Collection 1: Ourselves and OthersThis collection explores how we interact with other people – family, enemies, neighbors, strangers, and those with whom we disagree.

Themes/Units Studied

Course Description

Aligned with PA Common Core & the Common Core Standards of Educational Excellence, this course will concentrate on strengthening students’ reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills as well as preparing them for state standardized tests & future assessments that extend beyond the high school environment.

Throughout the school year, our class will read a variety of literature including fiction, nonfiction, drama, & poetry. Different types of writing will occur, including multi-paragraph essays, project-based assessments, in class assessments, & small scale writing tasks, such as journal entries & constructed responses. In addition, students will work on their speaking skills with both individual & group presentations and other activities, such as reading aloud, reader’s theater, & listening to various selections read by professional actors. Larger works, such as To Kill a Mockingbird & Of Mice and Men, & the drama Macbeth will also be studied to enhance reading skills & practice critical thinking skills on an age-appropriate level.

The Common Core State & National Standards were used to dictate the current PA Core curriculum and the entire English department sincerely hopes that it offers the skills and knowledge needed to be successful in your future!
