We would like to accompany you in the preparation for your arrival and stay in Krakow in July 2016; that’s why the Volunteers Department prepared a special guide for you. Here you will find useful information about Poland, advice on how to prepare for a long journey, tips about life in Poland, as well as a mini Polish dictionary. The guide, apart from practical information, also contains a short section on spiritual preparation. We hope that your participation in World Youth Day will be a time of strengthening your faith, experiencing God’s love and discovering your place in the Church. For the time of preparation for World Youth Day, we constantly remember you in our prayers, and we would like to ask you to pray for us, so that the meeting is held according to God’s plan.

VOLUNTEERING REGULATIONS OF WORLD YOUTH DAY KRAKOW 2016

Glossarya. Beneficiary – this is to be understood as the Archdiocese of Krakow, being the legal person of the church as understood in art. 7 item 1 section 2 on the law from May 17 1989 on the relation of the state to the Catholic Church in Poland; the Beneficiary is the organizer of World Youth Day 2016 in Krakow,b. Coordinator – this is to be understood as the person authorized by the Beneficiary, who deals with the recruitment of Volunte-ers, oversees their work and provides sup-port,c. Agreement – the agreement, referred to in art. 44 item 1 of the Act, concluded be-tween the Volunteer, and the Beneficiary, the regulations of the conditions of provi-sion of services of volunteering by the Vo-lunteer, for the Beneficiaryd. Regulations – Volunteering Regulations of World Youth Day Krakow 2016,e. Website – www.krakow2016.comf. Participant – participant of the Eventg. Act – this is to be understood as the Act from April 24 2003 on Public Benefit and Volunteer Work (Journal of Laws No. 10, item 1536, as later amended)h. Event – World Youth Day 2016 in Krakow

1. Volunteer of WYD Krakow 2016 A volunteer of World Youth Day Krakow 2016 is a volunteer in the understanding of the provisions referred to in the Act, who voluntarily enlisted themselves, so as to vo-luntarily and without compensation provide services for the Beneficiary in connection to the organization and service of the Event

with the principles set out in the Act, the present Regulations and the Agreement. The volunteer in the understanding of the present Regulations is solely a person, ac-cording to whom all conditions set out in detail in the present Regulations are fulfil-led as well as who became registered in the registration system, where the registration process for the volunteer finished with the positive acceptance of the person volunte-ering by the Beneficiary.

2. Types of Volunteers of the EventVolunteers are able to realize their services in the framework of volunteering according to the following distribution:a. In terms of territorial coverage, the follo-wing are distinguished:- Parish volunteers,- Diocesan volunteers,- National volunteers,- International Volunteersb. In terms of time of provision of service in the context of volunteering, the following are differentiated:- Short-term Volunteers – providing volun-teering services for the Beneficiary in the context of the preparations for the Event, only during the period of time from July 18 2016 to August 1 2016,- Long-term Volunteers – providing volun-teer services for the Beneficiary in the con-text of the preparations for the Event, for a period of time longer than one month. The condition necessary for receiving the status of long-term volunteer is the signing of the Agreement within 7 days from the day of

signing up at the registration office of the Beneficiary.

3. Short-term volunteersa. The volunteer is obligated to identify themselves by wearing a specially prepared Volunteer shirt or dedicated identificator, whereby the volunteer is authorized to iden-tify themselves with the indicated signs so-lely when performing services in the context of volunteering,b. The volunteer cannot speak in the name of the Beneficiary, without separate autho-rization by the Organizing Committee of WYD Krakow 2016, working in the context of the internal organizational structures of the Beneficiary,c. The Beneficiary agrees, taking into account the individual Volunteer’s needs, to provide the Volunteer with accommodation, food, transportation, insurance as well as any ma-terials needed to provide services as part of volunteering – in the time period in which the Volunteer will provide the services in the context of volunteering, but no longer than in the time period from July 18 2016 to August 1 2016 the Volunteer will be covered with insurance within the time and with the conditions indicated in the insurance policy, the content of which the Volunteer can re-view with their Coordinator. The coverage of the insurance, referred to in the previous sentence, will include health insurance, as-sistance insurance, civil liability insurance in private life as well as accident insurance.d. Volunteers who are also clergy will not be able at the time of providing services as volunteers also provide priestly ministry at the same time.

4. Objectives of volunteeringThe objectives of volunteering, referred to in the present Regulations, taking into ac-

count the specific nature of the Event, the time as well as the circumstances of provi-ding services as volunteers, are in particular:a. Propagation of the idea and objectives of the Event, indicated by the Beneficiary, as the Organizer,b. Promotion of volunteering, including help with the organizational structures of volun-teering,c. Help with organizing the Event as well as with its procedure, in particular through or-ganizational and informational work for the benefit of pilgrims.d. Supporting each campaign organized by the Beneficiary, which serves for the better preparation of Participants for the Event,e. Spreading Christian values, getting fami-liar with, sustaining and promoting natio-nal tradition in the communities where the Volunteers resides, works and performs as-signed services in the space of being a vo-lunteer,f. Suitable formation and training of Volun-teers.g. Work for disabled people by helping them participate in the Event as well as with com-munity integration.h. Work for integration as well as the de-velopment of contacts and cooperation be-tween communities,i. Work related to culture, art, protection of cultural goods and national heritage.

5. Acceptance of Volunteersa. An adult person may become a Volunte-er of the Event; the Beneficiary has set the required date by which they must reach the age of majority as June 30, 2016.b. A Volunteering Candidate is obligated to fill out the form available on the Website as well as- Attach a letter of recommendation (from a parish priest, the Prior of an Order or coor-

dinator of a movement/society of apostolic life). In the case of international Volunteer candidates (whose place of permanent resi-dency is not Poland) this letter should also be signed by a diocesan bishop or Episcopal Conference of the given country.- Attach their picture as well as a scan of an identity document- Attach a scan of their visa (this solely ap-plies to Volunteering candidate obligated to have a visa for entry to the territory of the Republic of Poland),- Paying the participation fee according to the appropriate rates, designated on the Website.c. A Volunteer is obligated to conclude a se-parate agreement with the Beneficiary,d. A Volunteer is obligated to make a state-ment that they have read and understood the Regulationse. The Beneficiary reserves the right to choose only certain candidates as Volun-teers, with whom it will work within the framework of volunteering, without at the same time providing the reasons why other candidates were refused. The choice of Vo-lunteer is dependent in particular on the actual needs of the Beneficiary in coopera-tion of the Event as well as other individual predispositions of the candidate of being a Volunteer, including the fulfillment by the candidate of the conditions referred to in the Regulations.f. Long-term Volunteers will be appointed to provide services in the context of volunte-ering in various time periods and to many tasks assigned in advance,g. In the name of the Beneficiary, the Volun-teering Section of the Organizing Commit-tee of World Youth Day 2016 is authorized and established by the Beneficiary, and wor-king in the context of its structures to con-tact Volunteers.

6. Responsibilities of the Beneficiary – en-titlements of the VolunteerThe Beneficiary has the obligation to:a. inform the Volunteer of risks to health and safety related to providing services as well as principles of protection against ha-zards;b. ensure for the Volunteer, concerning wor-ker principles specified in separate regula-tions, safe and hygienic conditions of the services they provide, in this – depending on the kind of services and hazards related with their being provided – appropriate measures for individual protection;c. cover, under worker principles specified in separate regulations, work-related travel expenses and subsistence of Volunteers.In addition, the Volunteer has the right to:d. Free of charge volunteer training in the time of the provision of services in the con-text of volunteering – insofar as they prove to be necessary to the provision of services specified in the Agreement,e. Information about the evaluation of the work performed by them in the context of volunteering.

7. Responsibilities of the VolunteerThe responsibilities of the Volunteer firstly include:a. Fulfillment of the services in the context of volunteering, assigned by the Beneficiary in the context of the Agreement, in a con-scientious manner.b. Provision of services in the context of vo-lunteering in a manner consistent with the character of the Event as well as with re-spect to the good name of the Beneficiary.c. Provision of tasks assigned by the Coor-dinator, indicated in the Agreement or in-dicated in another way by the Beneficiary, entrusted to them as well as reporting the effects and the course of functioning of the-se activities,

d. Immediate notification of the Coordinator of any sort of obstacles in the realization in the assigned services in the context of vo-lunteering, which in a real way prevent their being provided in a proper manner.e. Close cooperation with the Coordinator in the provision of assigned services, among these in particular reporting any doubts re-garding assigned services in the context of volunteering,f. Caring for equipment assigned by the Be-neficiary, as well as caring for the preserva-tion of order in the place of the provision of services in the context of volunteering.g. The volunteer is responsible for using pro-tective measures appropriate for the place-ment, in which they are performing activities in the context of volunteering.

8. CertificateAt the request of the Volunteer, the Bene-ficiary can put together a written opinion about the provision of services by the Vo-lunteer, and also provide a written state-ment about the provision of services by the Volunteer, within the time period of service provision – the so called certificate.

9. ResignationIn the case of resignation, the Volunteer is obligated to immediately inform the Benefi-ciary of this fact.

10. Dismissal from the function of Volun-teerFailure of meeting responsibilities taken on by the Volunteer in the context of the Agreement, or in the context of separate arrangements with the Beneficiary - can result in temporary or permanent removal of the Volunteer from providing services in the context of volunteering. The tempora-ry or permanent removal of the Volunteer from providing services is the decision of

the Beneficiary in each case, and in cases of urgency, the Coordinator can independently make a decision about the removal from the provision of services. The decision about permanent removal of a Volunteer from the provision of services ought to be made after hearing the Volunteer.

Removal of a Volunteer from providing services or their resignation from providing them or a break from providing them, will result in their losing the right to benefits, referred to in section 3 point c of the Regu-lations, without the possibility of claiming a refund on any of the amount paid earlier in the participation fee.

He has confidence in you and is counting on you! He has so many things to say to each of you... Do not be afraid to look into His eyes, full of infinite love for you. Open yourselves to His merciful gaze, so ready to forgive all your sins. A look from Him can change your lives and heal the wounds of your souls. His eyes can quench the thirst that dwells deep in your young hearts, a thirst for love, for peace, for joy and for true happiness. Come to Him and do not be afraid! Come to Him and say from the depths of your hearts: “Jesus, I trust in You!”. Let yourselves be touched by His boundless mercy, so that in turn you may become apostles of mercy by your actions, words and prayers in our world, wounded by selfishness, hatred and so much despair.

Carry with you the flame of Christ’s merciful love – as saint John Paul II said – in every sphere of your daily life and to the very ends of the earth. In this mission, I am with you with my encouragement and prayers. I entrust all of you to Mary, Mother of Mercy, for this last stretch of the journey of spiritual preparation for the next WYD in Krakow. I bless all of you from my heart.

His grace perfects, strengthens and elevates that vocation and enables us to serve others without reward, satisfaction or any recompense. Here we see something of the grandeur of our human calling: to serve others with the same freedom and generosity which characterizes God himself.

We also become visible instruments of his love in a world that still profoundly yearns for that love amid the poverty, loneliness, marginalization and ignorance that we see all around us.

The service you have given during these days brings to mind the mission of Saint John the Baptist, who prepared the way for Jesus. Every one of you, each in his or her own way, was a means enabling thousands of young people to “prepare the way” to meet Jesus. And this is the most beautiful service we can give as missionary disciples. To prepare the way so that all people may know, meet and love the Lord.

To you who in these days responded with such readiness and generosity to the call to be volunteers for World Youth Day, I say:

May you always be generous with God and with others: one loses nothing thereby, but gains great enrichment in life.God calls you to make definitive choices, and he has a plan for each of you: to discover that plan and to respond to your vocation is to move toward personal fulfilment. God calls each of us to be holy, to live his life, but he has a particular path for each one of us. (…) I have confidence in you and I pray for you. Have the courage to swim against the tide. The theme for the 31st World Youth Day in Krakow, 2016, are the following words:

“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy” (Matthew 5:7)

The Holy Father Francis has chosen the fifth from the eight beautitudes, recounted by Jesus in His Sermon on the shore of the Sea of Galilee.

The Pope wanted to underline the importance of Jesus’ words on the essence of happiness, as they are the heart of our Lord’s teaching. Jesus, in His first Sermon, left us eight tips on how our attitude can bring people closer to the Kingdom of Heaven.

The relation between the place of meeting of the young people in Krakow and the topic of the meeting leads the pilgrims to the Spark of Mercy which has been radiating from the sanctuary of Łagiewniki on the whole Church since the first revelation of Merciful Jesus to St. Faustina.

Krakow is widely known as the world center of devotion to Divine Mercy; young people who will come to Poland will surely want to visit the place of revelation, the tomb of St. Faustina and the sanctuary - the place where St. John Paul II entrusted the world to Divine Mercy.

What is interesting is that the fifth beatitude also recalls the first two years of Pope Francis’ pontificate, which is when he tried to show to the Church the love of God towards every human being and the necessity to showing mercy to each other.

COLOURS

The Protagonists of the World Youth Day are: Christ and the youth. The essence of this event is to meet with God and other people. Hence, there is the symbol of the cross, which symbolizes Jesus and a full circle pictured inside Him, which also symbolized the youth in previous editions of the WYD.

Another meeting place of the youth is the whole of Poland and especially Krakow Poland is the motherland of St. John Paul II - an Apostle of God’s Mercy and the initiator of the WYD. Poland is also the place of the birth and life of St. Faustina Kowalska to whom Jesus appeared personally on numerous occasions and to whom He passed the gift of Our Lady of Mercy. And Krakow, itself, as Saint John Paul II used to say, is the center of the cult of God’s Mercy in the world.

The theme of the XXXI World Youth Day is God’s Mercy. The red and blue flame is a reflection of the theme since it directly refers to the image of Merciful Jesus. St. Faustina writes in her Diary: “From beneath the garment, slightly drawn aside at the breast, were emanating two large rays, one red and the other pale.” Similarly, the elements in the logotype will represent the grace, which cleanses and inflames the young gathered for the World Youth Day.

The colours of the logo for Krakow 2016, red, blue, yellow, refer to the official colours of the city of Krakow and its coat of arms.

WYD PATRON SAINTS

Saint Faustina and Saint John Paul II are the patron saints of the World Youth Day in Krakow.

When in the summer of 1938, 18-year-old Karol Wojtyła arrived in Krakow to begin his studies at the Jagiellonian University, sister Faustyna was 33 years old and lived her convent life. She died on October the 5th, just when Karol was beginning the first semester of his studies on the Faculty of Polish Studies. They have never met each other but the Divine Providence has bound their lives in a special way: it was John Paul II who canonized sister Faustina and established the Feast of Divine Mercy, celebrated in the whole Church.

These two saints from Krakow - apostles of Divine Mercy – are the patrons of WYD in 2016.

For us, their lives are an example of deep trust in Divine Mercy, as shown in the words:

“Jesus, I trust in You”.13

Krakow and Lesser Poland are the homeland of Karol Wojtyła - Pope John Paul II. From here he set off for Rome, to take part in the conclave; and to this place he returned most willingly, in his memories and during the pilgrimages to the Fatherland: "Here, in this land, I was born. Here, in Krakow, I spent the greater part of my life... Here, I received the grace of my priestly vocation... I was consecrated Bishop in the Cathedral of Wawel," he recalled.

Helena Kowalska – an ordinary girl with a typical Polish surname. However, can we say about another person that he or she is “ordinary”? Or perhaps it’s just us who classify other people in this way? Helena didn’t want to prove anything to anyone, at all. And yet, she showed to the world how great is the potential hidden in “ordinary” people. It depends on them whether they will use it or not.

WYD PROGRAM

The WYD program includes meetings of young people with the Holy Father (called Main Events) and the accompanying events of a religious and cultural nature, such as: liturgies, catechesis, meetings with known communities and religious movements which operate worldwide, concerts and theatre plays.

The World Youth Day in Krakow will be officially inaugurated with the Opening Mass celebrated by the local Bishop, Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz.

Another important moment is the first meeting with the Holy Father- The Papal Welcome. The ceremony is of international character.

The Main Events are the most important events of the World Youth Day, during which all young pilgrims experience together a great celebration of faith. In Krakow, in 2016, they will be held as follows:

On Friday we will celebrate the Way of the Cross which emphasizes the penitential character of WYD.

The most personal moment is the Vigil with the Holy Father. It is a uniquely intense time of prayer and a meeting with Christ, a time full of concentration and joy.

The 31st of July is the time of the last one of the Main Events, that is, the Final Mass, celebrated by the Holy Father. It is a solemn conclusion of WYD, the culmination of all the previous meetings. During this Mass, the Pope “sends young people to the whole world”. At the very end, during the Angelus, Pope Francis – as usually – will announce the time and place of the next World Youth Day.

At the end of each World Youth Day, just before leaving the host country, the Holy Father meets those without whom the organization of WYD would not be possible. On Sunday afternoon, Pope Francis will give thanks to thousands of volunteers from the whole world for their ministry full of commitment and devotion. His close presence will compensate them their efforts of the previous days.

A religious, artistic and cultural program takes place in the afternoons and evenings during the three days of catechesis, except during the Main Events. The Youth Festival is composed of open and free initiatives of an artistic, religious and spiritual character. This aspect of WYD gives pilgrims an opportunity to participate in concerts, exhibitions, workshops, sporting events, theatre events and many others. The Youth Festival is prepared for pilgrims, by pilgrims. Everyone has the opportunity to participate not only as a spectator but also as an artist or organizer.

Various communities, congregations and religious movements take care of the spiritual aspect of the Youth Festival during World Youth Day. In 2016, churches in Krakow and precincts, squares and gardens, courts, sports halls, stadiums and cultural institutions will become venues for prayer and evangelizing meetings for groups from Poland and around the world.

Catechesis is preached in different languages by bishops from around the world who introduce pilgrims to a teaching on the beatitude, “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy” (Mt 5:7), the theme chosen by the Holy Father for the XXXI World Youth Day in Krakow. Catechesis sessions will take place across the city in churches and other chosen venues to ensure that all young people can participate.

During the catechesis, priests prepare young people to understand the meaning of the sacrament of reconciliation, in which they can partake each morning. All catechesis sessions include Eucharistic celebrations.

The Vocations Center is a place where religious congregations, Catholic schools and universities, religious publishing houses, missionary organizations, national and international movements and communities can present their work.

The Vocations Center’s goal is to show young pilgrims different paths of achieving their vocation in the Church and to encourage them to look for answers to the question of what God expects from them in their lives. The Vocational Center also gives pilgrims the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the spiritual richness of the Church.

Krakow attracts with its unique atmosphere, the biggest monument complex in Poland, including over 6,000 pieces of architecture (which is unprecedented on a global scale), and with numerous and diverse cultural events.

Currently, the city has 760,000 inhabitants, and about 210,000 students attend its 23 schools of higher education. Krakow’s geographic location in the center of Europe has made it an important spot at the trade routes already in the Medieval Times, and the Main Square has become the largest market square in Europe - it occupies 4 hectares!

It’s also worth mentioning that Krakow is one of 14 places in Poland listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Because of a large number of churches, sanctuaries and tombs of saints and beatified persons, our city is called “the second Rome”.

The Old Town in Krakow was classified as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978, as one of the first 12 sites in the world!

The listed area includes the Old Town within its old walls, the architectural complex of Wawel and the Kazimierz and Stradom districts.

Współcześnie Kościół krakowski to tętniąca życiem wspólnota, groma-dząca w 490 parafiach około 1,8 miliona wiernych. Wiele ruchów, wspól-not świeckich i zakonnych tworzy barwną mozaikę form pobożności i obszarów zaangażowania w życie Kościoła.

Uczelnie katolickie, zakonne i diecezjalne seminaria duchowne, działa-jące w Krakowie od przeszło 400 lat, pomagają rozeznawać młodym ludziom powołanie oraz przygotowują do świadomej dorosłości.

Cechą charakterystyczną krakowskiego środowiska wiary są liczne dusz-pasterstwa akademickie, które podejmują różne inicjatywy modlitewne, katechetyczne, społeczne i charytatywne.

Znakiem pobożności wiernych z archidiecezji, który wykracza także poza jej granice, są tradycyjne pielgrzymki do sanktuariów, a szczególnie ta podejmowana co roku przez kilka tysięcy pątników – diecezjalna piel-grzymka na Jasną Górę.

THE SANCTUARY OF DIVINE MERCY IN ŁAGIEWNIKI (ul. siostry Faustyny 3)Religious complex connected with the life and works of St. Sister Faustina Kowalska. Since the 40s, a site of pilgrimages related to the painting of Merciful Jesus and the tomb of St. Faustina.

SANCTUARY OF ST. JOHN PAUL II(ul. Totus Tuus 32) In the sanctuary we will find relics of St. John Paul II, the tombstone from St. Peter’s Basilica and the blood-stained cassock, worn by the pope during the assassination attempt in 1981.

KRAKOW MOUNDSThere are 5 mounds in Krakow. The oldest ones are Krakus Mound and Wanda Mound, the most popular one is Kościuszko Mound, the biggest one - Józef Piłsudski Mound, the most recent and the smallest one – John Paul II Mound. Particularly beautiful views can be admired from Kościuszko Mound! (St. Bronisława Hill).

KOŚCIÓŁ W ARCHIDIECEZJI KRAKOWSKIEJ

Archidiecezja krakowska należy do najstarszych na terenie Polski, jej historia sięga 1000 r., a powstanie wiążę się ze zjazdem gnieźnieńskim i z uznaniem polskiej państwowości w ówczesnej Europie. W ciągu wie-ków archidiecezja odgrywała bardzo ważną rolę w formowaniu narodo-wej tożsamości, szczególnie w czasie, gdy Kraków był stolicą.

Głównymi patronami archidiecezji krakowskiej są św. Stanisław ze Szczepanowa (biskup i męczennik, zamordowany z rozkazu polskiego króla) i św. Jan z Kęt (średniowieczny profesor najstarszego polskiego uniwersytetu – Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego).

Przez wieki archidiecezja wydała wielu świętych i błogosławionych, jej biskupi często uważani byli za postacie wybitne, zarówno w kraju, jak i za granicą. Archidiecezja krakowska jest głównym miejscem kultu Bo-żego Miłosierdzia, a także jego gorliwego czciciela – św. Jana Pawła II, który do 1978 r. był biskupem tego miejsca. Najsłynniejszymi sanktuaria-mi i miejscami pielgrzymek na terenie archidiecezji są Kalwaria Zebrzy-dowska, Ludźmierz i Mogiła.

OSKAR SCHINDLER’S ENAMEL FACTORY (ul. Lipowa 4)Oskar Schindler employed Jews in the factory threatened with extermination who were later put on the so-called Schindler’s list and saved from death. Currently, we can visit here a museum which documents the period of the German occupation of Krakow in the years 1939-1945.

WAWEL CASTELThere are two architectural complexes on the Wawel hill: the Royal Castle and the Wawel Cathedral (the Basilica of St. Stanisław and St. Wacław).


POD JASZCZURAMI CLUB (ul. Rynek Główny 8)The oldest student club in Krakow. Through years, it has become nearly a legend of student cultural life. Many important events, social and cultural, take place there: meetings with known people, cabaret shows, concerts, dance parties, “Erasmus Student” meetings, theological events.

CHURCH OF ST. ALBERT One of the smallest and the oldest churches in Krakow. Its origins date back to the 9th century. This example of the Romanesque style is situated at the heart of Cracow, on the Main Square.

PLANTYIt’s a unique park, a green belt encircling the Old Town. Created at the place of city walls, during the years 1822–1830. Come and take a rest on a bench under the trees!

ST. MARY’S BASILICA(plac Mariacki 5)One of the biggest and the most important churches in Cracow, after the Wawel Cathedral. Built in the 14th- 15th century. Famous for its wooden altarpiece, carved in the years 1477 - 1489 by the German sculptor Wit Stwosz.

KAZIMIERZ(Jewish district)One of the most interesting parts of Krakow. Today, it is situated near the city center; earlier, it was a separate town.

COLLEGIUM MAIUSSituated where Św. Anny and Jagiellońska streets meet- it’s the oldest university building in Poland.

WIELICZKA SALT MINE(ul. Daniłowicza 10)Put on the first UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites, in 1978. The underground route was created at the turn of the 18th and 19th century. Nearly 1 million of tourists per year go through the 3- km-long route, consisting of 20 chambers, situated at the depth of 64 - 135 meters.

THE SANCTUARY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD AND THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY IN KALWARIA ZEBRZYDOWSKAThe sanctuary in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska is one of the largest and most-visited pilgrimage sites in Poland. The sanctuary in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska is currently made up of a Baroque church with the miraculous image of Our Lady of Calvary, a monastery, and a group of churches and chapels that make up a pilgrimage route, or paths: for the contemplation of the Passion of the Lord and of the mysteries of the life of the Mother of God. From an early age, Karol Wojtyła himself visited Kalwaria. He peregrinated there as bishop of Kraków and cardinal, and twice as Pope: during his pilgrimages to Poland in 1979 and 2002.

There are a lot of pharmacies in Krakow. In the city center, you can find one around almost every corner and in every shopping mall. You can pay either in złoty (Polish currency) or by card. In the majority of pharmacies you can speak English (and be understood).

Most medicines against pain, fever or first symptoms of cold or flu, can be bought in every supermarket or large grocery store.

For the WYD participants, there will be first aid points especially at the places of main events, where they will be able to get some help when needed.

Please remember! If you know that you need any medicines, get them before coming to Krakow!

In the majority of the banks, it is possible to speak English.

Remember, even when a bank in Poland has the same name as your bank (ING, Santander, Deutsche Bank, etc.), it is still a separate entity in relation to your bank, so it may impose additional costs on your financial transactions, just like in the case of another bank’s customers.

There are Euronet and Cash4you ATMs all over the city. You will be able to use them without additional costs, though it depends on your bank. Before you arrive in Poland, please consult a table of fees or ask in your bank for information regarding bank services abroad.

In most shops (groceries and souvenir shops as well ) in the city center you can pay by card. Visa, MasterCard and Maestro cards are widely accepted. There’s usually a sign on the shop’s door, showing that you can pay by card.

Even though Poland is EU member, its currency is Polski Złoty (PLN).

Still, in some shops you can pay in euro (but the change is given in PLN).

In the center, there are a lot of currency exchange offices where you can exchange most currencies, such as: euro, American dollar, British pound, Swiss franc, Czech koruna and Hungarian forint. Often you can also find exchanges for Australian and Canadian dollars. It’s much cheaper to get foreign currencies in an office than in a bank. The exchange rate of Polish złoty depends on the situation on the financial market.

Which documents do you need to visit Poland? Third-country nationals who arrive in the European Union (including the Republic of Poland), must be in possession of required travel documents (passports) which entitle their holders to cross the external borders.

The passports must: 1. Be valid for at least three months beyond the length of stay in the EU member countries; 2. Be issued within the past 10 years.

If you are required to be in possession of a visa, you will need a Schengen visa or other permit needed to cross the border (e.g. a national visa, a residence permit issued by another EU member country, a residence permit for family members of EU citizens, etc.).

You must also meet the following requirements:• Justify the purpose and conditions of the intended stay;• Have sufficient means of subsistence or ensure their provision, both for the period of the intended stay and for the return to your country of origin;• You must not be featured in the

Schengen Information System (SIS) as a person to be refused entry;• You must not be a threat to public policy, internal security, public health or international relations of any of the EU member countries and you must not be featured in national databases of the EU member countries as an undesirable person.

While planning a journey to the EU/ the Republic of Poland, in order to avoid being refused entry, and –in consequence- deception, additional costs and inconveniences, you must make sure that you possess the required travel document, check if you are subject to the visa requirement when entering the EU/ the Republic of Poland and, if applicable, take the necessary steps to obtain a visa at the consulate of Poland or another EU member, and fulfil any other requirements to enter and stay in an EU member country / the Republic of Poland. Citizens of the European Union, the European Economic Area or other countries which are not EU members, yet which, under agreements made with the EU, enjoy the right of free movement, under the EU law may enter the territory of the Republic of Poland when they are in possession of a valid document certifying their identity and citizenship.

PLEASE NOTE! driver’s license, student or school ID card, insurance, certificate of application for passport or national ID card, birth or marriage certificate or interim documents issued to third-country nationals under the refugee or asylum procedure, pending the final outcome of their status request, do not entitle their holders to cross the border and to stay in the Republic of Poland.

Nevertheless, it is advisable to carry such documents with you because in difficult situations (e.g. in case of loss, theft or damage of passport or national ID card), these documents may be helpful in certifying your identity and citizenship, and in obtaining a relevant document, required so that you can return to your country. In such situations, it may be also useful to have on your mobile phone photographs of the pages of your passport / national ID showing your personal data, as well as visas or residence permits.

What should I do if I lose my documents during my journey / stay in Poland? • You should go to the nearest Police station, report a loss of document and obtain a relevant certificate. Submitting such a report is particularly important in order to prevent illegal use of the lost document by unauthorized persons. Please note that the Border Guard does not issue any certificates of document loss. • In the embassy or consulate of your country you should apply for a relevant replacement travel document which will allow you to return to your country of origin or residence.

So, if you are only in possession of a certificate of loss of your passport, issued by the Police, you may be denied permission to board the plane.

What do the controls in the territory of Poland consist of? On the basis of the entitlements possessed, the Border Guard may, apart from performing regular border checks at border crossing points, check the legality of residency of foreigners in the territory of the Republic of Poland. During such controls, Border Guard officers have the right to check

not only the travel documents and to verify the legality of residency, but they can also control the vehicles, as well as the entitlement to possession and driving licenses. In the case of traffic or regulatory offences, or any infringement of the Polish legal order, the competences of the Border Guards and Police are the same and the officers have the right to sanction the infringements- including imposing fines.

During internal controls, Border Guard officers may perform their duties, similar to those performed on travelers during crossing the external borders. In the case of detecting that the foreigner does not have the relevant documents, entitling them to stay in the territory of the Republic of Poland, or that they do not fulfil the requirements necessary so that the stay can be considered legal, such a person may obtain an administrative decision ordering them to leave the territory of Poland.

In which cases may a third-country national be refused entry in Poland or in the EU? The possible reasons for taking an administrative decision refusing entry in the territory of Poland / EU may be the following: • Lack of a valid travel document; • Lack of a valid visa/ residence permit, if required; • Possession of a false/ counterfeit/ forged travel document, visa or residence permit;• Lack of relevant documentation

justifying the purpose and conditions of the intended stay;• Lack of sufficient means of subsistence for the duration and form of the intended stay, or lack of sufficient means to return to the country of origin; • Stay of over 90 days within a period of 180 days in the territory of EU member countries; • Presence of the personal data in the Schengen Information System for entry denial for an undesirable person;• Being a threat to public policy, internal security, public health or international relations of one or more EU member countries.

HOW TO GET A VISA

Since 21 December 2007 the Republic of Poland has been a part of the Schengen area. The rules of crossing external borders of the Schengen area are contained in Regulation No 2016/399 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 9 March 2016 establishing a Community Code on the rules governing the movement of persons across borders (Schengen Borders Code).

Annex I to Council Regulation No 539/2001 of 15 March 2001 listing the third countries whose nationals must be in possession of visas when crossing the external borders and those whose nationals are exempt from that requirement indicates countries whose nationals must have valid visas when crossing the external border of the Schengen area.

COMMUNICATION DURING WYDEffective communication is key to ensuring that WYD is held smoothly. As Volunteers, we have to be the best informed group of participants - this is why it is important that we know where we should look for the information we need.

The Guide which you are reading is one of the sources of knowledge about the organization of volunteer work; however, any information will be sent to you on an ongoing basis mainly by e-mail, at the address which you specified in the volunteer application.

We will write you about the type of voluntary service which will be assigned to you, we will give you information on how to perform that service and inform you about your accommodation. In the same e-mail we will also invite you to use the application and Volunteers’ portal.

PLEASE NOTE! The application for Volunteers is different from the one for pilgrims. You can install both applications – the first one will be used for communication with you, the other one contains valuable information which you can read before your arrival in Krakow. Important information can be also found on our website (www.krakow2016.com). Nevertheless, we would like to point out that communication via e-mail is the most important one. Please check your inbox on a regular basis.

National and international volunteers will be divided into groups of ca. 10 people; all of them will have a team leader. In total, during WYD there will be ca. 1,000 team leaders. Groups will work on one task, yet in a shift system.

Team leaders will be in contact with volunteer coordinators who will organize their work in a particular place or will assign them a particular service. There will be ca. 100 coordinators. Everything will be supervised by local staff formed by members of the Volunteer Department and other sections of WYD Organizing Committee.

Volunteers will communicate with team leaders by phone or directly; team leaders will use two-way radios to communicate with coordinators, just like coordinators with local staff.

MOBILE APPLICATION

Volunteers will have constant contact with their coordinators, team leaders and other people forming part of their group. The application will also have a Messenger function, enabling direct and instant communication.

The Mobile Application for Volunteers is going to be a tool for communication, working on Android and iOS, directly related to and working with the "Mountain of Good" internet portal for volunteers.

Logging into the application will be very simple - through a previously created account (Profile) on "Mountain of Good".

Thanks to the mobile application, every volunteer will have permanent access to resources like: news, urgent and essential information related to their work and WYD current events, emergency phone numbers, a guide, and also access to the full list of accommodation.

WHAT TO PACK

1. Prepare a list of things which you want to take – a few days before you set off;

2. Follow a particular order when packing your clothes and underwear - first T-shirts, then trousers, etc;

3. Remember - the lighter your suitcase is, the better.

1. In July, Poland can be hot but also rainy (the truth is that you never know what to expect) – do not forget about protection against the rain!

2. Layered clothing is recommended – wearing a few garments on top of each other will help you get accustomed to weather changes;

3. The average temperature range for July is about 20 - 30˚C; however, nights can be chilly, with temperatures reaching about 10˚C

4. Take comfortable clothes and shoes – which will cover you during rain, light and breathable when it is hot

It is important to collect not only our memories and experiences but also all the necessary things for our journey. When you pack your objects properly, you feel safe, so you have to bear in mind the most important things – make sure that you take your documents (passport, identity card, health insurance – for EU members it can be the EHIC card), money and medicines (if necessary).

VOLUNTEER TRAINING

1 GENERAL TRAINING:

The first part is the so called General Training related to the program of WYD, safety rules, first aid and communication.

The training will be divided into two parts:

2 SPECIFIC TRAINING:The second more extensive training will involve preparing the volunteer to perform the work assigned to them. The Specific Training will be led by the individual Departments.

For the most part, the training will be in the places of accommoda-tion. Maps with the places of accommodation and training will be prepared and sent.

On Wednesday, July 20 at 6:00pm there will be a Mass welcoming Volunteers in the Sanctuary of Divine Mercy in Łagiewniki celebrated by Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz.

Prepare yourself spiritually for World Youth Day. We advise you to go to confession before leaving.

Remember to bring important travel documents for WYD as well as copies of these documents in case you lose them.

Before leaving for Poland check where the nearest Embassy of your country is found.

Make note of important phone numbers (for ex. emergency, credit card and ICE (In Case of Emergency) – contact for someone in your family in case of incident).

Don’t forget to let your parents and other people close to you in your country know that you are in Krakow. Pray, give thanks for a peaceful journey and ask for the successful course of your volunteering service.

DURING VOLUNTEERING

You have arrived. You find yourself in a completely foreign culture in a far country.

Get to know the surroundings, find yourself in a new situation, in a foreign culture and new people. Remember you are not the only one who can feel uncomfortable. Try to go outside of your comfort zone.

Take part in the training for volunteers, which will prepare you for responsible service.

Don’t avoid your service and don’t leave the place of your work when you perform duties of being a volunteer. You belong to a group of WYD organizers, together with the volunteers of WYD you are a strong pillar of the organized event – make use of this opportunity!

Cooperate with people in your group, ask your team leader to give you news about the course of the work, in case of any doubts contact the people responsible for help and report to the Volunteering Center (we will give you the address in an email)

Be flexible – WYD is a project at a global scale, not everything always goes according to what we expect, that’s why you shouldn’t get discouraged in case problems come up, only try to adapt yourself to a changing reality.

Take care of yourself. Dress appropriately for the weather, and wear comfortable shoes. In case you use medication, don’t forget to take it.

Make a record of your activity as a volunteer – take pictures, record films, collect signatures on shirts and flags, write contact information for people you meet, share gifts that you’ve brought from your country.

The last hours of volunteering for WYD, packing your bags, saying goodbye and exchanging contacts with the people you met, the last photos, thinking about your return, an atmosphe-re of joy and at the same time sadness, lots of emotions and feelings. You have thought: what will you do after the end of your adventure at WYD?

“POST-WYD Syndrome”,or advice on how to improve your mood after WYD!

You have come back home. Sit down comfortably and thank God in prayer for the amazing gift and unrepeatable adventure that you’ve experienced.

Try to keep regular contact with the people you met during WYD. You have gone your own ways, but it’s not the end of the world. If God wishes – you will meet at the next WYD, and maybe even earlier.

Make note of the changes that took place in you after the end of volunteering – you have gained a unique experience and an amazing life lesson, you have looked at the world from a different perspective, you discovered common values that you and many other people around the world believe in.

Make use of the opportunity that you’ve received. Don’t lose motivation, be active, realize your passions, encourage yourself to discover your talents and deepen the faith of other people, develop your spiritual potential and form beautiful relationships with God and the people close to you.

Don’t be afraid of feelings that are in you. Give yourself a moment and accept the emotions that you feel. If you want to share them, talk with people close to you and find a community, some ministry, where you can talk about your experiences.

Take a card and a pen and write down all the skills and abilities that you have gained thanks to volunteering at WYD. Put this list above your desk and don’t tire in developing these qualifications.

May works of mercy become part of your everyday life - like ordered prayer, a ritual - like having a coffee and a joy - like going out with your friends.
