Tips to help you make the most of your membership at FSS.By Pamela Pruitt

1. The new group travel trips open at 9 a.m. the first Friday of each month, so if you wait until after you attend the travel meeting there is a chance the trip could be full. The new itinerary comes out a few days before so stop by any of our three locations to pick up a copy and that will help you decide if it is a trip that you might want to sign up for.

2. Try to sign up early for programs. If you wait until the day of or the day before the program may be full.

3. The Around Town trips have to leave ON TIME. The reason is that most of the time there is a scheduled tour with a designated time to eat so we cannot wait if you are late. Come early and have a complimentary cup of coffee while you wait to board the bus.

4. Make sure you fill out the program evaluation sheet at the end of the program and turn it into the front desk. We love to hear your thoughts, good or bad. It helps us with future programming. Let us know what program you would love to see at FSS.

5. If you are coming to a class or program and need to renew your membership or register for other great classes, please allow enough time so that you don’t miss part of the program. Remem-ber to bring your photo ID with your current address for verification for membership renewal.

6. The calendar insert in the middle of the newsletter does not contain all the classes/programs that we offer. Remember to look on every page for more programs that are offered. Some mem-bers display the calendar insert on the refrigerator for reference. 7. If you are a member of FSS we offer free notary services. Just give us your name or show your membership card and we will be happy to assist you. Ask for Amy Epperson in Fayetteville or Pa-mela Pruitt in Peachtree City.

8. Need a well-balanced delicious meal for lunch? Our Café of-fers great food at great prices. Stop by the front desk at any of our locations for the monthly menu. We also offer a continental breakfast Monday thru Friday 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.. Don’t forget our special hot breakfast served every Wednesday and Friday!

9. Being a member has its perks too. Make sure you remember to show your card to get a discount. Check out page 9 of our newslet-ter for a list of companies that give a discount to FSS members. Come back to this page periodically as the list continues to grow.

10. Getting involved and attending social events is a great way to meet new people. We can never have too many friends. We of-fer after hour events on a monthly basis for fellowship and great food. More information can be found in the monthly newsletters.

11. Volunteering is a great way to stay connected and share your talents throughout our center. There are so many great opportu-nities and areas for volunteering from Front Desk Receptionist, Meals on Wheels, Café Assistant, Fitness Center, STARS Program, Tool Team, Special Events, Decorating, Garden, and more. Volun-teers are eligible for a free membership after 75 hours of service per 12 months. For more information speak with Amy Epperson.

ABOUT US

Since 1978, Fayette Senior Services, Inc., (FSS) an independent, non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization, has been providing a wide array of life -en-riching services to Fayette County residents age 50 and better. Fayette County, Georgia, is home to one of the fastest growing senior populations in metro Atlanta – and the age 60+ population segment is projected to grow an astonishing 450% by 2040. This statistic alone makes our mission — to make a meaningful difference in the emotional, social, and physical well-being of older adults — all the more critical. By fostering independence, improving quality of life, and enhancing the community connection, the programs and services we provide are an essential part of our community.

Not-for-profit FSS enjoys a unique public/private partnership with Fay-ette County government. Through this agreement we provide a variety of supportive services such as Meals On Wheels, Transportation, In-home Personal Care/ Homemaker Services, Care Management, Information As-sistance, and more. We could not do that without our government partners; however, we believe it is our responsibility to complement the public sup-port to ensure we can continue serving Fayette’s seniors for generations to come. Therefore, we feel it’s important to note that less than half of our revenue comes from sources other than federal, state, and local govern-ments.

Fayette Senior Services is recognized as a model of sustainability and social entrepreneurship among peer organizations and nongovernment funders. Although we are proud of this recognition, we could not do all that we do without the support from charitable donors, Center members, volunteers, grantees, and the community that so generously supports our fundraising efforts.

The aging transition can be paved with a broad spectrum of challenges. However, it can also prove to be rich with opportunities. The key to “ag-ing well” is knowledge. When it comes to addressing those unique needs, Fayette Senior Services Life Enrichment Center is the one-stop shop for empowering older adults to live well and age well.

Our Life Enrichment Center in Fayetteville is uniquely different from tra-ditional senior centers. Our beautiful facility is a vibrant place where adults age 50+ come to socialize with friends, enjoy a great meal in our Ultimate café, re-energize their bodies, exercise their minds, and lift their spirits.

To make sure our programs and activities are within easy reach to more seniors, we are proud to have established a community partnership with the city of Peachtree City. We now offer many new programs and activities in Peachtree City at the Gathering Place (next to “The Fred” Amphitheater) and at our newest facility, McIntosh Place. We’re adding new classes and activities each month during our expansion to PTC, so stay tuned for more!

We are proud to be making life better in our community. The Fayette Senior Services Staff

When You Need a Little Help From Some Friends...We offer supportive services that make a meaningful difference in the emotional, social, and physical well- being of older adults by preserving their indepen-dence, improving their quality of life, and connecting them to the community.

Meals On WheelsMeals on Wheels is a needs-based program for

homebound, or semi-homebound, seniors who are unable to provide themselves with regular nutritious meals due to physical or financial challenges. The service also connects homebound seniors to the com-munity through daily social contact, which also helps to ensure their well-being.

Ani-Meals To many homebound seniors, having a pet is a

source of companionship and comfort. The AniMe-als™ program is designed to give our Meals On Wheels clients a little help with the cost of pet food to make sure that maintaining that important bond isn’t an added burden.

STAR Program (Seniors Together After Retirement)

Our STAR program (Seniors Together After Retire-ment) offers individuals 60 and older an opportunity to come together for socialization, recreational activities, health and wellness classes, and a nutritious meal in our Ultimate Cafe. Transportation to and from the Center may also be available to eligible participants.

Transportation For older adults who no longer drive, getting to es-

sential medical appointments, to the pharmacy, to church, or to the grocery store can be a challenge, putting their health and well-being at risk. We provide safe and affordable door-to-door transportation op-tions. Wheelchair assistance available.

Information & Assistance Our certified Information & Assistance Specialists

are the gateway to connecting older adults with the right community resources or providing information to address their specific needs.

In-Home Personal Care/Homemaker Services This service enables older adults to remain living

independently by providing compassionate care from trained personnel who perform simple homemaker and/or personal care tasks, such as light housekeep-ing or assistance with bathing. Delivered with the utmost personal respect and dignity, our services can also bring much needed respite to caregivers.

Care Management Our professional staff of social workers helps older

adults make informed decisions to enhance indepen-dent living and quality of life. Our Care Managers offer consultations, assessments, and follow-up to assist individuals and families in planning and care. We also provide invaluable support to caregivers.

Adult Day Care We contract with a trusted and licensed local pro-

vider of adult daycare services that offers a caring environment focused on the individual’s physical and emotional well-being, as well as social and recre-ational activities. Transportation is available.

Medical Equipment Lending We lend gently-used medical equipment to individu-

als, families, and caregivers. Equipment is loaned on a first-come first served basis.

Home Repair Services Our Tool Team helps older adults who are either

physically and/or financially unable to perform minor, routine home maintenance tasks and repairs. The Tool Team also specializes in disability additions, such as grab bars.

Eligibility requirements apply for some programs. Some services may be provided free of charge (tax deductible donations wel-come) or based on a sliding scale of income. Contact us at 770-461-0813 for more information.

volunteer spotlightGet to know front desk volunteer Carmen Stancu. By: Pamela Pruitt

Carmen was born in Transylvania, Ro-mania and shares many stories of her early school years under communist rule. She has well as and many of her classmates were left handed and the teachers (by orders of the dic-tator) were required to tie their left hands be-hind their backs to force everyone to write with their right hand. Everyone had to be the same, and the dictator was right-handed therefore according to him, that was the correct hand to write with. Her mother, a school teacher, had to travel to another community to work. Working close to home was out of the question since the people were unable to choose where they wanted to work. Teachers were not allowed to teach about nature or encourage self-expres-sion. The government had them teach about the dictator and what a great man he was. Carmen recalls her mother taking her and her brother to the store with her to buy food be-cause she would receive two loaves of bread instead of one. Everyone was given a card to shop and the government would have the cashiers make a check mark next to the item they were buying. You were only allowed to

purchase the item once per week. If you came back before the week was up, you were denied the food.

The people were suppressed and com-pletely controlled by the regime of the dicta-tor. Art was not allowed because the dictator didn’t want people expressing themselves freely through self-expression. Your views had to be that of the dictator. “I remember people were afraid to speak in the streets because they were constantly watched by the soldiers and if they thought you were speaking against the dictator they would shoot you where you stood. Many were arrested and there were times people would just disappear never to be seen again.”

The fall of the dictator brought many changes. People began to move where they wanted to live and new opportunities began to open up for Carmen and her family.

During her third year in college, Carmen heard about a program that allowed students to work for the summer in the United States. She applied for a visa and was approved. “It was an exciting and sad time, as I had to leave my family and travel to a country I had never been to.”

The owner of the bakery where she worked in Michigan knew a Romanian family that had a son Carmen’s age. She introduced them and in 2004 they were married in Michi-gan where she worked as Community Man-ager for seniors.

In 2010 her father passed away in Ro-mania and in 2012 her mother received her green card. Carmen and her husband, Ray, bought a house in Fayetteville in September of 2012. She loves painting and drawing and volunteering at The Enrichment Center. Car-men works as a Realtor at Coldwell Banker. She has two daughters, Emma and Scarlett.

Question: I’ve really been trying to lose weight and nothing’s working. So this past week I de-cided to only eat one meal per day. Will that work?

Answer: A big fat N-O! Starving yourself is never the answer. Weight loss is science and there is definitely a formula to be considered. The big-gest tip to remember is calories consumed should always be less than the daily calories burned when trying to lose weight. So choosing healthy, lower calorie food and snack options are a sure way to reach your goals. More impor-tantly, NEVER skip meals. You need that nutri-tion to fuel your body. Plus, when you finally do eat, you’re more likely to overeat because you’re so hungry.
