Health and Safety Stewardship and Progress
-
In addition, we must focus on hand protection due to the fact that nearly 65% of injuries were hand injury cases in 2015. In the following year, one of our targets to monitor and tackle is to improve and promote this issue, which is consistent with our long-term health and safety strategy.
To enhance the safety knowledge within the Group, we conducted various in-house trainings with training consultants or organisations to share the best practices and trade norms with our staff in 2015. The trainings gave them confidence and knowledge that they can all be on-site safety personnel.
As in previous years, JEC provides EHS training for management trainees under Scheme “A” training accredited by HKIE. Over the past ten years, more than 100 management trainees have graduated from this program. EHS training is especially critical as engineers play an important role in occupational safety and health and environmental protection. A safe design can address occupational safety and health needs in the design process to prevent or minimise the work-related hazards and risks associated with the construction, operation, maintenance and disposal of facilities, materials and equipment. In addition, effective engineering controls and efficient design can cut wastage and reduce the environmental impact. This in turn strengthens the competitiveness of our organisation.
JEC Hong Kong fully supports our staff and sub-contractors to use the stepladder or hop-up platforms in restrictive spaces and suitable working platforms or other safe means of support, and avoid the use of non-international standard ladders or substandard scaffolds when they are working above ground. We encourage sub-contractors to apply through the funding scheme to equip themselves with the relevant step ladders or hop-up platforms on site and in sub-contractor forums.
Most of our business is associated with work at construction sites, which are stilll the highest risk areas and places showing a chronic shortage of skilled labour, particularly in Hong Kong. While we cannot completely eliminate risks, we strive to raise safety standards substantially above the local prevailing norms and equip ourselves to tackle the challenges.
JEC values great importance to enhancing occupational safety and is committed to ensuring that risks to the safety of people at work are properly managed and addressed through local legislation, in-house safety rules, promoting health and safety awareness amongst staff and training. The statistics above provide graphic information and recent trends on work-related accidents in JEC Group and Hong Kong's construction industry. Management uses this data to review and measure the performance of our company against the overall accident rates and the industry average.
While we continue to perform very well against the industry benchmark and the Hong Kong construction industry performance, as well as remaining on track to achieve our set target in 2015 of below 1.4/1000, we incurred a slight decrease in our rolling twelve months injury rate per thousand workers from 1.37/1000 in 2014 to 1.33/1000 in 2015 (please refer to Table 1). Therefore we will not relax or be complacent about the past records; we must strengthen our vigilance and provision of necessary management tools and skills to pursue a culture of zero injuries.

Environmental Protection
JEC Hong Kong sets clear objectives in its environmental management plan every year. We are pleased to conclude that all of our objectives for 2015 were satisfactorily met.
Environmental Targets and Achievements
Note: Key Performance Index / Indices (KPI)
Environmental Stewardship and Progress
Our environmental management system provides a framework for control. It aims to ensure that issues and environmental impacts are identified, standards are established, training is provided, targets are set and audits are conducted. We treat compliance as the minimum acceptable performance standard and continually seek to improve. In 2015 we maintained a zero rate of environmental-related conviction cases.
Energy Consumption
Our 2015 Electricity Consumption KPI aimed for a target of a 5% reduction in our Hong Kong office. We successfully reduced our energy consumption by 6.4% comparing with 2014. We are continuing with our commitment to phase out T8 tubes and replace them with LED tubes at our head office and have met both goals at the time of reporting.

Recycling & Reducing Printing Paper
JEC Hong Kong has implemented numerous in-office recycling and waste reduction schemes since 2006. The goal is to reduce the volume of waste, i.e. to use less paper and to recycle what we must use. In 2015, JEC recycled 89% of paper products consumed; we collected and recycled over 19,000kg of paper waste. Waste reduction is often associated with recycling, but it is more complex than that.
Avoiding waste generation at source and minimising waste are also crucial measures in any waste reduction strategy. Our target for 2015 was to reduce the paper consumed per head by 3% compared to the previous year and we achieved a 7.1% reduction.
We are vigilant in our efforts to reduce paper wastage and coordinate with our customers to submit the tenders by soft copy. Besides, we actively promote paperless meetings, show consideration before printing and require an access card for printing to reduce mistakenly printed documents and occurrence of forgotten printouts.
Environmental Project
Across Asia, every JEC project is approached as a unique challenge to determine the best possible solution for customers in all respects. JEC aims to limit its impact on natural resources, biodiversity and health by considering its actions which have a great potential against the environment – from the products we offer to the sites we operate to the energy we use. JEC is committed to reducing energy and material usage; we practise waste minimisation to prevent pollution from our own business and client operations by offering products and services that enhance energy efficiency and sustainability.

Long Term Health and Safety Strategy for JEC
JEC's launch of the new set of Vision Mission Values (VMV) inspires us to achieve our business growth strategies in coming years. For EHS department in JEC, we also implement the SMART initiative for safety and precautions. We need to stay competitive and productive by further improving our existing activities through better coordination and collaboration. Ensuring the safety and health of our employees is one of JEC’s most important business objectives.
5 key aspects of this theme are set out in SMART for Safety:
Site supervision Managing the needs of employees and workers Alerting and identifying the risks Reviewing and establishing safe working procedures Training to ensure safety at work
It is important to acknowledge from the start that this will not be at the expense of what is already done well, but the areas identified in SMART will require all our collective focus to secure the greatest improvement.
By thoroughly implementing SMART in the employees’ routine activities, the perception of health and safety will be enhanced and all of us will have the duty to improve the work environment. It will build a culture enabling each employee to think about safety and health and put them into practice on a daily basis. By cultivating the correct attitude through a clear policy, established system and management commitment, JEC is confident that we will be able to sustain our high level of health and safety performance and improve on it.
The success of the SMART initiative depends on internal and external stakeholders and all partners to come together and strengthen the culture of safety in JEC workplaces. This success cannot be achieved by individuals alone, but only through our collective effort and strong leadership, which we are confident that we are committed and heading in the right direction.
