Q: My estate isn’t big enough to be taxable. Why do I need an estate plan?A: One of my favorite definitions of estate planning states that “a good estate plan gets your property to who you want, when you want, in the way you want while minimizing transfer costs.” Reducing or eliminating estate tax is only one reason to have an estate plan. Making certain that your cars are distributed in an orderly and organized fashion to your family, that there is adequate liquidity to provide for ongoing maintenance and upkeep and that those cars that should be sold are sold at fair prices and at the right time in the marketplace. A good estate plan will also

make certain that if you become disabled or incapacitated while you’re alive, that your collection will be maintained in a way that reflects your desires.

Q: I’ve heard that they may repeal the estate tax. How does that affect my planning?A: While no one can predict what the laws will be in the future, we do know what they are currently and planning should be conducted so that when the rules change, your plans can be change. The estate tax has been repealed several times in history and has always been brought back.

Q: What makes my collection different than my other property?A: Beside the fact that you are probably much more passionate about your cars than you are about your other property, there are several things to consider. First, when you sell one of your cars for more than you have invested in it, the tax you pay is higher than normal capital gains

rates. Cars are considered tangible personal property and are taxed at 28% (federal). Next, collectible cars are generally illiquid as an asset. Yes, they can be sold but they aren’t traded on an exchange like stocks and bonds. A liquidity crisis in an estate may cause someone to make poor decisions about the sale of various parts of the collection. And, of course, cars require storage, maintenance and often must be transported somewhere to be sold.

Q: What else can an estate plan help me with?A: One aspect of estate planning which is often overlooked is asset protection. The way your collection is owned or titled may expose your collection to unnecessary risks. Certainly your collection should be adequately insured but the collection could be exposed to your personal liability. A comprehensive estate plan should address this exposure.

FROM THE CONSIGNMENT DESK

December is our craziest time of the year. With holiday’s just around the corner and the biggest collector car event in the world shortly thereafter upon us here in the consignment department we’re running nonstop.  Despite the frenzy of ensuring all the i’s are dotted and t’s crossed this is the best time of year we are able to get a really overall picture for how this year’s auction is shaping up.  And let me tell you, Russo and Steele’s depth and diversity of automobiles lined up this year is amazing!  For example, offered this year is the forth 427 cobra used by Shelby for their early PR test vehicle, the one of a kind Bill Mitchell design pace car driven by Sir Stirling Moss and one of only two 1968 L88 roadsters. However, it is not just the consignment team that is clocking in long hours; our bidder liaisons are working around the clock registering enthusiasts from around the globe eager to participate in the 12th Annual Scottsdale Auction.  In fact, we are thrilled to report at this early stage our bidder applications are up dramatically from last year’s record number including a significant increase in our international bidders and phone bidding. It is not hard to believe that Scottsdale becomes the mecca for the collector car enthusiasts each January.  This time of the year we who live in the beautiful southwest have uncovered our toys from

a longer summer slumber and are attending the many shows, rallies, concourse and just casual cruise ins around the valley. The events not only give us a chance to have fun with our

cars but also to catch up with old friends and meet the many new hobbyist who are just getting their first taste of this wonderful and crazy thing we call being a “car guy.” So, if you are spending a little more extra time in Arizona this winter and want to join Russo and Steele at one of the many events we participate in check out our events calendar online.  For the rest of you, we look forward to seeing you in Scottsdale this January!

Happy Holidays from the Consignment Team!

One of the rarest Gen-1 Camaros in existence offered at Russo and SteeleThis truly unique and one of a kind 1967 Chevrolet Camaro, known as the “Cherokee,” was pulled off of the assembly line in Norwood, OH and sent to the esteemed GM Design Center as a styling exercise for GM Design Chief, Bill Mitchell. The “Cherokee” convertible began its transformation with subtle exterior modifications which transformed the automobile into a fashion icon. The 1967 Camaro “Cherokee” was featured as a “Camaro for the Street” in a 1967 issue of Hot Rod magazine. It was through these pages that a wide audience was able to see the Cherokee’s integrated ducktail spoiler into the rear end, and Corvette style split bumpers that were fitted to the front and back. Sheet metal modifications were finished in the car’s original Aztec Gold Metallic, which served as a base for a gorgeous Candy Apple Metalflake Red trimmed with Gold pinstripes. As stunning as the Cherokee already was, distinguishing it from counterparts was its most distinct characteristic and remains to be this day – a hand crafted fiberglass hood scoop, the upper element of which is formed from Plexiglas to reveal eight polished ram tubes that feed a set of four 48mm Weber downdraft carbs atop an aluminum Moon Can-Am intake.

The noteworthy Mark IV big block is an “unstamped” pre-production L78 unit rated at 375 horsepower, which is the official factory figure before the addition of the Weber/Moon induction

system. Soon after the Cherokee’s appearance in Hot Rod magazine, it underwent one final transformation. The original red interior was replaced with a custom black interior that still adorns the car today. The original custom console and a tilting Corvette steering wheel remain as well as serve as a nice compliment to the

The Third Annual Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals took place November 19th-20th at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, IL. The Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals is the world’s largest specialty event devoted to classic muscle cars and Corvettes.

This year’s event featured more than 500 of the world’s rarest and most desirable muscle cars and Corvettes. The interactive show and exhibit gave car collectors, enthusiasts and their families a chance to experience the ‘best of the best’ from around North America. Some of the highlights at this year’s show included: the only 1967 Shelby convertible ever built; a Class of 1971 40th Anniversary Display, which featured the “Top Dog” muscle cars of the 1971 model year; the Corvette Central Triple Diamond Showcase, which featured a historic line-up of the country’s finest restored and original Corvettes; and the Dodge

Diamante, which is considered to be the world’s most valuable “Hemi”. This lifestyle event is certainly one to include on your calendar for 2012. We hope to see you there! For more information about the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals, please visit www.mcacn.com

custom black interior. This ’67 Cherokee’s value is due to its absolute uniqueness, fine condition, originality, and that fact that it remains in

existence at all. Doomed to the scrap heap even before its completion, it was fate that saved the Cherokee during its Pace Car duties at the Road America Can-Am, with Sir Stirling Moss behind the wheel. Cherokee caught the eye of Mitchell’s friend, Augie Pabst, who expressed interest in the car and owned it for several years before trading it to Vilter Chevrolet –Buick in Oconomowoc, WI. The Cherokee then transferred hands to Dan Frank of the Custom Top Show until 1987, and was later sold to

Brooksfield’s Edward Maurer, where it drew the attention of the collector and current owner. As reported in Muscle Car Review magazine, “The Cherokee could be one of the rarest Gen-1 Camaros in existence. It’s truly one of a kind”.

ENTHUSIAST CORNEREnthusiasts Corner is new to Enthusiast News, but we hope it becomes a fast favorite. This column is a chance to share fellow enthusiasts stories behind their passion. This month we start with none other than McKeel Hagerty, CEO of Hagerty Insurance, the world’s largest provider of collector car insurance and the executive publisher of Hagerty Magazine. When asked how he got hooked on classic cars he

spoke about growing up and working on cars in the garage with his Dad. They worked on several vehicles ranging from a 1933 Ford pick-up to a 1956 Ford Thunderbird and numerous Porsches.  In fact, many of those vehicles he grew up working on are still part of his family.Reminiscing he spoke about his first classic car. It was “a 1967 Porsche 911s that my Dad and I restored together in the garage.  It was about 1980 and I purchased it for $500 (with cash saved from various lawn mowing jobs) from an ice racer who used to race this car.  We had to dig it out of a snow bank, the engine was seized, the body was horribly rusted, and the purchase price also included a parts car and a small wooden boat.  We spent three years fully restoring it and I drove it through High School.  I have owned it ever since

and had it re-restored about five years ago. Out of all the cars I currently own and ever will own, this would absolutely be the last one I would ever sell.  I am very proud of this car and never get tired driving it.”

Like every other classic car collector even McKeel Hagerty has that one car that he is in searching of, in fact, he said that “right now, I have my eyes on an Aston Martin DB4…as I have always had a James Bond fixation and think that the DB4 is a little purer than the DB5.”

Before the conversation end I asked if he had a favorite classic car event that he tried to participate in each year and he responded without hesitation “ As much as I enjoy all the major car shows and Concours events around the world I have the most fun participating in driving events and road rallies.  My two favorite driving events are the Mille Miglia and the Colorado Grand.  The Mille Miglia is a very intense and historical road rally in Italy that takes you through some of the greatest driving roads in the world but it is hardly relaxing.  The Colorado Grand is a 1,000 mile driving tour through the Rocky Mountains that is probably the most fun you can ever have driving an open sports car and is the ultimate car guy vacation.”
