CO2 -"towards the low carbon economy"

landscaping - exterior/interior - how it can help the process...

the process...

- criteria of surface area: each plant of more than 1,0m in height saves 500m2 of rainforest with the World Land Trust in the UK

or - criteria by weight: each plant of more than 1,0m in height sequestrates 1 tonne of atmospheric CO2 via Acció Natura in Barcelona

CO2 -"towards the low carbon economy"

- benefits

- direct and positive action against climate change

- most positive effect for improving environmental image and profile - for clients and public aswell as employees

- accumulation of a positive balance brought forward to set off against future liabilities to EU wide Carbon Taxes

- valuable connection with the world of conservation and environmental action to assist "networking" processes and marketing campaigns

sustainable design- "the total beauty of sustainable product design"

- "CO2- only part of the equation"

- use criteria of "cyclic", "solar", "safe, efficient"(ie..less), "social" and now "carbon embodied"

- waste - 30 tonnes is generated for each tonne of product brought to market ... then 98% of these are thrown away within 6 months... we consume our own body weight in products every 2 days - "product points" - aimed at uncovering the "hidden ugliness" of environmental impacts per tonne of product eg. ... bioplastics, wood = 1 point / tonne leather, paper, textiles = 5 points / tonne aluminium, stainless steel = 15 points / tonne

Page 5: Env presengfv220109

THINK TANK 05 > SCPaisajismo

sustainable design- "the total beauty of sustainable product design"

- 80:20 plan for products

- the objective is to be 100% sustainable ... but this is not practically possible in the short term

- environmental impacts are : extraction of raw materials energy in processing/making waste generated during making fossil fuels used in distribution packaging required

- multiply the "points per tonne" for a product by its weight

- create a ranking of materials flows and prioritize them in the design process

Page 6: Env presengfv220109

THINK TANK 06 > SCPaisajismo

sustainable design- "the total beauty of sustainable product design"

- 80:20 plan for products

- take the top 20% of materials flows by product that cause 80% of the environmental impacts

- plan a strategy to make them 80% sustainable by 2020 and 100% sustainable by 2100.

dejarselos 80% sostenible por el año 2020, y 100% por el año 2100

sustainable design- "the total beauty of sustainable product design"

planting schemes to consider ... - the practice of “Xeriscaping” for "greening" of exterior and interior spaces with recycled materials ... ie.

- choice of species that are drought tolerant - use of recycled industrial glass

pieces as "mulch" - use of "feature rocks" and

stones instead of plant specimens - specification of "intelligent"

irrigation systems using GPS - treatment of soils with organic matter including "biochar" to improve their water retention properties

sustainable design- "the total beauty of sustainable product design"

– innovations to improve an environmental profile of the studio

- micro wind turbines installed on roofs - small dimensions with diameters of 1-2m. and power outputs of up to 2,000 kWh/year

- photovoltaics panels in the form of walls and sun shades from the US and Australia

- water walls of glass as seen at the UK pavillion at the Expo92 in Seville

"Each day more solar energy falls on the Earth than the total quantity of energy consumed by the entire world's population of 6bn. during 25 years" US Dept. of Energy

– innovations to improve an environmental profile of the studio - application of the Seawater Greenhouse Technology www.seawatergreenhouse.com in order to climate control and condition the interior of projects close to the sea. Prize winner from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland in 2007 - "Innovation in the field of World Environmental issues" There are proven examples already in the Canaries, Dubai and Oman. It produces fresh cool water without energy apart from solar. This represents a natural and "carbon neutral" solution for zones close to the sea. For large buildings it also represents an alternative energy solution to reduce or take the place of mechanical air-conditioning loads Support from Greenpeace and Func.Eco.Des.

"sustainable design" - steps to improve the studios environmental profile

- simple practices to adopt internally …

- institute an intranet for environmental ideas and

as a bulletin board.

- quantify and justify the annual spend on various "cost centres"

- paper - print cartridges - coffee and drinks - pens and pencils - mains grid electricity - water - travel, transport and fuel - stationery

- petition the involvement of all staff for their ideas for "cost cutting" above criteria . A suggestions book at Rover Cars 1999 brought about Pounds1 million in cost savings .

"sustainable design" - steps to improve the studios environmental profile

- simple practices to adopt internally …

- suggest to the building owner that a white roof texture be applied to reflect infra-red and reduce thermal gain in summer This measure is now becoming law in California.

- register the studio with the Green Building Council Spain www.ccve.com

- participate in the accreditation process for the environmental standard ISO:14001

- take advantage of the new "Planet Range" of plant containers formed from resin and recycled materials - plastics, old bank notes, CD roms, cardboard etc.

“Go MAD – make a difference!”

- sponsor a project in your area to plant more trees in the street. New York City has a budget for 1m. new trees during the next 4 years. They have worked out the return on investment as being $122m. Mayor Michael Bloomberg estimates that for every $1invested there are $5,60 in returns for the city and its citizens. www.milliontreesnyc.org www.treesforcities.org (founded by RichardRogers)

- include green roof systems and designs in your future projects : we work using "rockwool" as a planting medium for vertical gardens and light-weight roofs.

Page 14: Env presengfv220109

THINK TANK 14 > SCPaisajismo

"sustainable design" - steps to improve the studios environmental profile

“Go MAD – make a difference!” - roof gardens and light-weight roofs - use "rockwool" - GRODAN from the Rockwool Group - attractive, helping to integrate the building in to the surrounding - low-profile and weight / m2 - 25% the weight of soil - easy to manouevre, install and dismount - excellent water retention properties + 50:50 ratio air:water at alll times - produces a delay in the "run-off" of storm water - lengthens the life of the roof membrane by 200% due to protection from UV - reduces ambient temperatures both externally and internally in summer by up to 10ºC. - production certified to ISO9001 + 14001 - allows fast and efficient removal and recycling of material. - planting grows rapidly and roots extensively in the rockwool material within 1 year. - operates well with a "flood & drain" irrigation system

“Go MAD – make a difference!”

- switch off computers at night : the effect of this in the UK in 2002 saved €110m.in energy costs and 2,8m tonnes of CO2 / year - specify "Energy Star" appliances for printers, modems, scanners etc. - use pens and pencils made with bio-plastics www.remarkableoffice.co.uk www.naturalcollection.co.uk - use ceramic cups instead of paper or plastic - use "solar tubes" if possible to maximise daylight www.solatube.com - minimise the use of plastic - bags / packaging in favour of cardboard or textile. Only 15% of plastics are recycled in the UK = 8 billión bags each year!

Page 16: Env presengfv220109

“Go MAD – make a difference!”

- “The 3R's" : Recycle,ReUse,Reduce Recycling of waste creates for

each 1m.tonnes the equivalent of 400-600 new jobs - Use tap water with a filter - in the UK in 2006 people spent €2,1billion to buy 13 billion plastic bottles of water. This converts to the emission of 2,2 million tonnes of atmospheric CO2(including transporte from source).

- Invest in a system of computers in a "grid" in order to improve performance and reduce power consumption www.gridsystems.com

"sustainable design" - steps to improve the studios environmental profile

“Go MAD – make a difference!”

- reduce consumption of materials and resources with the rule "reuse before recycling" and do not assume that someone else is going to do it!"

- a studio in London in 1999 of similar size to yours found that its levels of consumption for various "cost-centres" as a "benchmark" for achieving savings in materials ... - 1.410m3 of water = 200 cups/person/day! - 3.358 pens = 20/person - €21.250,00 in electricity=€141,00/ person - 36.000 Kenco drinks capsules / year!

"sustainable design" - steps to improve the studios environmental profile

“Go MAD – make a difference!” - buy and use recycled paper from post- consumer waste ... such as the "Evolve" paper range tested to ISO14001,The Blue Angel and FSC - 80 gsm. - recycle all laser printer and toner cartridges - take advantage of the train system in place of planes when possible : see image right for CO2,NOx,CO,H2O. A plane produces the same emissions of CO2 as if every passenger drove the same flight distance in their own cars. CO2 emissions in grams / tonne-kilometre boat 30g./t-k train 41g./t-k car 207g./t-k plane 1.206g./t-k

“Go MAD – make a difference!”

- initiate a programme of composting with a compostor. Install in any exterior space with shade in order to compost left-over food such as sandwiches, coffee grounds, teabags, plant prunings etc. Reutilize the compost produced for interior office plants or at home in the garden. www.soilassociation.org www.cat.org.uk www.harrodhorticultural.com - recycle paper and glass in separate containers depending on the local laws in your area - construct a "roof-garden" with plant containers on wheels-flexible and functional with rockwool as the growing medium to save weight from "Grodan".

“Go MAD – make a difference!”

- invest in a system of computers from Hewlett Packard : low energy consumption and install an HP Dynamic Smart Cooling system in order to achieve "real time" changes to air-conditioning, fans, computers. Energy savings are typically around 20-40% www.hewlettpackard.com/environment

- change the company cars of the studio for the VW Lupo - this model achieves 100km using only 3 litres of fuel and emits 20% less CO2 than a "hybrid"(eg.Toyota Prius) and 40% less than a Ford Ka and 75% less than a Porsche 911. Also VW is offering its own "carbon offset" plan with the Golf in local forests. www.movimientoBlueMotion.com

"sustainable design" - steps to improve the studios environmental profile

“Go MAD – make a difference!”

- buy locally - this is the essence of "green" daily life - 1kg. of apples from New Zealand in the shops in Europe results in 1kg. of CO2 for each 1kg. of apples. 1kg. of apples from Spain produces only 0,05kg. of CO2 - establish a weekly or fortnightly order with an organic farm with the participation of the whole or part of the studio collectively. www.cestaverde.com has deliveries in your zone twice a week. €4,50 delivery charge for orders > €70,00

- sign-up as an organisation or individually with the ethical bank "Triodos Bank nv based in Las Rozas. The bank is growing rapidly in Spain. It is linked to the Fundación Ecologia y Desarollo in Zaragoza www.triodos.es

“Go MAD – make a difference!”

- balance your CO2 emissions for each "workstation" in your studio with interior plants! >>> following presentation "Carbon Balance" or go to www.vivaverde.es >>> see final slide for offset providers <<<

- share car journeys within the studio in order to reduce costs and CO2 emissions - "car pooling"

eg. www.liftshare.org On average 60% of car journeys

have only 1 person in the car.

- sponsor the programme being developed by Red Book Studios to help the World Land Trust and Acció Natura to gain corporate donations in order to buy hectares of rainforests specifically from a "grid" overlay on satellite maps. Benefits for participating organisations include their logo appearing on the web page of the map as the "conservor" of that "grid". Each "grid" has a an interface to a database with interesting data on the flora and fauna in that zone. Further ahead the installation of "web cameras" on site in the rainforest projects will be linked in to the programme. www.redbook.es/satrapa >>> the bank HSBC has launched a similar programme for children principally https://virtualforest.hsbc.co.uk- focus the studios on the large corporations that have participated and linked to the "Carbon Disclosure Project"- banks and insurers are competing to be the "best in CO2 emisions index" www.cdproject.net

CO2 - towards the low carbon economy

"Consider the story of 2 planets ... the Earth and Venus are almost the same size and have the same quantity of Carbon(C). The difference is that the majority of the carbon on Earth is in the ground - it has been deposited there by various lifeforms over the last 600 million years - and the majority of the Carbon on Venus is in its atmosphere.

Therefore, just as the average temperature on Earth is a pleasant 15C. that on Venus is 463C.

It is true that Venus is closer to the Sun than the Earth ... but the fault is not on our planet ... Venus is three times hotter than Mercury which is right next to the Sun. The fault is in the CO2." Al Gore july 2007

CO2 - towards a low carbon economy

In a green context, organisations can be compared to certain creatures... The Ox, the "Guide-Dog", the Fox , the Dolphin. The priorities of the Dolphin include "global warming" / sustainable development / alternativeenergy / ecological practices / waste reduction / eco-balancing / education and training / internaland external communication / Third World.

"Strategy of the Dolphin" Naturally curious and social . A Natural World example - very popular with humans. By focusing today on tomorrow's issues they demonstrate their comittment with sustainable and profitable solutions. Profiundly intelligent and highly social, Dolphins learn fast and enjoy the experience.
