The following restrictions are sched-uled to start Jan. 6:

• Monday, Jan. 6 - Lane restrictions and flaggers between 6:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

• Tuesday, Jan. 7 - Full closure from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Lane restrictions and flaggers, if needed, between 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.

• Friday, Jan. 10 - Lane restrictions and flaggers between 6:30 a.m. and noon.

During the Tuesday and Thursday full closures, all eastbound vehicles will be redirected at State Route 177 in Su-perior, and westbound vehicles will be redirected at the west end of Miami. Traffic will not be allowed to queue at the closure locations.

Because of the potential for long de-

lays, motorists may want to plan trips before or after the full closures.

In addition to the Pinto Creek restric-tions, work is on-going for a paving and guardrail project between Supe-rior and Top-of-the-World. Motorists should anticipate lane restrictions with flaggers and pilot cars while crews re-place guardrail.

For more information, go to:azdot.gov/PintoCreekBridge

Drivers should proceed with caution, slow down and watch for construction personnel and equipment..STT

Hiking with a dog - what’s not to love?! Join us for this easy one-mile hike every first Saturday of the month from Octo-ber-March, where participants can meet a canine hiking buddy and adopt. Part-nering with Maricopa County Parks and Rec., volunteers bring dogs from Marico-pa County Animal Shelter’s East Valley Animal Care Center to Usery Park. This program features dogs that would make great active companions and provides hikers the chance to meet the dogs out-side of the shelter environment. All dogs come to the hikes with their adoption paperwork to allow for on-site adoptions. While MCACC always hopes for adop-tions, if a dog is not adopted, the hikes still provide a great opportunity for ani-

mals to get out of their kennels for some exercise and socialization. Please meet at Area 6 at 8:45am to begin hiking at 9am.

Closure Of Two Loop 101 Ramps At Seventh Ave. Starts Jan. 6Scheduled To Reopen In March As Part Of Freeway Widening ProjectBy Arizona Department of Transportation

Two of the Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) ramps at Seventh Avenue in Phoe-nix will close for approximately three months starting Monday, Jan. 6, to allow work to advance on the Arizona Department of Transportation’s free-way widening project in the north Val-ley.

The westbound Loop 101 off-ramp and eastbound on-ramp at Seventh Avenue will close at 5 a.m. Monday. The ramps are scheduled to reopen in March.

The westbound on-ramp and east-bound off-ramp at Seventh Street closed previously as part of the proj-ect. They also are scheduled to reopen in March.

The ramp closures allow crews to widen bridges and reconstruct ramps between Seventh Avenue and Seventh Street to accommodate additional lanes.

Drivers on westbound Loop 101 can exit at Seventh Street and enter west-bound Loop 101 at Seventh Avenue via the westbound frontage road (Beards-ley Road), while eastbound Loop 101

drivers can exit at Seventh Avenue and enter at Seventh Street via the east-bound frontage road.

ADOT started the $185 million proj-ect in February to add lanes and make other improvements along 13 miles of Loop 101 between Interstate 17 and Pima Road. The entire project is scheduled for completion in early 2021.

To learn more about these improve-ments, please visit:azdot.gov/Loop101Improvements.STT

2020 Safety: Keeping You And Your Family Haz-ard-Free Into New DecadeAvoiding Texting While Driving, Hand Washing And Even Knowing The Neigh-bors Can HelpBy Banner Health

Looking for ways to make 2020 a safe, healthy and stress-free year? Banner Health safety experts have seven simple ways to keep you, your family and your home safe for the upcoming year and well into the next decade.

“Avoiding texting while driving is one of my most important resolutions for everybody,’’ says Melissa Luxton, RN, injury-prevention coordinator for Ban-ner Health. Luxton, who is based at Banner - University Medical Center Phoenix, works with colleagues at Ban-ner Desert Medical Center and Banner Thunderbird Medical Center on trau-ma-prevention efforts.

Texting while driving is one of the most serious forms of distracted driving, she said.

“If you are travelling at a speed of 55 miles an hour and you are texting, you will take your eyes off the road for ap-proximately the length of a football

field,’’ Luxton said. “That’s a long way for something to happen.’’

Luxton gives these tips on how to stay safer in 2020:

• Texting while driving: In 2017, there were more than 3,100 people in the U.S. who died because of dis-tracted driving. At any given mo-ment in the United States, about 660,000 drivers are manipulating electronic devices while driving, ac-cording to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

• Handwashing: “Handwashing is a great resolution to keep us healthy and safe for the new year,’’ Luxton says. Not only does handwashing reduce your chance of getting a cold or the flu, it can also help minimize your risk of getting sick from e.coli

2020 Safety: Keeping You And Your Family Haz-ard-Free Into New DecadeContinued from page 11

and the norovirus, according to the Centers for Disease and Control.

• Keeping medications locked up: “With the opioid crisis, it is now more important than ever we prac-tice medication management,’’ she said. Securing medications and proper disposal of medications keeps you and your family safe.

• Smoke detectors: Check your de-tectors once a month and assign a specific date to replace batteries, like New Year’s Day, Halloween or a birthday, Luxton says.

• Air quality in the home: Replace air filters regularly.

• Escape plan: Families should have

an escape plan for their own homes. “Fire escape plans: our kids are real-ly good at doing them at school and we practice them at our jobs, but we don’t practice them at home,’’ says Luxton.

• Know your neighbors: Who are you going to call in case of a minor household mishap? Good neighbors can help out.
