• “redeeming the time, because the days are evil” (Eph. 5:16)– To “redeem” is to by up for one’s use or

benefit. He is calling upon us to pay the necessary price in effort and sacrifice to use properly the time (opportunities) we have now. By making the most of our opportunities, we save the value of our time as it passes. It is credited to our spiritual accounts with God.

– You will notice that we have inserted the word “opportunities” as a synonym of the word “time.” That is because the original word for “time” is not the word for chronological time. It is, instead, the word for time as a season of opportunity, a special time of challenge, a portion of time identified with specific work or occurrence. Our “time” is our lifetime of opportunities.

– Specific occasions of opportunity within one’s life are many, but they are brief and fleeting. Once past they cannot be lived again. We can only hope for others. Often another does not come. When an opportunity comes we must realize its value, buy it up, do not waste or squander it, seize it, and harvest it.

– Many who grant the overriding purpose of life fail to discern the significance of a single moment. Each moment must be used properly in order to buy up the time. Our “season” is composed of many moments. Today must not become commonplace. It is important to the whole... Use your time doing whatever God wants you to do, but do not waste it.

• 13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”; 14 whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. 15 Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.”

James 4:13-15
