Druga Godba, held for the 33nd year running, is a festival of world music and, to a lesser extent, contemporary jazz. It ranks among Europe’s best festivals of alternative music difficult to fit neatly into musical categories.Druga Godba is well known for bringing to Ljubljana leading artists from different backgrounds and musical traditions who draw inspiration from traditional musics from around the world and are committed to creative musical exploration. Due to its enthusiasm for ‘discovering’ less well-known music from around the globe, its line-up is often ahead of trends. The influential British magazine Songlines has ranked Druga Godba among the world’s 25 best international music festivals several times.www.drugagodba.si

BIO, organized by Museum of Architecture and Design, is an international platform for new approaches in design. BIO was founded back in 1963, making it the first design biennial in Europe. Today BIO is structured as a long-term collaborative process, where teams of designers and multidisciplinary agents develop alternatives to established systems. With curators like Jan Boelen, Angela Rui and Maja Vardjan, BIO works as a testing ground, where design is employed as a tool to question and improve our daily life, among different and multidisciplinary design approaches that touch systems, production, services, scientific research, humanistic issues, unexpected conditions for the production of our habitat. Open: 10:00 – 18:00. Closed: Mondays

A New Age is Coming! Industry - Labour - Capital25 Oct - 21 May, City Museum of LjubljanaThe exhibition on industry in Ljubljana also topicalizes the ever changing relations between labour and capital. It depicts how Ljubljana dealt with new industries as they arrived. The show starts off with the sugar refinery on the banks of the Ljubljanica river. It goes on to depict capitalists of the time, businessmen whose vision made Ljubljana into an industrial hub. At the same time, the exhibits tell the story of the life of the proletariat. The rise of industry in the late 19th and early 20th century takes a sharp turn after WWII, when factories were nationalised and many capitalists chased out of the country. The end of the war marked the beginning of the ascent of large socialist enterprises. The next break came in the 1990s, when Slovenia shed socialism and enterprises were privatised. Sundays at 16:30 guided tours in English. Open: 10:00 - 18:00, Thursdays 10:00 - 21:00. Closed: Mondays

Damjan Gale: The Architect of Light, a retrospective photography exhibition 28 Mar - 4 Jun, Jakopič GalleryDamjan Gale was an architect that photographed and a photographer that put architecture in the focus of his interests. He knew and understood architecture in the entirety of its process of creation. The same can be said for his photography - from the process of taking photographs, setting up motifs, work in the darkroom and all the way to the final presentation - there were no coincidences in this process, and the final result always had a sublime sense of balance between the aesthetic and documentary. His photographic oeuvre consists of interpretations of contemporary Slovenian architecture, the baroque in Slovenia and works of Jože Plečnik. Especially important in his oeuvre are Plečnik’s columns, with which Gale was a regular guest of exhibitions at home and abroad. During his lifetime and after his premature death, Gale never received an expert evaluation and a

everyday tools that began back in 2012 and is still going on. The series consists of portraits of street sellers carrying their own goods, slum dwellers, and still lifes of common daily utensils. The idea is to enrich the series with everyday objects from the people of Ljubljana, with a special focus on local minorities. For three days, Filippo Romano and Silvia Orazi will go around Ljubljana portraying and interviewing people, asking them to choose and pose with their own everyday object.Open: 10:00 - 13.00 and 14.00 - 18.00, Saturdays 10.00 - 12.00 and 12.30 - 14.00, Sundays 10.00 - 13.00. National GalleryThe National Gallery, Slovenia’s foremost museum of historical art, holds the country’s largest collection of fine art from the High Middle Ages to the 20th century. It also houses a permanent exhibition of works by Zoran Mušič (1909-2005), one of Europe’s leading modernist painters, and various temporary exhibitions. The National Gallery’s permanent collection, divided into sections according to historical periods, is comprised of nearly 600 works by Slovenian and European artists. Among other things, it includes medieval sacred art, works of art by the Baroque artists, neoclassical paintings, works by the

Realists, and the famous masterpieces of Slovenian Impressionism. The gallery also keeps one of the largest pieces of Baroque art in Ljubljana, the Fountain of Three Carniolan Rivers by Francesco Robba, whose original site in front of the Town Hall is now occupied by its replica.Apart from the above, the National Gallery houses a room called Gal’s Room, where children’s and family events are held on a regular basis, an extensive library, a gallery shop with a reading corner, and a café.Open: 10:00 - 18:00, Thursdays 10:00-20:00. Closed: Mondays, 1 May

Zoran Mušič (1909-2005)Permanent exhibition at the National GalleryZoran Mušič, the best known 20th century Slovenian-born painter and a man with more than one homeland, spent most of his life between Venice and Paris. He mostly painted landscapes, still lifes, portraits, Dalmatian donkeys and horses, trees, views of Venice, double portraits with his wife Ida, and poignant self-portraits depicting him as an old man. His visual motifs were always related to the Slovenian region of Kras and its typical scenes. He became world famous with his series of paintings We Are Not the Last, in which he relived the scenes he experienced in the Dachau concentration camp. Ljubljana’s National Gallery displays the world’s only permanent survey exhibition of Mušič’s work, which explores the entire range of the famous artist’s painting techniques. Open: 10:00 - 18:00, Thursdays 10:00-20:00. Closed: Mondays

Capa’s retrospective exhibition features 97 black-and-white photographs showing pivotal events from the five wars he documented in his brief life: from the Spanish Civil War, the Second Sino-Japanese War, World War II including the Battle of Normandy on Omaha Beach and the liberation of Paris, the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, and the First Indochina War. The exhibition also presents a series of portraits of his friends and artists, including Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso.Apart from Henri Cartier-Bresson, Capa was one of the most celebrated founding members of the Magnum Photos agency in Paris in 1947; in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of its existence the exhibition materials are being supplied by this notable photo agency. Slovenian HistoryLjubljana CastleSlovenian History, Ljubljana Castle’s permanent exhibition, shows the dynamic history of Slovenia and Ljubljana. Slovenian territory, lying at the junction of natural routes between the Alps, the Adriatic Sea and the Pannonian Plain, has been the point of convergence of different peoples and cultures since prehistory. The exhibition covers the Slovenian history from the earliest traces of human presence (200,000 BC) to the landmark events following Slovenia’s independence in 1991 and presents the societies of the different periods, the state formations, the political, social and economic circumstances, migrations, transport, culture, architecture and the everyday life.Open: 10:00 - 20:00 daily

Plečnik CollectionThe new permanent exhibition at the Plečnik House in Trnovo presents the most important projects of the late architect. Plečnik’s creativity comes to life through the plans, models and photographs of his creations such as the Zacherl House in Vienna, Prague Castle, the National and University Library in Ljubljana, the Ljubljana Central Market, Žale Cemetery, the Church of St. Michael at the Ljubljana Marshes and numerous other masterpieces. Several plans of Plečnik’s never realized visions are also on display. The Cathedral of Freedom, the master’s vision of the Slovenian parliament, is especially worthy of our attention.Guided tours: every hour, on the hour (the last guided tour at 17:00). Gionata Gatto: GeoMerce: Turning Plants into Miners BIO 25: Associated Project24 – 28 May, Kresija GalleryCertain plants absorb heavy metals from the soil, and accumulate them in their leaves. Starting from there, GeoMerce reimagines the way we think of agriculture. Given that some heavy metals are also listed on international commodities markets, this project reinterprets fields and crops as financial assets. In the installation, the absorption process of plants is tracked and crossed-referenced with the real-time values of the accumulated metals, imagining a future in which the lines between agriculture and finance are blurred.

One of the most prominent African musicians of all time and one of the most distinguished voices of West African music since the 1970s. Depeche Mode are considered to be among the originators of electronic pop music. After having left a significant mark on the sound of the 1980s, they further broadened the scope of their musical expression in the 1990s and made a name for themselves as one of the most successful bands of the past few decades. In May 2017 they are going on a world tour in the Global Spirit Tour which will also promote their new album Spirit.
