    INTRODUCTION

v Every individual has rights in relation toEQUUITY,NUTRITION & HEALTH.

The idea to establish a world health organizationemerged from the same process that, in 1948,identified the universal value of human rights.

    WHO's mandate is universal.

It calls for equity in stating that"theenjoyment of the highest

attainable standard of health isone of the fundamental rights ofevery human being withoutdistinction of race, religion,

    political belief, economic or socialcondition."

Some ecologists assertthat ecosystem stabilityis influenced by speciesdiversity. Roughly

speaking, speciesdiversity is a measure ofthe number of speciesliving in a community. The higher the diversity, the greater the stability.Observations thatextremely complexecosystems, such astropical rain forests, remain unchangedalmost indefinitely ifundisturbed support this

idea. Simplerecosystems, such astundra, are less stable, that is, they experiencesudden, drastic shifts inpopulation size.

Simplifying ecosystems byreducing species diversitymakes systems less stableand more vulnerable tooutside influences. Someresearchers maintain that

populations andecosystems rarely, if ever, return to equilibrium oncedisturbed. Returning toequilibrium, if possible, would depend in largepart on the nature and

severity of thedisturbance. Evidencesuggests, that ecosystemscan recover from smallperturbations, such aschanges in rainfall orshort-term drought.
