Enlightened by His Light It seems that every time I’m in the dark, I walk very cautiously and am unsure of whether or not I’ll step on something that will inflict some sort of pain. I was a cheerleader during my junior and senior year of high school and one year at cheer camp, the girls in my room were up way past “lights out”. I had peeked out our room to make sure our coach wasn’t doing her rounds, but she was and she was coming closer to our room. Naturally, I freaked out and attempted to run back to my bed while simultaneously telling the girls “coach is coming!” It was pitch black in the room and since I couldn’t see anything, I ended up running straight into the table causing the table to flip right along with my body flying in the air. The table was flipped over and I had painfully landed on top of it. If we had not been being sneaky, running around in the dark, I would not have ended up with a massive bruise on my stomach and legs. The dark is a dangerous place to be and at some point, we could end up really hurt. The Bible illustrates how we ought not to walk in the dark as children of the light several times. Paul articulates this very clearly in Ephesians 5:8, “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of the light…” The picture Paul paints for us here is that we are no longer who we used to be before we were believers. We are now children of the light and therefore, we are called to walk differently. Peter reminds us of our identity in Christ in 1 Peter 2:9, “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light…” We now walk in His marvelous light and therefore we have no need to walk in darkness. The fact that I was in a dark room and attempting to flee is the very reason I ended up in pain. When we end up walking in darkness spiritually, we will find ourselves in a place of vulnerability for the enemy to hurt us. However, we are children of the light as Paul and Peter so gently reminds us in the word of God. We should no longer even desire to walk in darkness. As we walk in the light we become more enlightened to the things of the Lord and His will for our lives! May we be diligent to ask the Lord to shine His light into the dark areas of our lives that we may be able to walk more freely in His marvelous light! Christina Chavez
