Who would have known that a committee of two formed in 2004 would grow into a group of four and finally a friendship of six club members who would put together a centennial year that was exhilarating and challenging, sometimes very frustrating, but most often rewarding. Our love of El Paso Country Club encompasses at least 221 years of membership among us. By the end of 2006, our centennial year, the friendship was still active, but the committee was totally exhausted even though the “grand finale,” the book, had barely been started. Catherine Crowell CagleCo-author Catherine Crowell Cagle represents a third-generation

El Paso Country Club member. Most of her friends and family call her “Cata” and she holds memories as a child and a former member of the Club dear to her heart. She grew up at the El Paso Country Club…from celebrating birthdays to being presented as a debutante and then onto her wedding reception in the historic ballroom.

Cata is the author of the El Paso Country Club’s eighty-fifth anniversary booklet, and her articles have appeared in several Southwest publications such as New Mexico Magazine. She was a 1983 graduate of the University of Texas at El Paso’s Creative Writing program, and wrote her final paper on “Historic Homes of El Paso.”

Cata is especially proud of being an El Pasoan and a part of the El Paso Country Club’s legacy. It is rare when she gets on the driving range, but she will always remember that the grass is not always greener on the other side of Montoya Street. She reminds herself to look beyond into the deep West Texas sky.

She lives in Austin, Texas, and is the mother of three sons, Travis, and twins, Stanton and Walker.

Jack MahoneyJack Mahoney was born on May 14, 1942, in Boston, Massachusetts.

He graduated from the University of Massachusetts in 1964 with a BA in History and English and from Boston’s Suffolk Law School in 1971. A good part of his early professional career was that of a sports reporter and news editor for the Boston Herald Traveler. Subsequently, for eleven years he was director of Sports Marketing for John Hancock Financial Services, who at that time sponsored the Sun Bowl and the All-America Golf Classic in El Paso. John Hancock was one of the top sports marketing companies in the United States, also sponsoring the Boston Marathon, the New York City Marathon, and the Los Angeles Marathon.

Mr. Mahoney has authored five books, the most recent being The Golf History of New England. He was also director of golf at The International in Bolton, Massachusetts—the world’s longest golf links at 8,325 yards. He presently resides in Weston, Massachusetts.
