Environmental Product DeclarationPlate heat exchanger

Flow principle o a plate heat exchanger

Ala Laval endeavours to perorm its own operations as

cleanly and eciently as possible, and to take environmental

aspects into consideration when developing, designing,

manuacturing, servicing and marketing its products. It does

this by identiying the signicant environmental impacts o its

products and operations and taking appropriate measures

to reduce them. This work is supported by implementingenvironmental management systems (normally certied to

ISO 14001) in all its manuacturing operations.

This Environmental Product Declaration is made in accordance

with ISO 14021. For more inormation, Lie Cycle Assessment

and Sustainability Reports are available on request.

 The product

A plate heat exchanger consists o a pack o corrugated metal

plates. Each plate is tted with a rubber gasket, which seals

the channel ormed between two adjacent plates. In an alter-

native design, every second gasket is replaced by a laser-weldto allow or fuids aggressive to the gaskets. The plate pack

is assembled between a xed rame plate and a movable

pressure plate and compressed by tightening bolts. The rame

plate and the pressure plate are suspended rom an upper

carrying bar and guided by a lower guiding bar, both o which

are xed to a support column.

The size o the unit and the material and number o plates are

determined by the requirements o the particular application

and duty. Each individual plate heat exchanger is optimised

or its duty and, as a result, the usage o materials is kept to a

minimum.

Construction materials

Plate materials

The most commonly used plate material is stainless steel type

316, which accounts or about 80-85% o the volume. Other

materials used include highly alloyed stainless steel, titanium,

nickel and nickel-based alloys. The degree o recycled material

in stainless steel 316 is typically between 60-90%.

Rubber gasket materials

The most commonly used rubber gasket materials are nitrile

and EPDM. Other gasket materials used include FKM-type o

materials and PTFE.

Frame components materials

The rame and pressure plate are normally made o carbon

steel. Other rame components are made o aluminium, chro-mium steel and various types o stainless steel. The degree o

recycled material in carbon steel varies between suppliers.

How to contact Ala Laval

Up-to-date Ala Laval contact details or

all countries are always available on our

website at www.alalaval.com

All rights reserved or changes in specications without prior notication

Packing

Packing material consists o wood, plastics, cardboard boxes

and, in some cases, metal straps. Ala Laval enorces strict

environmental demands on suppliers or all types o packing

material.

Paint

The rames are painted using a water based two-component

polyamide cured epoxy coating pigmented with zinc phosphate.

The coating thickness depends on the corrosiveness o the

environment and is applied in accordance with ISO 12944-2.

Restricted substances

All components are checked against EU legislation and global

agreements such as the Montreal Protocol and the REACH

Candidate List. No components contain any substances on

those lists.

Manuacturing

The major environmental impact during manuacturing comes

rom the construction materials. Energy (electrical, ossil uels)

typically accounts or less than 3% o the total environmental

impact o manuacturing.

All Ala Laval’s manuacturing sites operate with an environ-

mental management system. Data on energy consumption

and emissions to air and water and other environmental actors

are reported annually in Ala Laval’s Sustainability Report.

Use

The heat exchanger as such does not give rise to any emis-

sions and does not consume any energy. To create a pressure

drop – the driving orce or heat transer – across the heat

exchanger, external pumps are normally needed.

During the lietime o the heat exchanger, there may be the

need or the replacement o parts such as gaskets and plates.

In order to maintain the level o perormance, Ala Laval

recommends cleaning at regular intervals, o which the re-

quency depends on application and duty. Ala Laval provides

non-toxic cleaning chemicals containing biodegradable

suractants.

 Transportation

Transportation accounts or a large part o Ala Laval’s CO2

emissions. In order to reduce these emissions, all transportation

providers are evaluated and classied rom an environmental

point o view. Furthermore, strict demands are placed on

transportation providers to propose ideas or reducing the

environmental impact o Ala Laval’s transportation.

End o lie

Dismantling instructions are provided in the user manual. The

unit is readily disassembled into its main components. Waste

o the product is not hazardous (EU Directive 91/689/EEC).

Chemicals must be drained o beore any end o lie treatment

and treated according to local regulations.

Recycling o metals

It is possible to recycle all metallic material, thus reducing the

use o virgin material or the new production o metals. Plates

are sorted according to type o material and rame components

are sorted as mixed scrap.

Incineration/Landfll o gaskets

Rubber gaskets can either be sent or incineration, thus

recovering energy, or be used as landll depending on the

local directives o the country in which the unit has been used.

Packing

Wood and cardboard boxes can be reused, recycled or used

or energy recovery. Plastics should be recycled or incinerated

at a licenced incineration plant. Metal straps should be sent

or material recycling.

Ala Laval endeavours to perorm its own operations as cleanly and

eciently as possible, and to take environmental aspects into con-

sideration when developing, designing, manuacturing, servicing and

marketing its products.
