What is Grey Fleet

The term ‘Grey Fleet’ refers to business miles driven

by employees in their own vehicles, and claimed back

at a fixed mileage rate.

It is called ‘Grey’ because the vehicles that fall into

this category in many respects are a grey area of

responsibility, often overlooked and misunderstood.

The Impact of Grey Fleet

Reimbursement costs – Significant cost with few or

no checks

Duty of Care Legislation – Failure to comply with

Corporate Manslaughter Act

Environmental Impact – Government target to

reduce carbon emissions from road travel

Dramatically reduce current spending that today is attributed to mileage reimbursement

Minimise exposure to Duty of Care risks that currently exist with current ‘Grey Fleet’ arrangement.

Encourage staff to travel via public transport and utilise alternative technology

Reduce the carbon footprint while providing accurate CO2 emissions data.

To review and implement a Comprehensive travel policy that tackles and reduces grey fleet usage

Key Objectives

Next Steps

Analysis of current greyfleet travel, total spend,

average journey length etc.

Identify the areas of impact relating to Cost & CO2

and the distance at which vehicle hire becomes

desirable.

Implementation of Travel Policy based on most cost

and carbon effective solutions available. including

Daily Rental provision with Enterprise Rent-A-Car
