Abiotic

Non-living things in the environment: example - soil, air, water, temperature

(NOT dead things - they would be biotic since there were once alive!)

Page 3: Environmental glossary. Abiotic Non-living things in the environment: example - soil, air, water, temperature (NOT dead things - they would be biotic.

Biosphere

The part of earth that supports living organisms.

Page 4: Environmental glossary. Abiotic Non-living things in the environment: example - soil, air, water, temperature (NOT dead things - they would be biotic.

Biotic

Living or once living things in the environment....

Having to do with living things

Page 5: Environmental glossary. Abiotic Non-living things in the environment: example - soil, air, water, temperature (NOT dead things - they would be biotic.

Carnivore

Consumer that eats other animals

Page 6: Environmental glossary. Abiotic Non-living things in the environment: example - soil, air, water, temperature (NOT dead things - they would be biotic.

Carrying Capacity

The largest population that a given environment can support over a long period of time

Page 7: Environmental glossary. Abiotic Non-living things in the environment: example - soil, air, water, temperature (NOT dead things - they would be biotic.

Community

A group of the different species (2 populations) living together. Example: coral reef, forest floor

Page 8: Environmental glossary. Abiotic Non-living things in the environment: example - soil, air, water, temperature (NOT dead things - they would be biotic.

Consumer

Eats other organisms for food (animals)

Page 9: Environmental glossary. Abiotic Non-living things in the environment: example - soil, air, water, temperature (NOT dead things - they would be biotic.

Decomposer

Breaks down remains of dead organisms

Page 10: Environmental glossary. Abiotic Non-living things in the environment: example - soil, air, water, temperature (NOT dead things - they would be biotic.

Ecology

The study of the environment and the interactions of organisms in the environment

Page 11: Environmental glossary. Abiotic Non-living things in the environment: example - soil, air, water, temperature (NOT dead things - they would be biotic.

Ecosystem

Living and non-living things in an area Examples: forest with river and rocks, coral reef with sand and water

Page 12: Environmental glossary. Abiotic Non-living things in the environment: example - soil, air, water, temperature (NOT dead things - they would be biotic.

Energy Pyramid

A graphic that shows the loss of energy at every level in an environment

Page 13: Environmental glossary. Abiotic Non-living things in the environment: example - soil, air, water, temperature (NOT dead things - they would be biotic.

Food Chain

a. shows what eats what in an environment

b. always starts with producers

c. Arrows go from what is being eaten to who’s eating it!

Page 14: Environmental glossary. Abiotic Non-living things in the environment: example - soil, air, water, temperature (NOT dead things - they would be biotic.

Food Web

A web the show many food chains in an environment

Page 15: Environmental glossary. Abiotic Non-living things in the environment: example - soil, air, water, temperature (NOT dead things - they would be biotic.

Habitat

Environment where something lives

Page 16: Environmental glossary. Abiotic Non-living things in the environment: example - soil, air, water, temperature (NOT dead things - they would be biotic.

Herbivore

Consumer that eats plants only

Page 17: Environmental glossary. Abiotic Non-living things in the environment: example - soil, air, water, temperature (NOT dead things - they would be biotic.

Limiting Factor

Anything that keeps a population from growing too large. Ex: food, living space, water

Page 18: Environmental glossary. Abiotic Non-living things in the environment: example - soil, air, water, temperature (NOT dead things - they would be biotic.

Niche

An organism’s way of life in an ecosystem, including habitat, food, predators, and competition

Page 19: Environmental glossary. Abiotic Non-living things in the environment: example - soil, air, water, temperature (NOT dead things - they would be biotic.

Omnivore

Consumer that eats plants and animals

Page 20: Environmental glossary. Abiotic Non-living things in the environment: example - soil, air, water, temperature (NOT dead things - they would be biotic.

Population

A group of the same species living together. Example: pride of lions, Christmas tree farm

Page 21: Environmental glossary. Abiotic Non-living things in the environment: example - soil, air, water, temperature (NOT dead things - they would be biotic.

Producer

Makes its own food through sunlight (plants)

Page 22: Environmental glossary. Abiotic Non-living things in the environment: example - soil, air, water, temperature (NOT dead things - they would be biotic.

Scavenger

Consumers that eat the bodies of already-been-killed animals
