing back down as soon as its effect starts to wearoff.Does this mean snacking is a bad idea when you’re feeling down? No t at all. You just have todo it wisely. In place of a chocolate bar, have a slice of toast with chunky marmalade. Theninstead of fat and caffeine you’ve just given yourself a dose of vitamin C that has been shownto fight depression. In addition, marmalade is loaded with the type of sugar that spurs therelease of mood-lifting chemicals in the brain. In fact you can manage your mood and boost your brainpower, metabolism, even your sex life,by eating the right food. Whatever your goals, you can custom-design a diet to help you meetthem. Here’s how taking control of your food can help you take control of your life.
