Ongoing
Paper savings actions around the Institute:
• A number of Faculties changed or trailed how they were supplying data to students, trialling USB and online programs to reduce paper use. These include: Conservation and Land Management – Cert III Horticulture students, with USBs issued containing notes to reduce copying, John Gabrielle, HT, Yallah.
• Electrical engineering, Wollongong campus - all learning resources for the year provided on a USB. We are rolling this system out for ALL our classes in 2014. Warren Heydon, Head Teacher, Electrotechnology
• Food and Beverage, Wollongong: All student orientation guides, SAGS, SOPS, timetables are provided on TAFE USB stick for Cert II, Cert III courses. The 2013 trial was successful and this will be rolled out to Cert IV Hospitality, Diploma and Advanced Diploma Hospitality. Sal Phyllis, Head Teacher, Food, Beverage and Hospitality
• Admin – online enrolment and paper payslips were discontinued. • Metal trades – all learning resources for 1st year apprentices supplied on USB. Bob
Cunningham, Head Teacher, Mechanical Technology & Mining (Fitting & Machining).
Bricklaying has taken the step this year to reduce our printing consumption by providing the new enrolling students with tablets and their theory notes uploaded onto them. This strategy will be introduced across all of our delivery locations being at Moruya, Queanbeyan and of course here at Wollongong. It is hoped that within three years of phasing this in all of our students will be using this system and saving costs on paper resources. Greg Todman, R/HT Bricklaying.

Sustainable purchasing actions around the Institute:
• Metal trades – Replaced coolant for over 100 workshop machines (lathe, milling machine, drills, surface grinder, cylindrical grinder, bandsaw, cold saw) with a more environmentally friendly Castrol HysolTM GS CF, a high performance chlorine free semi-synthetic metalworking fluid. Bob Cunningham, Head Teacher, Mechanical Technology & Mining (Fitting & Machining)
• Yallah campus - We recycle food scraps to the animals on campus, purchased tea towels instead of paper towels for use in our new sustainable building kitchen and purchased biodegradable plates and cups for meeting rooms. Jackie Lindsay, Yallah Campus Manager
• Conservation and Land Management Yallah - using an Ecohort accredited growing media supplier, also supplying Café V with micro greens and salad produce all year in order to reduce green miles John Gabrielle, HT, Yallah
• Food and beverage, Wollongong: Café V supplied with greens from Yallah campus. Planter beds outside Café grow herbs, reuseable Keep Cups promoted and used instead of take away cups for coffee sales. Sal Phyllis, Head Teacher, Food, Beverage and Hospitality,
• Commercial cookery Nowra. Vegetable gardens installed (with pizza oven and rainwater tanks) to reduce purchase of herbs and water.
• ITSA promoted ceramic cups with silicon lids instead of cardboard cups at their canteens.
Community Services – One small but significant change that we implemented in Community Services courses this year was to distribute course documents to students via a USB rather than paper based resources. Not as exciting as starting a veggie garden or worm farm I know but nonetheless, small changes all count. We are very aware of the importance of environmental sustainability in our section and are always looking at ways of improving our practices. Paper is one of our largest resources and so we are looking at changes such as electronic submission of assessment etc… for 2014. – Anne Barrow, Head Teacher, Human Services Tourism Hospitality - Community Services Welfare
