Entrance Test Results and Open Mornings

Students across the Midlands have now received their entrance test results. If you know anyone from Year 6 who would like a refresh about what BVGS has to offer, please encourage them to join Year 4 and Year 5 parents at our Open Mornings next week from 09:00 until 10:30.

National Service of Thanksgiving, Oliver Gray-Nimmo

A warm congratulations to Oliver Gray-Nimmo (Y10) who has been invited to attend the National Service of Thanksgiving to commemorate the centenary of the Armistice in Westminster Abbey. This is as a result of Oliver's poem which was entered in a worldwide competition. Oliver's poem was in the top 20 internationally. Wow! A big thank you to the English Department who promoted this excellent poetry competition.

Year 7 Welcome Evening

Thank you parents for your support for Monday's Welcome Evening. I hope you found it useful to listen to the speeches and talk to each other. I really loved hearing some of the Year 7 boys play piano and violin. In case you missed the evening the presentation is linked below. A big thank you to Miss Hearn and Mr Doughty.

Bali Rai

The best-selling author Bali Rai returned this week to speak to our KS3 students. He wrote to us saying, 'it was lovely to see you all and be back at your wonderful school. I had a great day'.

Thank you to Miss Brown and Mrs Ward for their hard work in organising this event.

Show Racism the Red Card

On Tuesday, all Year 8 pupils took part in workshops run by the organisation Show Racism the Red Card. Show Racism the Red Card is the UK’s anti-racism educational charity and was established in January 1996. The organisation utilises the high-profile status of football and football players to help tackle racism in society. The workshops were delivered by two ex-professional footballers and the students were very engaged with the anti-discriminatory messages.

Aston Literacy Project: Reading and Vocabulary in Secondary School

A select few of our Year 7 students have recently taken part in the Aston Literacy Project (with Aston University) which has been working with students since their entry into primary school. The project examines how reading influences vocabulary learning and looks to inform future research into ways in which we can support vocabulary learning. We are running a competition for Year 7 using a Book Token we received for hosting the Aston University team. Thank you to Miss Hearn, Deputy Head i/c KS3 for masterminding this excellent project.

Mental Health Awareness Day - Wednesday 10 October

Wednesday 10 October was World Mental Health Day and to promote awareness of this important issue, the Mental Health Team delivered assemblies to all year groups. We also had a non-uniform day, sold badges and sprayed hair red in order to raise money for a local charity, Footsteps. Thank you to everyone who took part as we raised £1140.60 and, in particular, to the Mental Health Team Molly Castagna, Tom Froggatt, Asam Mahmood and Becky Sykes. On the same day, a workshop was held for some Year 8 and 9 students and delivered by Time to Change, the mental health charity, talking about the importance of looking after your mental health.

We raised £1143.60 for Footsteps Counselling. Thank you to everyone for their generosity and Miss Steadman for organising this

Elevate Education

A big thank you to Marcus from Elevate Education who led a dynamic workshop for Year 10 on prioritisation, time-management and study skills. Year 10 were impeccably behaved.

Duke of Edinburgh

Jai Chauhan: Golden Achievement. This week we have been proud to present Jai Chauhan U6 with his Gold Duke of Edinburgh badge. This is an exceptional achievement by Jai who has committed hundreds of hours of time in achieving the award. Jai has volunteered in a charity shop, developed his badminton, progressed with his learning of the violin and been to both Snowdon and Devon with his DofE. Jai becomes the first Veseyan in recent history to complete his Gold award while still at school and will collect his full award at a royal palace in months to come. Well done Jai!

Thrive - Commando Joe's Launch

Thank you Miss Hearn and the Pastoral Team for running their first Commando Joe's mission for Year 7. Great team work boys!
