Washington, DC – A new pollfrom Fox News finds that68 percent of voters, in-

cluding majorities of Republicans, De-mocrats, and Independents, say effortsto secure the border should be com-bined with reform of federal immigra-tion laws by Congress. What do votersmean by reform of federal immigrationlaws? Sixty-eight percent “favor allow-ing illegal immigrants who pay taxesand obey the law to stay in the UnitedStates.”

In short, voters want a “both/and”approach to immigration reform, whichis the essence of comprehensive immi-gration reform.

As the Fox News analysis puts it:“While more voters think the govern-ment should secure the border first (21percent) than pass new immigrationlaws (7 percent), most -- 68 percent --say both should be done at the sametime. That includes majorities of De-mocrats (72 percent), Independents (67percent) and Republicans (65 per-cent).” The Fox poll also found that “a61 percent majority of voters think it is‘impossible to seal the border’ so therewill always be illegal immigrant. Abouttwo-thirds of voters (68 percent) favorallowing illegal immigrants who paytaxes and obey the law to stay in theUnited States, little changed from 67percent who favored doing so in 2007.”

Over at CNN, polls from May andJuly present an “either/or” choice:“What should be the main focus of theU.S. government in dealing with theissue of illegal immigration -- develop-ing a plan that would allow illegal immi-grants who have jobs to become legalU.S. residents, or developing a plan forstopping the flow of illegal immigrantsinto the U.S. and for deporting those al-ready here?” Given this wording, 42percent favor a path to legal status and57 percent favor stopping the flow of il-legal immigrants, as if voters can onlyhave one or the other. Buried deeper isthe fact that 81 percent of those sur-veyed favor “creating a program thatwould allow illegal immigrants alreadyliving in the United States for a numberof years to stay here, and apply, tolegally remain in this country perma-nently if they had a job and paid backtaxes.”

According to Frank Sharry, Execu-tive Director of America’s Voice, “Whengiven the option to have both border se-curity and a path to legal status for the11 million undocumented immigrants

settled in America, voters overwhelm-ingly embrace that approach. This isnot only the most popular choice, it isthe most workable solution to the prob-lem of illegal immigration. On the otherhand, when voters are presented with afalse choice between border security ora path to legal status, they are confusedand divided. Which of course is whythose watching Fox should pay more at-tention to the Fox immigration poll thanto the simplistic enforcement-only rhet-oric coming from Republican politi-cians.”

The Fox result is not an outlier. Re-cent polling conducted by Lake Re-search Partners and Public OpinionStrategies for America’s Voice foundthat while a majority of poll respondentssupported the Arizona ‘papers please’immigration law, these same respon-dents showed more intense support forcomprehensive reform proposals andactually favored comprehensive reformby a greater margin than opponents ofthe Arizona law. A whopping 84% ofthose who voiced support for the Ari-zona law also support comprehensiveimmigration reform. The fact is, votersfavor action but strongly favor compre-hensive reform that combines smartenforcement with legal status for thosealready here. Lake’s findings wereechoed in other surveys.

According to Sharry, “As we headinto a campaign season in which immi-gration is bound to be a hot topic, poll-sters, politicians, and parties alikewould be wise to not conflate voters’frustration over illegal immigration withopposition to comprehensive immigra-tion reform. A strong and consistentmajority support comprehensive immi-gration reform that will strengthen bor-der security, crack down on employerswho violate labor and immigration laws, and make sure that immigrants alreadyin the U.S. illegally pass backgroundchecks, pay their full and fair share oftaxes, and study English as a way towork toward citizenship. In fact, mostvoters are dying for their leaders to stepup and solve this problem once and forall. It’s time for Republicans to stop themindless presentation of false choices. It’s time for Democrats to lean into thisissue and do so with conviction. It’stime for Washington to do the popularthing, which in this case, happens to bethe right thing.”

Latinos For Jerry Brown Get Involved

On Tuesday evening, August 10, 2010, and againa week later, Karl Soltero reported that LatinosFor Jerry Brown assembled as a group to or-

ganize their involvement in the coming election scheduledfor Tuesday, November 2, 2010. It is on that election daythat a new governor of California will be elected. The twocompeting candidates are Meg Whitman (Republican)and Jerry Brown (Democrat). This ad hoc group wascalled to action by the efforts of Karl Soltero, Adrian Var-gas and Charles Lostanau who assembled the agenda.Sophie Mendoza, a highly respected Latina communityadvocate, is an advisor.

With Charlie Lostanau acting as convener, the goalwas established to raise $25,000 in support of JerryBrown's (D) gubernatorial campaign. Pete Carillo, Treas-urer, wants checks made out to “Jerry Brown for Gover-nor”. Sid Flores, Esq., supported this effort. Al Castellanoprovided a challenge grant of $5,000 to be matched byothers. Twenty-eight individuals committed to contribut-ing $100 each. Hilbert Morales recommended that themoney be collected as cashier’s checks or postal moneyorders along with the FPPC number. Then the collectedchecks could be directly presented to Jerry Brown when-ever a scheduled meeting occurred.

Morales pointed out that voting begins 24 days be-fore the November 2nd election date because 70% of reg-istered voters in the County of Santa Clara have alreadyopted to vote by mail. The mail ballots are mailed out 24days before November 2nd so a registered citizen mayvote by mail immediately upon receipt of the mail-in bal-lot. “Vote by Mail” now happens on October 7th which is24 days earlier than November 2nd .

Morales also recommended that the $25,000 contri-bution be accompanied by a request for information aboutthe newly elected governor’s appointments to vacant stateagency positions. This list of vacancies could be accom-panied by the minimum qualifications which would permitthis group to recommend qualified individuals from thiscommunity. Morales stated, “Without the appointment ofLatinos to certain key offices, do not expect changes tohappen. Especially those changes which are to be sensi-

tized to the current plight of urban Latinos.”According to a report from Karl Soltero, the meeting

of August 17 was spent on reviewing goals. He observeda high level of commitment, enthusiasm evidenced by thewillingness of volunteers to have ‘fundraising parties’ intheir homes. Pete Carillo would obtain the FPPC (Fair Po-litical Practices Commission) campaign number and holdthe checks made out to “Jerry Brown for Governor”.Adrian Vargas, with the experienced assistance of Mariodel Castillo, a retired radio commentator, would assemblethe supportive statements which are to be posted on theirweb site. Dan Ruellos, a SJSU student and a website‘nerd’, would assemble the LATINOS FOR JERRY BROWNweb site. Joaquin “Jack” Brito is to contact the ‘JerryBrown for Governor’ campaign office to arrange for a faceto face meeting with this group. An effort will be focusedon having press conferences and press releases sent outto all media in an effort to ‘get out the vote’.

Adrian Vargas and Jack Brito would assemble the is-sues and campaign platform.

“Latinos For Jerry Brown” is supported because ofhis past record. These include: 1) His track record of ap-pointment of Latinos to the courts and state agency po-sitions. 2) Brown’s support to achieve equity in fundingof the education system (K-12, +colleges); 3) Support andmaintenance of the safety net programs impacting the un-employed, health care, and essential social services. 4)Brown’s civil rights record including those of immigrants;5) Support of farmworker’s rights; 6) Creation of jobs ina sustaining state economy; 7) Investigation of the veryhigh incarceration rate of Latinos who end up in childrenshelters, juvenile halls, jails, and state prisons. (This phe-nomenon is tied to education & training programs, theJustice system (courts), and effective rehabilitation andsocial skills training programs).

The next meeting of Latinos for Jerry Brown groupwill be on Thursday, August 26th. For the latest informa-tion phone Adrian Vargas (408-314-2284), CharlieLostanau (408-499-8369); or Karl Soltero (408-259-1421).

On Wednesday, August 18, members of different or-ganizations gathered in front of San Jose’s FederalBuilding to protest against potential cuts in Social

Security and Medicare by celebrating the 75th year of Social Se-curity.

“As I tell people, you all can thank me later because I’m pay-ing for those of you currently receiving social security,” said JodieReid, California Alliance for Retired Americans. “Our goal heretoday is to make sure that my kids will still be getting social se-curity and will be paying into it for me, so that I can retire some-time.”

While Social Security has helped generations of Americansretire with dignity, the battle against the federal program is heat-ing up. According to Alliance for Retired Americans, opponentsof Social Security are conducting a multi-million dollar campaigndesigned to fool the public about Social Security to lower thedeficit.

“All through high school if anybody mentioned Social Secu-rity it was pretty much assumed that it’s not going to be there bythe time we get of age,” said Lamar Williams of Silicon ValleyDe-Bug. “Kids grow up, they’re like it’s not going to be there sowhy should I worry about it.”

The event sponsored by California Alliance of Retired Amer-icans, California Nurses Association, South Bay Labor Council, and Edge, explained that some people depend on programs likeSocial Security. They asked people to sign a petition to save theprogram and spoke about the possible solutions.

Some of those solutions include raising the payroll tax capon Social Security taxes for the wealthiest Americans and puttingpeople back to work in good-paying, American jobs. No one therewanted to work him or herself to death.

“These cuts really hurt me and it affects our children, mostlyour new generation,” said Christy Wong of Community HomelessAlliance Ministry. “It’s the human rights that were fighting for.”

The beneficiaries of Social Security that were present at therally believe that the deficit wasn’t created by Social Security andit hasn’t added to the debt. Instead, they recommended that every-one talk to their kids, grandkids, church members and communitymembers because it must be saved.

“You hear so much about all these cuts that are happeninghere and there and people are surviving just on crumbs and thisis exactly why we all decided to come out here and try to get theword out that there’s a lot of people that are suffering,” said Mar-garet Amaro, member of the Retirees Club. “I’m afraid becauseI see a lot of people that were cut off their jobs and that cuts intotheir social security.”

To get more information on how to save Social Security, youcan attend a town hall meeting on Monday, August 30 at 6:00pmat the South Bay Labor Center, Hall A on 2102 Almaden Rd. inSan Jose.

If you are an average adult, you haveenough blood vessels, arteries, veinsand associated capillaries in your

body to circle the earth four times. Placedend-to-end, these vessels stretch to almost100,000 miles. Your remarkable circulatory(vascular) system is vital to keeping yourbody healthy and active. The blood flowingthrough it provides oxygen and nutrientsyour entire body needs.

With age, your vascular system may be-come blocked with cholesterol and plaque, and your blood flow may become impaired. In severe cases, the loss of blood flow maycontribute to stroke, aneurysm and peripheralarterial disease, which may cause pain whilewalking or limb-threatening foot ulcers.Common sense about eating a healthy diet, exercising and not smoking all contribute tofeeling good and keeping your vascular sys-tem healthy.

Like any health condition, if you experi-ence problems with your vascular system, itmakes sense to see the most qualified spe-cialist to manage your symptoms. While

most vascular conditions do not require sur-gery, you will receive the most expert andcomprehensive care if you see a vascular sur-geon. Most often, vascular surgeons manageconditions with medication. Some conditionscan be corrected with non-invasive proce-dures that offer good results and quick recov-ery. Only in the most severe cases is opensurgery required.

Today's vascular surgeons are the onlyspecialists who are skilled in all vasculartherapies. They are comprehensively trainedin medicinal, endovascular (minimally inva-sive) and surgical therapies. Vascular sur-geons are the experts who provide the bestdiagnosis and treatment for vascular condi-tions.

Pay close attention to your circulation, and if you experience problems, see your pri-mary care physician. If your doctor diag-noses a vascular condition, ask them to referyou to a vascular surgeon.

Children's smiling faces will bringjoy to most parents. A toothache, however, can quickly turn a child's

smile into a frown. If your little one reportstooth sensitivity or pain, it may be time to visita dentist. But if your child has no pain or sensi-tivity, you'll still want to use the best preventivetechniques.

Most toothaches are caused by cavities orbacterial infections in teeth. The best defenseagainst dental problems like these is a good oralhygiene routine. Twice-daily brushing andonce-daily flossing is a good first step towardpreventing childhood dental problems. To givekids an even greater advantage for maintaininggood dental health, some parents also choose toincorporate oral care probiotics, such as Evo-raKids (www.myevorakids.com). EvoraKids isa chew that is designed to help support chil-dren's tooth health by introducing beneficialbacteria to the mouth.

"The probiotics effectively compete withcertain harmful bacteria for both nutrients andspace on teeth surfaces," says Dr. Jeffrey Hill-

man, D.M.D., Ph.D., chief scientific officer ofOragenics, Inc. "These beneficial bacteria canreach into the tiny crevices on the chewing sur-faces of the teeth."

However, if your child does happen to com-plain of a toothache or sensitive teeth, despiteyour best preventive efforts, it may be some-thing other than dental disease. Sometoothaches can be caused by injuries, such asloosened, chipped or fractured teeth. Chips andfractures can lead to infection, so children whosustain mouth injuries should visit a dentist assoon as possible. Parents can help preventmouth injuries by making sure that childrenbuckle their seat belts, wear mouthguards andhelmets while playing sports, don't run whereslips and falls are likely, and don't try to chewvery hard foods.

If your child complains of a suddentoothache, make sure it's not something simple, like a piece of food stuck in their teeth or gums, before visiting the dentist. You can also rinsethe child's mouth with warm water to loosenany unseen items. If food is found stuck be-tween teeth, gently remove it with floss.

Research shows that many Ameri-cans could eat healthier meals -- ifthey made more time.

In May, the USDA's food plan estimatedthat an individual would need to spend $70 aweek to prepare healthy food at home. But afollow-up study in the Journal of Nutritionfound that the USDA missed a major cost factor-- time. In fact, the value of the time spent chop-ping and cooking can outweigh the cost of food

Cooking is labor intensive, and time is notan unlimited or free resource. According to aformula developed by economists at the War-wick University in England, an hour of timeequals around $16.55.

Among breakfast, lunch and dinner overthe course of a seven-day week (21 meals), theUSDA recommends taking 9 to 16 total hoursper week to prepare healthy meals -- this meansthe health-conscious cook loses $150 a week inlabor.

Many Americans simply can't spend thatmuch time washing lettuce leaves and choppingcelery. According to the Bureau of Labor Sta-tistics, the average working woman has only

five hours a week to spend on food preparation-- creating nutritious meals at home is an un-likely reality.

Some Americans are turning to meal-deliv-ery services for healthy meals that don't requirehours of cooking time.

Caroline Cederquist M.D., a bariatricphysician and the developer of the Bistro MDmeal plan, which offers physician-designed,metabolically balanced meals and free accessto dieticians, explains:

"When adding the USDA's conservative$70 for groceries and the $150 weekly value oftime in preparing healthy meals, it becomesclear how spending as little as $22.85 a day forBistro MD meals that are delivered right to yourhome is a real bargain."

Americans spend less on food than peoplein many other developed nations, but inexpen-sive junk food comes with a price -- fatigue, nu-tritional deficiencies, obesity and otherdiseases. A study by Johns Hopkins Universitydetermined that 75 percent of all U.S. adultswill be overweight in the next five years.

To meet this challenge, the County of SantaClara Department of Child Support Services(DCSS) Pride team hosted its Fifth AnnualBackpack and School “GIVE-A-WAY” event, which was held on Friday, August 13 at the De-partment of Child Support Services building.

“All of our employees at Child Servicesand other county employees bought the itemsand took time to put this event together,” saidTina Torkelson, of the County of Santa ClaraDepartment of Child Support Services (DCSS).“Kids need to get off on the right foot whenschool starts no matter what their family’s in-come is.”

Eligible families must have an active, opencase with the Santa Clara County Departmentof Child Support Services. Eligible parents hadto bring to this event documents with a validcase number dated within the last 30 days. Chil-dren had to be of school age 5-18 (no pre-school or college), and should be enrolled for

the 2010-2011 school year. The backpack and school supply distribu-

tion was complemented with a resource fair thatprovided information on available services andresources.

“Libraries donated their time and offeredinformation on the many programs they offer. We have a dentist here offering information onwhy it is important to brush your teeth, and wehave West Coast Martial Arts trainers here totalk to the kids about the importance of exer-cise.” Torkelson said. “We were very fortunateto have all these groups and businesses helpingus out for this event.”

The Sheriff and the Fire Department werealso at the event to talk to the kids about howto be safe.

All left over items were donated to othergroups with similar purposes and who mayneed the supplies.

“We are going to be donatin left over itemsto Tri-City Homeless and some women’sgroups across the county.

Over 2,000 backpacks wereprovided to students ingrades k-12 on Friday,

August 13, at Sacred Heart Commu-nity Service.

"What we've really seen is just anexploding need in our communityfrom families that aren't able to meetsome of the basic needs and a lot offamilies, especially with the cuts com-ing down in the education system, arereally concerned about their children'seducation," said Executive DirectorPoncho Guevarra, Sacred Heart.

This yearly event has been aroundfor a few years and is referred to as thePack-a-Back program. The non-profitSacred Heart Community Serviceserves approximately 1,000 people aday and offers a wide range of servicesto those in need, like the backpack pro-gram.

"I came because I have custody ofmy grand kids and this helps us be-cause it's less money I have to spend,"said a grandma, who was waiting to becalled to pick out the backpacks withher grandchildren.

This working grandparent had herhours and work days cut and is reallyfeeling the effects of a bad economy. She realized what a difference thiscould make on her budget and wasglad she heard about it from her neigh-bor.

"Making sure that their childrenstart the year right is a primary concern

among every family," said Guevarra."So in response to people's desire tohave adequate school supplies to startthe year right we've been doing ourPack-a-Back program."

The backpacks have everythingfrom crayons, paper, markers, to fold-ers and a scientific calculator for thosein high school.

The planning began in Februaryand in the last three months the collect-ing of items began. Sacred Heartreached out to its partners, communityorganizations and received supportfrom different companies andchurches.

"This is great help because we stillhave to buy uniforms," said PatriciaPlancarte.

In the past, Plancarte didn't live inthe area so she didn't qualify. It is thefirst time she will not have to buybackpacks for her two elementary stu-dents and a middle schooler. She wasglad to hear about it while she receivedassistance with food.

Registration began on July 28 andinformation regarding the child's ageand gender was requested. In additionto all those resources, Sacred Heart hasalso been able to provide gift cards toevery child so they can buy shoes.

"With so many families worriedabout getting school supplies, the moreimportant issue is worrying about theireducation," said Guevara.

Getting the essentials for school

The latest campaign, "Por NuestrasFamilias- Todos a Votar, (For ourFamilies- Everyone Vote)," made its

way to San Jose on Tuesday, August 17. Ahandful of people met at Most Holy TrinityCatholic Church awaiting the arrival of 15 cam-paign organizers, who traveled across the stateregistering people to vote.

"We need to unite and send a powerful mes-sage to the politicians in Sacramento and Wash-ington DC," said Eliseo Medina, executive vicepresident of Service Employees International

Union (SEIU). Medina is one of the organizers who trav-

eled in the bus that toured the state, beginningin San Diego and ending their trip in the Capi-tol. Some members from the California Teach-ers Association joined him, as well as othercommunity leaders.

Over the last year, it became very clear tothe travelers that there was a great debate goingon in the country about immigration but it wasnot a debate about public policy, it was a debateabout idealogical and political issues. So theydecided that the only way they were going tobe able to deal effectively with the problems

like SB 1070 was to make their voices heard."This election matters because it is about

us, it is about our families, it is about our chil-dren, it is about our future," said Medina.

The bus stopped at a total of nine cities, where 75% of the Latino voters can be found. At every city, people were being helped to reg-ister and commitment cards to vote weresigned. Over 10,000 signatures were gathered.

Although the crowd shouted "everybodyvote," not all of them qualify to register but, the

ones that could, were reminded of the thou-sands of undocumented living in the shadows.A message of unity is sent by the campaign andserved as a reminder to defend the Latino com-munity.

"When I talked to people there (Arizona),the reason why it (SB 1070) passed, it beganand ended with the fact that not enought peoplewent out to vote," said councilmember AshKarla. "If they had got the Latino vote out, thatimmigration law would not have passed anddon't make the mistake of believing that could-n't happen here because it could if we don't getthe Latinos out to vote."

The campaign leaders are worrieed that theLatino community will get disallusioned andthey believe that can lead to disempowermentand things can get worse. They are concernedwith anti immigration policies like the idea ofamending the constitution and repealing the14th amendment.

"Unless there's participation things aren'tgoing to change," said Medina.

Medina wants to send a message to thepoliticians, that there is a price to be paid for at-tacking the Latino community. They will con-tinue their statewide conversation after their laststop in Sacramento. They will send letters, make phone call, go door to door and make surethat the community will be heard like never be-fore. He believes they cannot afford to waste avoice and by voice he means a voter.

To be eligible to vote in the November 2,2010, statewide general election, you must reg-ister by October 18, 2010.

Ambas auras puedenreflejar colores diversos.

“The Kid: Chamaco”

Erin's (Drew Barrymore) wry wit andunfiltered frankness charm newlysingle Garrett (Justin Long) over

beer, bar trivia and breakfast the next morning.Their chemistry sparks a full-fledged summerfling, but neither expects it to last once Erinheads home to San Francisco and Garrett staysbehind for his job in New York City. But whensix weeks of romping through the city inadver-tently become meaningful, neither is sure theywant it to end. And while Garrett's friends Box(Jason Sudeikis) and Dan (Charlie Day) jokeabout his pre-flight calorie-cutting and his full-time relationship with his cell phone, they don'tlike losing their best drinking buddy to yet an-other rocky romance. At the same time, Erin'shigh-strung, overprotective married sister,Corinne (Christina Applegate), wants to keepErin from heading down an all-too-familiarroad.

But despite the opposite coasts, the nay-saying friends and family, and a few unex-pected temptations, the couple just might havefound something like love, and with the help ofa lot of texting, sexting and late-night phonecalls, they might actually go the distance.

Academy Award®-nominated documentaryfilmmaker Nanette Burstein ("On the Ropes")directed "Going the Distance," which marks herfeature film directorial debut, from a screenplayby Geoff LaTulippe. The film stars GoldenGlobe Award winner Drew Barrymore ("GreyGardens"), Justin Long, Charlie Day, JasonSudeikis and Christina Applegate.

This past weekend, the third annualSan Francisco Outside Lands Musicand Arts Festival wrapped up.

Bands like King of Leon, Empire Of The Sun,Al Green, and The Strokes headlined the two-day festival. Unlike last year, festival goerswere only exposed to a single Latino band.

That Latino band was no other than the

Aterciopelados. With one of the best vibes inthe world, the Colombian band sang in front oftheir fans that chanted every song like BoleroFalas, Rio, and Cancion Protesta. They alsoperformed their classic Florecita Rocker, theanthem of the band.

For photos of the entire festival and to seea live interview with Aterciopelados visit,www.LatinoLife.net

On Sunday, August 15, theSan Jose Giants hosted itfirst ever Latino Heritage

night and wore special “Gigantes” jer-seys for the occasion.

Joel Velasquez, a volunteer with theBay Area Gardeners Foundation, andhis wife, Janet Fischer put the event to-gether.

“We put this event together becausewe noticed that The San Jose Giantshave never had a Latino HeritageNight.” Velasquez said. “We broughtthe idea to the team and they loved theidea.”

Velasquez and his wife had beenworking on the event since October of2009 and had several sponsors includ-ing Chevy’s and Alaska Airlines.

“The sponsors were also quick tojump on board and support this event,”Velasquez said.

The Bay Area Gardeners Founda-tion bought 5,000 tickets at a dollar apiece and sold them for $7. Familiescould by a four-pack for $20.

“All the money we made went to-wards our foundation, which offersscholarships to students regardless oftheir status,” Velasquez said. “Ourfoundation knows that some of thesestudents are undocumented, which

makes it harder for them to receive anyform of financial aid. We do not askquestions about their status. We justwant them to be hard workers and bededicated to receiving a higher educa-tion.”

There was also a silent auction thatconsisted of several San Jose Giantsjerseys signed by players.

Velasquez said he felt the event wasa success and that he plans on havingsimilar ones in the future.

The Bay Area Gardeners Founda-tion began when Catalino Tapia sawmotivated students in his communitywhose finances held them back frompursuing higher education. He discov-ered his community lacked founda-tions, organizations, and individualswith a vision to help struggling collegestudents fulfill their educational goals.Catalino, with a few fellow gardeners, wanted to change that.

The Bay Area Gardeners Founda-tion under Catalino’s leadership wasformed in 2002. It began in RedwoodCity, San Mateo County, Californiawhere a large immigrant communitysupports education but lacks the re-sources to pay college expenses.
