WEEK 6: SOUTHERN OREGON

THE LAST TIME THEY MET ...SOUTHERN STEALS SEASON OPENERAug. 28, 2010

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Southern Oregon University upset the No. 21 Eastern Oregon University football team Saturday in the 2010 season opener, 34-30.

Th e Mountaineers had a 30-14 lead with 5:30 remaining in regulation, but SOU would rally with 20 unanswered points over the next fi ve minutes. Aft er holding the Raiders scoreless in the second and third quarters and six minutes of the fourth quarter, Eastern couldn’t hold on to the lead.

Eastern Oregon’s Kevin Sampson fi nished with 227 yards on the ground on 31 carries. Th e junior averaged 7.3 yards per carry. Sampson fi nished with 250 all-purpose yards. Chris Ware threw for 178 yards, completing 15 of 34 passes. Th e Rainier, Ore. native threw three touchdown passes and two interceptions.

Southern Oregon was led by Mike McDonald, who completed 21 of his 40 passes for 346 yards. He threw four touchdowns and three interceptions. Aft er running for 195 yards against Eastern last year, Brandon Baldwin was held to 33 yards on 14 carries. Danny Keenan caught six passes for 110 yards and a touchdown.

Max Hannah had a pair of interceptions in his fi rst collegiate game. Th e freshman added two tackles. Jordan Peiler also had an interception for EOU. Dallas Smith led Eastern with 10 tackles and a fumble recovery.

Th e Raiders struck fi rst at the 11:05 mark in the fi rst quarter. McDonald connected with Vance Beach on a 31-yard strike. Five minutes later the Mountaineers would answer with a 10-yard pass from Ware to Gary Cole. Baldwin would close the fi rst quarter scoring with a 15-yard run.

Th e next three scores would all come from the EOU placekicker, Nick Knell. Th e sophomore hit fi eld goals of 37-yards, 26-yards, and 27-yards in the second and third quarter. With the Mountain-eers leading, 16-14, Ware found Dillon Bedford on a 15-yard strike with 2:49 left in the third quarter.

Two minutes into the fi nal quarter, Kirk Miller broke the EOU school record for touchdown pass receptions in a career. Ware found Miller in the corner of the Raider endzone to complete a four-play, 66-yard drive. It was Miller’s 19th career touchdown reception, breaking Kyle Washburn’s record set from 1996 to 1999.

Southern Oregon would complete the scoring with three touchdowns over the fi nal 5:27. Beach caught a 20-yard pass from McDonald, Keenan caught a 49-yard touchdown pass with 3:14 remaining, and JaRod Hill caught a 14-yard pass with 41 seconds left .

Th e Mountaineers began their fi nal drive at the Southern 41-yard line aft er a 38-yard kickoff return from Kedrick Starr. Eastern moved to the Raiders’ 23-yard line with 10 seconds left , but Ware’s last pass was intercepted by Randy Fesser.

Eastern Oregon fi nished with 11 penalties for 140 yards, while SOU committed 10 penalties for 80 yards. Th e Mountaineers fi nished with 434 yards of off ense and Southern Oregon had 401 yards. Th e Raiders gained 55 yards on the ground and EOU fi nished with 256 rushing yards.

Th e victory was eerily similar to the Southern’s comeback a year ago in Ashland when the Raiders crawled back from an early 21-6 defi cit and out-scored EOU 16-0 over the fi nal 26 minutes, includ-ing 13-0 in the fourth quarter to win, 32-28.

WEEK 6: SOUTHERN OREGON

2011 EOU FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK 4-1, 4-1 FRONTIER

WARE MOVES ON TO THE NEXT ONEEastern Oregon quarterback, Chris Ware, passed the school’s rushing touchdowns in a career record with a third quarter run last weekend. Th e senior has scored 22 rushing touchdowns in his career, breaking Damien Johnson’s seven-year-old record at EOU. Ware currently holds 13 school records. Th e Rainier, Ore. native has a chance to break record number 14. He is 25 rushing attempts from topping Tim Sicocan’s 11-year-old school record. Ware ran for his 500th run attempt last week.

FORTY SOMETHINGWhen Eastern Oregon has scored at least 40 points under Tim Camp, it has done quite well. Th e Mountaineers have won 13 of their 14 games when they have scored at least 40 points. EOU’s lone loss when it scored 40 points was the 2009 fi nal game, a 48-43 loss to Carroll in La Grande. Eastern has scored at least 40 points three times this season. When EOU has failed to score 20 points in a game under Camp, it is 0-7. Th e Mountaineers have scored 40 points only once against Southern Oregon since 2000.

A NEW FRONTIERAft er Carroll College has won the past 11 Frontier Conference titles, Eastern Oregon is poised to challenge the Saints in 2011. EOU sits atop the conference standings with a head-to-head advantage over Carroll at the halfway point of conference play. Th e Mountaineers currently own the fi rst tiebreaker over Carroll due to Eastern’s win in Helena over the Saints. Both teams are 4-1 at the halfway point of conference play, with the second round of play to begin next week. EOU welcomes Carroll to La Grande on Oct. 22.

HELLO TOP 10Th e Eastern Oregon University football team returned to the Top 10 for the fi rst time in 31 years this season at No. 9 in the NAIA Top 25 poll two weeks ago. Th e Mountaineers fell to No. 17 in the latest national poll. Th e No. 9 ranking was the second highest ranking in pro-gram history. Th e 1980 Eastern team climbed as high as No. 8 aft er its 8-0 start. Th at Moun-taineer team fi nished 8-1 and ended the season ranked No. 11. Eastern Oregon received 225 points in the poll when it was ranked No. 9.

HOW DID WE ARRIVE AT FIVE?If the Mountaineers win Saturday they will do something that has only be done 17 times in 82 years of EOU football, and that’s win fi ve games in a single season. Eastern has posted at least fi ve wins in each of the past three seasons aft er a 1-10 season in 2007. Th e Mountain-eers have only began fi ve seasons at 4-1, and 5-1 three seasons. Th e last time Eastern was 5-1 aft er its fi rst six games was 1980. EOU began the 1975 season 5-1, and the 1973 season 7-1. Eastern needs a win Saturday to match the 5-1 starts.

NOT A BAD STARTEOU has started two seasons, 4-0, including the school’s best start in 1980, when Eastern won the fi rst six games of the season. Eastern has won four straight games during a season six times since beginning football in 1929. Th e Mountaineers have posted three straight wins only 17 times in 82 years. Th e Mountaineers started the season 3-0 for only the fourth time in the program’s 82-year history. Eastern has the opportunity to win its fi ft h game of the season aft er only six games this Saturday.

SEATTLE’S BESTEastern runningback, Kevin Sampson, is in the top 10 in several statistical categories. He is fi ft h in the NAIA in rushing yards per game (116.2), and total rushing (581). Sampson is eighth in total scoring from touchdowns (48), and all-purpose yards (733). He is ninth in total scoring (48). Th e senior is 11th in scoring per game (9.6). He is 12th in the nation in all-purpose yards per game (146.6). Th e Seattle, Wash. native is 334 rushing yards away from breaking Tim Sicocan’s 11-year Eastern Oregon school career record.

THIRD DOWN? NO PROBLEMTh e Mountaineers are taking care of business on third down so far this season. Eastern Oregon is currently fi rst in the country on third down, convert-ing 52 percent of the time. EOU has made fi rst downs on 36 of its 69 third down attempts. Last week against Rocky Mountain, EOU was 7 for 16 on third down. Th e Mountaineers are 10th in the nation on fourth down conversions as well. Eastern has made eight of its 12 attempts on fourth down this season. EOU scored on its fi rst six possessions at Montana State-Northern.

GONE CAMPINGEastern has found winning territory under its head coach Tim Camp. Th e Mountaineers won their 20th Frontier Conference game under Camp this season. Only Don Turner from 1978 to 1981 reached 20 overall wins faster than Camp in Eastern’s coaching history. With the exception of Carroll, EOU has a winning record against every confer-ence opponent under Camp. Eastern is 4-7 against Top 25 teams under Camp. Eastern has won one of the three meet-ings against Southern Oregon under Camp.

THE LITTLE CIVIL WARTagged by new Southern Oregon head coach, Craig Howard, is the rivalry between Eastern Oregon and Southern Oregon. Th e teams have met 62 times since 1930 and given fans many exciting endings the past few years. Th e game will feature a pregame festivity area for the fi rst time for fans. A large crowd is expected in Raider Stadium which seats 4,000.
