Charlene Homan thinks everyone has a story to tell and she wants to help bring those stories to book form. After working in corporate communications, public relations and development for more than 15 years, Homan started her own business, Touchstone Storytelling, in December 2015. “It offers flexible hours and I also can write and help people,” said Homan, who has a bachelor’s degree in English and a minor in journalism and public relations. Touchstone Storytelling is designed to capture a person’s life story either from start to present or just parts, such as a love story, military history or family recipes. “It’s a nice way to bridge gaps; bring families together,” said Homan. The first book Homan produced was for a 94-year-old woman who wanted to document her ancestry to pass onto her family. “It was a total life story,” said Homan that chronicled the woman’s childhood, schooling, how she met her spouse, her favorite things growing up and messages for future generations. It included pictures of treasured items and stories telling why they were important. The longest book Homan has produced is 90 pages; most are about 50 pages. “It depends on how they define their story,” she said. “A love story might be 10 pages.” Homan begins by providing her clients with a list of hundreds of questions to consider. Interviews follow (typically about four hours), then a draft is produced for review. After revisions, a finalized copy is produced for review before design and production. She charges $40 an hour. Clients can get a 50-page hard copy book (for about $35), and also digital copies. Homan also offers partial services, including interviewing, writing, editing or design.
