Voyage Planning Voyage Planning (3)(3)

Use of ECDIS and Electronic Navigation Charrts (ENC) for

voyage planning

Page 2: EN_PEV 4_2015 - Voyage Planning (3) ECDIS

Methods of a Route Planning

• According to the degree of technological advancement of ECDIS we can separate the following methods of a route planning:

1. Traditional methods (planning on the basis of the traditional paper chart and additional nautical publications)

2. Methods based on ECDIS

Page 3: EN_PEV 4_2015 - Voyage Planning (3) ECDIS

Route Planning based on ECDIS manual method:

direct (manual positioning of the way points by use of a marker),

Indirect (positioning of the way points by use of a keyboard),

interactive route planning: This method depends on:

an automatic delimitation of own ship’s safety depth contour,

an automatic outline of ship domain in the display chart,

a manual positioning of the way points

Page 4: EN_PEV 4_2015 - Voyage Planning (3) ECDIS

Route planning

• It should be possible to carry out route planning including both straight and curved segments.

• It should be possible to adjust a planned route by, for example:– adding waypoints to a route,

– deleting waypoints from a route,

– changing the position of a waypoint,

– changing the order of the waypoints in the route.

Page 5: EN_PEV 4_2015 - Voyage Planning (3) ECDIS

Route planning

• It should be possible to plan an alternative route in addition to the selected route. The selected route should be clearly distinguishable from the other routes.

• An indication is required if the mariner plans a route across an own ship’s safety contour.

• An indication is required if the mariner plans a route across the boundary of a prohibited area or of a geographical area for which special condition exist.

• It should be possible for mariner to specify a limit of deviation from the planned route at which activation of an automatic off-track alarm should occur.

Route Planning functions

The route plan is created by entering waypoints –

graphically rather than alpha-numerically:

1. Graphical route planning (planning by using the

WP graphic editor),

2. The waypoint list (route plan table),

3. RL (Rhumb line) / GC (Great circle) selection

4. Alarm setting for ‘route check’,

5. Route check and route correction

Route planning information

• sailing direction, • tidal information,• meteorological

information,

Route planning calculations:

- great circle GC,

- rhumbline RL.

Route Planning from Sydney to Los Angeles: •Great Circle GC - 6490 NM (-273 NM = 18h/15 Knts)

•Rhumb Line RL – 6763 NM

Construction of a route:- input of way-points (directly on the ENC

or in table)

- adjustment of a planned route

- recalling the way-points list

- way-points selection

- different methods to obtain courses and distances of track

It should be possible to carry out route planning

including both straight and curved segments

(IMO Res.A.817(19) 1995).

- On the ENC will be marked the point where the safety parameters were briched:

• Error 1 intersection of the TSS lane• Error 2 intersection of 10 meters

safety depth contur• Error 3 route entering in the neutral

sone of the TSS• Error 4 new intersection of 10 meters

safety depth contur • Error 5 route over a depth less than

the 10 meters safety depth
