by Elizabeth Held When I decided to write this, I figured I’d write about everything that’s changed since we started kindergarten. We started kindergarten, in the midst of the major league baseball strike, the year the World Series was cancelled, and a few short months after O.J Simpson’s infa-mous low speed chase. It was the Revolution of 1994, the year the Republicans took back the house and the senate. In third grade, scientists suc-cessfully cloned a sheep (remem-ber Dolly?) and in fifth grade, George W. Bush was elected to his first term as president. Things changed for us at the be-ginning of sixth grade. We watched in homeroom as two planes flew into the World Trade Center. Sud-denly, we started to grow up. We watched as the decision to invade Iraq was made, and carried out. Our freshmen year, the presi-dent was reelected. Our junior year, Nancy Pelosi was named the first female Speaker of the House. And now we’re here. Standing on the brink of, well who knows what? I wanted to point out all that’s happened. But what’s more important is what’s coming. We decided to use a quote from Utah Senator Orrin Hatch, “There is good reason they call these cer-emonies ‘commencement excer-sises.’ Graduation is not the end; it is the beginning,” atop the list of everyone’s plans for next year. He’s right. We’re ending our ca-reers here, but we’re off to new places. That’s what the senior supplement is all about: begin-nings. “Every new beginning is some other beginning’s end.” That’s an-other quote we could have used. As any child of the nineties should be able to tell you, it come from Semisonic’s “Closing Time.” We

Standing on the brink of beginningsface these new beginnings with excitement, nervousness and a little bit of sadness. But it’s im-portant to remember of four years here, have prepared us. We’re ready to go on. We’ve learned how to make things happen-- how to set goals and achieve them. We learned the difference between who and whom. We’ve learned in the class room and on the athletic field, never to give up. We learned sine and cosine and tangent. We learned how to make friends and hold on to them. We learned how

to use commas. We learned to lis-ten. We learned the periodic table of elements. We learned to share our toys and play nicely with oth-er children. We’ll carry these skills with us, each and every day, and they’ll take us far. We’re destined to do great things. In the four years we’ve been here we’ve helped to support breast cancer research and eating dis-order awareness. We’ve read to small children in need of instruc-tion. We’ve brought in thousands of cans of yams. Our desire to help people in need will be a de-fining purpose in our lives. Our class has members who plan on joining the Peace Corps, teaching,

and entering the medical field. We will impact the lives of others. So here’s to us. ‘08, we did it. We survived the nights writing pa-pers until 4 A.M. We laughed and we smiled. We beat back A.Ps and Regents. We had great times with our friend that we’ll never forget. Here’s to us and our new begin-nings. Before I finish, there are a couple of people who need to be thanked for helping to pull this off. Chris Nelson helped to put together the list and created the cover. Casey Mullaney, Vanessa

Lobo and Joanne Qiao each ran to a new homeroom each day to ask about future plans. Tess Le-one also helped to put the list to-gether. Karoline Hart helped to assemble the map. Holly Dykstra, made phone calls to the last few students we had trouble finding. Without them, you wouldn’t be reading this. And lastly, I need to thank James Edgar and Russel McDow-ell for their time, patience and dedication. I appreciate every-thing you’ve given to The Warrior this year. Congrats and Good Luck Ev-eryone!
