The Golden Calf of the Republican PartyThe False God of the Democratic Party
Just before today’s first reading from Exodus, the descendants of Israel, our own spiritual ancestors, having grown weary waiting for Moses’ return from Sinai, took their golden jewelry and fashioned anidol, a golden calf. They said “These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt”(Exod 32:4). It was an extraordinarily ungrateful, impatient and foolish thing to have done. How could thepeople of the LORD have turned their back on the One who had saved them from the terrible oppressionof their slavery in Egypt, worshipping the works of their own hands?
In this heavily laden political season, where we are obliged to consider our choices for the next president, Iinvite you to do a close inspection of your party identification. Both major parties, in fact all humanpolitical enterprises, like the golden calf, are works of human hands. It may seem too obvious to point outthat neither party is a god, nor are their party platforms Scripture … but from the level of party zealevident in some circles, we can ask ourselves how much difference really lies between party affiliation andcommitment to God?
Some questions for us to consider: 1. When was the last time you became deeply emotional over a political issue, compared to the
last time you were deeply emotional over your relationship with God?2. How long ago was it that you publicly stated your political beliefs in contrast to the last time
you publicly professed your Catholic faith?3. Do you sing as enthusiastically at Mass as you chant during the party conventions?4. Are you as attentive to your LORD’s word’s in the Scriptures as you are to the public statements
of your party’s presidential candidate?5. Do you acknowledge the intrinsic dignity of the people who disagree with your politics,
according to Jesus’ commandments, not only to love our neighbor (Matt 22:39), but our enemy(Matt 5:44)? At the end of political discussions, would those you’ve been disagreeing with know you loved and respected them?
6. Do the values of your faith shape your politics, or your politics overwhelm the content of your faith? The fundamental question really is what is your deeper commitment, to God or politics?
It would be as terrible as the golden calf debacle at the foot of Mt.Sinai that we should chase after false gods ourselves. Rather, let’s beinformed, engaged, deeply Catholic disciples first, dedicated to thewelfare of every member of society and the world, party memberssecond.
Siempre adelante!

Teach Kids How to Identify BullyingBullying is an unfortunate problem in schools across the country. Nomatter how nice your children are, they are going to run acrossbullies. Teach your kids the classic signs of bullying — teasing, pushing, shoving, violence or threats of any kind, and more. Whilebullying does not always escalate to physical touching or violence, your children should be able to identify anything they areuncomfortable with and know where to go to report issues.
