My garden plot was larger than I originally planned. This increased myexpenses, income, and labor requirements. The soil test showed that the soil was verylow in all of the plant nutrients, so I needed to add more fertilizer than originallyplanned. Because of the increased size, I needed to purchase additional supplies suchas tomato cages and produce boxes for the crop that I sold. The majordisappointments were with the quality of the tomatoes at the end of the season andthe sweet corn. My sweet corn was infested with corn borers. I did not know thisuntil I started to harvest the crop. This damage prevented me from selling any of thecrop, but the family was able to use most of the corn for home use.

I am holding one of the first tomatoes from my home garden project late one evening. This was one of the high quality tomatoes; however some of my very late ones in the season showed signs of rot.
