Noah’s Ark RistoranteOwner Jim LaconaAddress 2400 Ingersoll Ave.Phone (515) 288 2250Website www.noahsdesmoines.comHow many years have you been in business? Noah’s was opened 66 years ago in 1946, and I took it over from my father in 2010.What makes your business unique from the chains that carry similar menu items? Noah introduced pizza to the Des Moines area 66-some years ago when he handed out samples to customers who had not seen pizza before. We have a full scratch bakery to bake bread and rolls every day, and our sauces are faithfully prepared from Noah’s original recipes. Why is shopping local important? I prefer to buy or dine local such as the Urban Grill or with one of my cousins, because it keeps the money local where it belongs.

Smokey Row Coffee Owner Monte BennettAddress 1910 Cottage GrovePhone (515) 244-2611Website www.smokeyrow.com

How many years have you been in business? Smokey Row has been in operation since 1998, with the most recent addition to the family being the location on Cottage Grove, off of MLK, in October, 2009.What cuisine do you offer? We serve coffee and espresso drinks as one of our main attractions. These are complemented with a line of tea and other cold drinks, such as soda, juice, bottled cola and tea. We also have a good selection of hard-packed ice cream that we will use to make shakes and malts. We have a menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner. This includes hot and cold sandwiches, salads and soups. What makes your business unique from the chains that carry similar menu items? We aren’t hard-focused on cutting corners to move more people through or searching for the cheapest solution on every product. We start ourselves higher by having higher quality products than some places use. We also have a process of actually preparing drinks instead of having them come out of a machine already finished. We roast all of our own coffee to ensure that we have a solid base to make our coffee drinks with. Why is shopping local important? Smokey Row has always functioned as a meeting place and common ground for any group in the community, from two people, to 20 to hundreds when someone political stops in. Shopping local keeps the community mind active in a world that continues to push things farther away and make them more impersonal. Our view is to continue to help communities grow by being a place for people to gather.

Iowa Sound LCOwner Jason SmithPhone (515) 991-8141Website www.Iowasound.com

How many years have you been in business? I began the business in 1991.How did you get into your business? Throughout high school I was in a band and liked to DJ. I began purchasing sound and lighting equipment for school dances and other band shows. By late 1991 I was DJ-ing weddings and school dances nearly every weekend. After graduating high school I began growing the business to fill a void in our industry. Over the past 15 years, I have grown the business by offering the right services at the right prices for clients. What services do you offer? Iowa Sound offers a wide range of services in the event industry. From day-to-day rentals, to corporate meetings, to complete event production, we can cater our services to meet clients’ needs. What makes your business unique from the chains that carry similar services? We view our client business as a partnership, and we strive to provide professional and personalized services in an effort to make their events as successful as possible. Iowa Sound’s commitment to provide an exceptional customer experience is what keeps clients coming back for all their event needs. Why is shopping local important? Local businesses are vital to keeping any community thriving. The majority of jobs within a community come from small business owners. Like most local business owners I want the best for my family, so I work hard to provide clients with the best products at the best prices. I am also more likely to give my business to local establishments who do the same. As a local business owner living among my clients, I invest time and money into OUR community. Without local shops there would not be any profits returning into our communities.

Toad Valley Golf CourseOwners Tom and Fred (Lois) BradyAddress 237 N.E. 80th St., Pleasant HillPhone (515) 967-9575Website www.toadvalley.com

How many years have you been in business? 40 yearsWhat products/services/cuisine do you offer? We host many golf outings, weddings, anniversary parties and graduation open houses. Our facility has a conference center, driving range, 18-hole golf course and 18-hole miniature golf course. Our minigolf hosts lots of birthday parties and fun family outings. What makes your business unique from the chains that carry similar products/services/menu items? The biggest difference is the atmosphere we create. If you want to talk to the owner, you can easily find him. People will talk about how we treat our customers like we have known them for years. There is simply a charm about a family business that is completely unique. The greatest compliment that we received was from a photographer who was out to take pictures of a wedding ceremony we had. She paused as she was leaving and told us that she really enjoyed her time that she had spent here. We (our staff) were all so helpful and made her feel at home. She went on to say, “It just feels almost like you’re a family business.” We turned to each other and laughed. There is a reason that it feels that way. So much of corporate America has lost that feeling of a family-owned business that it is truly becoming something unique that you can treasure. Why is shopping local important? All the money stays right here in our local economy. The money you bring to us gets distributed to our 75-plus employees and local vendors. We spend it at the local dentist or chiropractor. I run into these people in my area at football games. Our community is in this together. We always enjoy learning about a business, how it got its roots and what we can do to help it grow.

It has been 17 years since we opened our doors in November 1995.What products/services/cuisine do you offer? We have a gallery featuring our own jewelry design work and that of other local and national artists, and we offer one-of-a-kind, small production and some well-made mass-produced jewelry items. We offer custom design and repair and have a well-equipped studio in the same location. Why is shopping local important? Knowing that the money used for purchases and foods will stay in the community and multiply many times over is one reason shopping local is important, but we are also actively supporting our friends and neighbors.

All three artists at Bigfoot Tattoo have a little metal and punk rock in us, and that gives our work a unique approach. We do everthing from detailed portraits of lost loved ones to abstract Care Bears... and everything in between and on either side. Why is shopping local important? Spend your money locally, and it will help our city develop as an attraction to people looking for a good, wholesome city for their family with art and entertainment to offer. Kris’ Hot Yoga Owner Kris Larrison Address 724 S.E. Alices Road, WaukeePhone (515) 778-5499Website www.KrisHotYoga.com

How many years have you been in business? Five years How did you get into your business? Being in the industry for so many years and having been a runner in college, I was naturally drawn to yoga and particularly Hot Yoga. Twelve years ago I started taking classes and quickly started attending teacher trainings and workshops in Hot Yoga and Vinyasa. After I began teaching, I clearly saw a need to bring Hot Yoga to the Des Moines area. Kris’ Hot Yoga is the first studio in the metro area to bring Hot Yoga, and we are honored that we have introduced it to so many people. Additionally, we are opening a new studio this fall called Hot Barre. Again, we are excited to be the first studio in the area to offer barre classes and to have an additional studio dedicated to this style of workout. What makes your business unique from the chains that carry similar services? We have some of the most highly-trained and educated instructors in the industry. All of our classes are completely unique — you will not get classes like this at any other studio. I have personally taken my years of experience and education and created a class that is done nowhere else in the country — it is completely unique to Kris’ Hot Yoga. We do not imitate the classes or style of classes done by other chain yoga studios. Every time you come onto your mat our instructors will deliver an authentic and unique experience. You may laugh, you may cry, you may sing! And with the addition of our Hot Barre studio, we are offering another new experience for clients they cannot get at other chain studios. We are adding the heat to spice it up and kick up the metabolism even further. Why is shopping local important? These people had a dream just like I did. It’s important to support them and to support the community.

Zumi offers clothing, accessories, and gift items from developing countries in Africa, Asia and South America. More than 40 percent of our products are certified Fair Trade which means the crafts people making them are paid fairly, work in safe conditions and no child labor is used. What makes your business unique from the chains that carry similar products? Zumi has a unique mix of fashions for women 18 to 60 who want comfort and style with a funky edge. You will also find beautiful, hand-crafted items from around the world that make great additions to your home or gifts for friends and family.Price point: What is the most expensive and least expensive item you carry? The least expensive item is a small wood, hand-painted cat from Indonesia at $3. The most expensive is a tunic that is a patchwork of beautiful fabrics at $106.Why is shopping local important? Dollars spent in locally-owned businesses have three times the impact on the community as dollars spent at national chains. When shopping locally, you simultaneously create jobs, fund more city services through sales tax, invest in neighborhood improvement and promote community development.

We offer flower arranging classes with wine and appetizers. Our flowers are fresh; our arrangements are creative. We don’t have to sell you what we have. Other shops have to “sell” out of their cooler because they have to wait for the their weekly wholesaler delivery. We have same-day delivery for gifts and flowers. We have a full greenhouse with blooming plants and green plants for sell or to rent for conferences and events. Our employees have 85 years of combined experience! We are conviently located to downtown, hospitals and funeral homes. Why is shopping local important? A locally owned business is likely to produce income, jobs, tax receipts and charitable donations for a community over several generations. I can give back to the community and other small businesses what they give to me.

DM Meal Man Owner Brette TamidPhone 855-271-TOGO (8646)Website www.DMMealMan.com

How many years have you been in business? We have been in business for four years in our Arizona and San Diego markets, and we are very excited to bring this concept to the Des Moines area. What did you do before you started your business? I was in the financial field, specifically in the brokerage business. How did you get into your business? When I lived in New York, I was very spoiled since the majority of restaurants offered delivery. When I relocated to Arizona I noticed very few restaurants offered delivery and I decided to fill the void. After reading an article about Des Moines being one of the fastest growing cities, and it too did not have a service like this, I decided to expand my company here to once again fill a void while helping the local businesses grow their sales and offering expanded delivery options to the local residents, businesses and hotel guests. What products/services/cuisine do you offer? We offer a variety of cuisines from Des Moines’ finest and favorite restaurants. We deliver breakfast, lunch and dinner options and specialize in drop-off catering for corporate customers and pharmaceutical reps. Price point: What is the cost to use your service? The cost to use our service is a flat $4.99 delivery fee when the customer orders off of our website at www.dmmealman.com and a flat $5.99 delivery fee if they choose to phone in their order at our toll free number 855-271-togo (8646).Why is shopping local important? Shopping local is important because it continues to keep your local businesses, (many of which are owned and operated by your friends, family and neighbors) open. It maintains a sense of community, which I believe is important.

Pamala Gilmore SalonOwner Pamala GilmoreAddress 5008 E.P. True Parkway, West Des MoinesPhone (515) 225-7777Website www.pamalagilmoresalon.com

How many years have you been in business? We‘ve been at our current location for seven years. What did you do before you started your business? I‘ve been a stylist in the western suburbs of the Des Moines area for more than 20 years. How did you get into your business? I actually went to cosmetology school to be a make-up artist and fell in love with hair color. Right out of school I was introduced to Framesi Hair Color from Milan, and that set my path to be an educator for the company as well as a member of their cutting team. I believe all of my experience as an educator led me to be a salon owner. What products and services do you offer? We are a full service hair salon with an emphasis in hair color and color correction. We also do facial waxing and make-up. What makes your business unique from the chains that carry similar products and services? Our Italian-style consultation. We consider our clients’ wishes, cranial shape, hair texture, growth patterns and face shape. Price point: What is the most expensive and least expensive item you carry? We have travel size products for less than $10. We also retail a professional blow dryer made by Bio Ionics, and it is $198. Other than your store, what other local business is your favorite to shop/dine? I love going to Grounds For Celebration coffee shop, owned by George and Jan Davis. They roast their own beans. Why is shopping local important? I believe that if we support one another in our community we all grow.

Sahar’s Salon and Day SpaOwners Dr. Alshash and Sahar AlshashAddress 4100 Westown Parkway, West Des MoinesPhone (515) 225-7559Website www.sahars.comHow many years have you been in business? 13 years.

What products/services do you offer? We offer everything from hair services, nail services, waxing, facials, massages, body treatments, peels, microdermabrasion, Botox, colon therapy and much more, as well as high-end clothing and jewelry. What makes your business unique from the chains that carry similar products/service? Our business is different because there is really nothing else like it in the Des Moines Area. Sure there are other spas and salons, but some places don’t offer everything we have in just one location. Instead of focusing on strictly medical services in our spa, we also focus on pure relaxation and make sure our clients feel pampered from head to toe. And when they are finished with their services and feel rejuvenated, they can walk over into the clothing store and pick up something that they won’t find at any other stores in the area. We offer a place for private parties, as well. We get companies from all over the state hosting their employees at our store. Why is shopping local important? Shopping local is important in so many ways! It helps to keep character and prosperity in the community. I believe our business is something unique in the Des Moines area, which can bring diversity to the community. It also helps to keep the dollars in your local community. Spending your money at locally-owned businesses has a higher impact on your community than going out and spending money at national chains. It also brings job growth to the community. SHOP LOCAL!!

Hinge

Owner Kelsey MihalovichAddress 218 5th St., West Des MoinesPhone (515) 777-2770Website www.hingeon5th.com

How many years have you been in business? This is my first year in business. What did you do before you started your business? In 2011 I graduated from the University of Iowa with a business and entrepreneur degree. After graduation I worked with Menards as a hardware manager. How did you get into your business? I have always had a love for antiques and anything that has great patina and character. The one-of-a-kind pieces that come into my store each have their own unique story to tell. I wanted to create a store that would give these stories a chance to live and be appreciated. What products/services do you offer? American primitives, antiques, industrial home decor, salvaged/reclaimed one-of-a-kind items, apparel, jewelry, hats, scarves and more. What makes your business unique from the chains that carry similar products? At Hinge, our mission is to provide the customer with items that rekindle happy memories and allow them to discover new, innovative ways to repurpose and incorporate vintage and reclaimed items into today’s current styles. As soon as you step through the front door at Hinge, the ambiance greets you, and you know you are in for a shopping experience like no other. Our store allows you to fill your nostalgic desire and rediscover your roots by creating a personal statement that is as individual as you are. Why is shopping local important? Buying locally gives everyone in the community a chance to support local business. This in turn, gives local businesses a chance for growth, development and return investments in their community.
