Ondas, which translates as “waves” in both Spanish and Portuguese, also has a colloquial meaning of "cool," or “hip new trend.” Setting new trends with accessible programming, as well as promoting education are key elements to Ondas’ mission. Ondas’ goal is to not only present rarely heard gems of the past and inspire and introduce new works, but to use their programs as windows to the vast panorama of Latin American culture. Ondas is a chamber music collective - the number of performers (musicians, dancers, actors) expands or contracts to meet the repertoire's needs. Within a given program, the audience will hear an array of works performed by a variety of instrumental combinations. In late 2010 Ondas will further expand its performing forces to include multi-media collaborations, particularly with the Cerqua Rivera Dance Theater. Ondas’ initial core personnel: Julie Koidin (Chicago), flute; Wagner Campos (Costa Rica), clarinet; and Rick Ferguson (Alabama), piano are now joined by Victoria Moreira (Uruguay), violin and Elizandro Garcia- Montoya (Costa Rica), clarinet. Cellists Sophie Webber (England) and Matt Agnew (Chicago) also are frequent performers. Ondas works closely with a variety of composers including Elbio Barilari and Gustavo Leone who contribute annually to the group’s repertoire. Ondas is in constant review and research of new works. Every Ondas performance presents new works or arrangements that have been prepared especially for the ensemble. Testimonials

“I have heard the Ondas Ensemble twice now. In each concert they present a broad range of music styles and a variety of historical periods from Latin America. The ensemble performs with extraordinary precision and expression. Their concerts inform and tantalize, whetting the audience’s appetite for more Latin American music and art.”

Gene Collerd Chair, Department of Performing Arts University of Illinois at Chicago Email correspondence 10/7/2010

“The Ondas Ensemble’s unique blend of instrumentation, innovative display of repertoire, clarity of articulation and precision of ensemble sets them apart from the rest.”

Lori Ardovino Professor of Clarinet & Saxophone University of Montevallo Alabama Email correspondence 10/31/2007

“The Ondas Ensemble is a versatile, engaging and multi-faceted group of musicians who play complex music with ease, verve and intensity. Whether it is a dense multi-layered texture, a lyrical melody or angular rhythm, the Ondas Ensemble always projects musical ideas with clarity, conviction and style. Its members are consummate players who communicate to a wide audience as easily and effectively as they communicate with each other.”

Gustavo Leone Professor of Composition Loyola University Chicago Email correspondence 1/21/2008

“The music we heard during today’s visit from the Ondas Ensemble was both familiar and energetic! My students enjoyed learning about each of the instruments and hearing first hand how they sound together as duets or trios. It was all we could do to keep ourselves from ‘tango-ing’ out of the auditorium!”

Monica Blacconeri Music Specialist Oakton Elementary School, Evanston, IL Email correspondence 12/19/2007
