HOLIDAYS AT THE MOA FEATUREARTICLE
CREATING NEW TRADITIONSEmbracing ‘the bold north’ mystique of Minnesota – as well as our love for all things outdoor – Mall of America is creating a new tradition this holiday season. SKATE THE STAR is a custom-built ice rink located at the North entrance of the Mall. Presented by UCare®, the 12,000 square-foot ice rink will open to the public beginning Saturday, December 8 and will remain open through January 27.
Built around the iconic star sculpture at the North entrance to the Mall, Skate the Star will be free and open to the public during select hours. Guests are welcome to use their own skates, or skate rentals will be available for $5 with 100 percent of skate rental proceeds benefitting the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Twin Cities. The unique skating venue, built by local company Minnesota Ice, will also be available for private and group functions.
New this year, Mall of America created a unique Holiday Cottage lounge and interactive experience. The Holiday Cottage, located on Level 3, North, offers unique selfie photo ops, an oversized fireplace, relaxing furniture and Ellie, an interactive, hologram elf. Ellie the Elf offers gift suggestions and fun interactions with guests like dance videos or selfies that you can send to your email for sharing with friends and family. The Mall’s social media concierge team members are also located in the Holiday Cottage to offer guests assistance and gift suggestions.
USING TECHNOLOGY TO ENHANCE THE EXPERIENCESeveral technologies have been put into place to enhance the guest experience and ease some of the anxiety that may sometimes surround the holiday shopping season.
Mall of America recently installed a new parking guidance system in the two massive parking ramps as well as the surface parking lots. Designed and installed by Park Assist, the new system is easy to use and understand. As guests approach the ramps, they will see large digital signage displaying the number of open spaces on each level. Once on the desired level a series of colored lights indicate if there are open spaces. To increase convenience, Mall guests can access parking information prior to leaving home from their computer or mobile device.
The Mall’s digital wayfinding directories, app, mobile website, Wi-Fi and social media platforms are all interconnected to offer seamless service to the millions of guests expected throughout the holiday shopping season.
Although the holiday shopping season is just underway, Mall team members are currently meeting to begin planning for the 2019 season to create an even better experience for MOA guests and build on the traditions that have been so well received.

RISINGSTAR
IF YOU HAVEN’T HEARD THE BUZZ ABOUT ANDREW ZIMMERN’S NEW RESTAURANT CREATION, LUCKY CRICKET, THEN YOU MIGHT BE LIVING UNDER A ROCK. No really, it’s all the buzz! Chef Zimmern has brought his brilliant culinary idea full circle and might I add, it is sure to be a huge
success. The menu is a complication of his favorites he has come to love during his travels throughout China as well as his fond childhood memories in New York. But don’t expect overly crazy items you might find on an episode of Bizarre Foods which one may only consume on a dare like maybe some “un-lucky” crickets. He plans on bringing authentic Chinese cuisine that all will enjoy, with dim sum dishes, shareable portions, noodles, rice, and specialty drinks; planting it all into a very cool and unique restaurant vibe. The hand painted Chinese dragon on the lounge/bar floor, the front door handle which replicates Andrew’s round framed eye glasses, and the Polynesian themed Tiki Bar, all designed by Shea Design, truly brought Zimmern’s vision full circle.
I had a chance to visit the Lucky Cricket during their first day of service (November 19th) and what a great experience it was. When you first walk in, the abundance of style and thoroughly thought out design is apparent. No stone was left unturned in the making of Lucky Cricket. The reto style bar stools at the Tiki bar, a small hut for guests to sit while they wait for their table, and the Tuk Tuk car were a few of my favorite touches. Our server Mohamad had a truly excited upbeat persona about him and helped us choose items off the menu. Let me tell you, the food did not disappoint! My favorite from our table was the Sheng Jian Bao. Already planning my next visit to try more off the menu.
Working directly across the West End certainly has had its perks and now there’s even more reason to meander over for a lunch break or happy hour for some of those specialty tiki cocktails! I highly suggest you take a trip to The Shops at West End in St. Louis Park and experience it for yourself, who knows, you just might spy Andrew Zimmern there.

JACKIE MILLERJOB TITLE: Architect AREA OF FOCUS: Retail/Restaurants YEAR JOINED MSCA: 2017
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB IN THIS INDUSTRY AND FOR HOW LONG?I worked for a 12-person architectural firm in south Minneapolis right out of school for 3 years.
WHAT KEEPS YOU IN THE BUSINESS? I love being a part of the creative process that helps shape the environment around us and brings a vision to life.
WHAT THINGS DO YOU NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THIS JOB, AND WHAT ARE THE DEAL KILLERS FOR YOU? The biggest thing you need is a “can-do” attitude and perseverance. Getting a project across the finish line is not always a straight forward path and you have to be willing to be flexible in the production without giving up on yours or your client’s vision. The biggest deal killers are inflexibility and reactionary responses. Projects on constantly moving, ever-evolving targets, and you must adapt with them and be proactive to the projects delivery needs.
WHAT IS THE MOST UNIQUE PROJECT/LEASE/PROPERTY THAT YOU EVER WORKED ON IN YOUR CAREER? I am currently working on a prototype design for a prepackaged frozen meat grocery store. The company is out Brazil and the only thing they sell at their stores is frozen meat that they prepackage and ship to the store location on dry ice.
WHAT IS ONE INTERESTING FACT THAT NOT MANY PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT YOU? I played two sports in college, basketball – point guard and softball-second base. My Sophomore year of college our basketball team made it to the sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament.
WHAT IS A UNIQUE SKILL THAT YOU HAVE? In high school, I was the school mascot and I was in marching band (cool I know). I learned to march and play an instrument in a mustang mascot outfit.
HOW DO YOU LIKE YOUR EGGS? Scrambled with a little mustard on top.
DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN THREE WORDS: Optimistic, Driven, and Passionate
WHEN YOU RETIRE, YOU WANT TO ...travel the world and start a travel blog! Thanks Jackie
MAXWELL MOHAGENJOB TITLE: Director of Real Estate DevelopmentAREA OF FOCUS: DevelopmentYEAR JOINED MSCA: 2018
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB IN THIS INDUSTRY AND FOR HOW LONG?I was a property accountant out of college. I remained an accountant for about two years before moving into finance. Coming out of college in 2012, the job market was slim for finance majors. Accounting was a great way to get into the industry.
WHAT KEEPS YOU IN THE BUSINESS? Constant learning. Real estate is continuously evolving; being one step ahead of the curve differentiates the winners and losers. Every professional I meet in this business has a different story and experience. The toughest part I have found is filtering between the good opinions and the bad ones!
WHAT THINGS DO YOU NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THIS JOB, AND WHAT ARE THE DEAL KILLERS FOR YOU? Commitment and resiliency. I can’t tell you how many times I have been told “no” in my career. Committing to a project and staying resilient through tough times will always be the difference in a successful project and a failure. Whether it is an idea for a new development, cost saving strategy or a team building activity, keeping a level head is the difference between a good reputation and sizzling out.
Poor property due diligence is a deal killer for me. Thorough due diligence not only impacts your time management but ultimately impacts the bottom line.
WHAT IS THE MOST UNIQUE PROJECT/LEASE/PROPERTY THAT YOU EVER WORKED ON IN YOUR CAREER? This past year I worked on a vertical temperature-controlled self-storage development on a piece of real estate that had been labeled an outcast for twenty years. It was a skinny parcel next to the freeway that the owner and city could not find a use for. Tracking down the owner, agreeing on a price, subdividing the property, and completing entitlements all came with their unique struggles. Managing the ups and downs emotionally has really been a learning experience for me that I can carry with me the rest of my career.
WHAT HOBBY OUTSIDE OF WORK ARE YOU REALLY PASSIONATE ABOUT AND WHY? I am a huge hockey fan. I try to go to as many Minnesota Wild games each year as possible and I play in a men’s league every Tuesday night. It’s a great workout and always leads to some great conversations in the locker room after (and a few beers).
