Problem Solving
The professional engineer is expected to approach, analyze, and solve a range of technical problems intelligently and efficiently.
Engineers solve problems by applying their knowledge and experience following a process
This process is known as the Engineering Method or the Engineering Design Process.

The Engineering Design Process
ENGR 107 - Introduction to Engineering 9
The Engineering Method
1. Recognize and understand the problem.
2. Accumulate data and verify accuracy.
3. Select the appropriate theory or principle.
4. Make necessary assumptions.
5. Solve the problem.
6. Verify and check results.
ENGR 107 - Introduction to Engineering 10
The Engineering Method Verification is an essential part of the Engineering
Method. If the answer doesn't seem reasonable, there is
probably an error in the mathematics, the assumptions, or perhaps in the theory used. Judgment is critical.
Examination and evaluation of an answer's reasonableness are habits that the engineer should strive to acquire.

Design Project
Student Exercise:
Identify 3 other members of the class whom you will work with on the Design Project(s).
(This will be your 4-member group)
ENGR 107 - Introduction to Engineering 16
Student Exercise:
Brainstorm about the following questions.Come up with a list for each.
Be prepared to discuss with the rest of the class.
1. What do I need to know? (research)2. What do I need to do? (build)
3. What do I need to overcome? (constraints)
