Read pages 32 and 34 from Michael Morpurgo’s version of Beowulf.
As you read, make a list of all the words you don’t know the meaning of.
When you have finished reading, use a dictionary to look up what each word means.
Finally, reread the pages again but this time you will know what each word means.

1. Morpurgo has tried to use an old fashioned style of writing. Why do you think he has done this? The original Beowulf is very old and he tried to be similar to that style of writing.
2. Find and copy a phrase that Morpurgo has written that sounds like it was written a thousand years ago. Any phrase that you think is not often written that way now. For example: ‘Only naked strength could end his unnatural life’.
3. Name one good thing about Morpurgo writing in this style and one bad thing. This is up to you. I thought that it is difficult to understand some of it but it feels authentic and dramatic.

• What does pinioned mean? To hold someone or restrain someone.
• What sentence tells you that Grendel knew he was going to die. Grendel understood this, and he knew that he was weakening, that his end must be near.

• Why was Grendel not killed by swords and spears? No steel or sword could pierce his enchanted hide.

Prepositions – when, where, why.Every sentence needs a subject and a verb.

A preposition is used when the subject of a sentence and another noun are linked. They tell you when, where or why something happened.
The dog sat on the rug.
Prepositions tell you time (when), the place (where) or the cause (why something happens).
