ForewordI started playing D&D in the mid 90’s, with the AD&D 2E ruleset. It was—of course—a blast, like it did for most of us who started playing as teenagers. In those days also, the Saint Seiya cartoon was running in my country for the rst time, and we were all—as good teens—crazy about it. So, my DM created this overpowered rules he called Cosmo, of course inspired from the cartoon. D&D plus Saint Seiya, what could possibly go wrong? Needless to say, the game went into crazy town, but it was epic and funny as hell.
Nowadays, as I’m trying to do serious game design and my players wanted to play epic levels, I revisited my friend’s idea and give it a more balanced and modern form with the 5th edition rules, trying to keep the original spirit. First thing of course was to rename the power, and thus the Cosmo became the Adari.
e Adari is t into my own campaign setting, with its own cosmology and gods, not set into the classic D&D multiverse. However, is a concept that can easily be imported into any Epic D&D campaign, with little or no changes needed. Hope you enjoy!
The Adari e adari is an invisible energy that fuels the world and binds it together. It has existed forever and some believe that adari itself is the origin of all things, living or not.
At some point in the dawn of time, this energy somehow gained consciousness, taking the name of Adar, the Invisible Fire.
Adar is truly neutral in alignment, and either good or evil can both tap into its power. Mortals use of magic—known as the Art—is understood as the study and manipulation of the adari, and for this reason they worship Adar as the god of magic. However, even though this belief is partially true, and magic is adari wielded and weaved into spells, what mortals don’t under-stand is that the adari is also responsible for the power wielded by the gods, therefore all divine energy is drawn from the adari too.
When characters reach 20th level they may tap into this power in its raw form. Most of the times this ability is bestowed upon characters by powerful beings—like ancient dragons or gods. But sometimes creatures can tap into the adari all by themselves, thanks to a strong will and a big sense of purpose. e most known example of this are the ancients heroes of the rst Holy War. ese three heroes, known as the Holy Triad, wielded the adari to uncanny proportions and were key instruments for the gods in their eorts to cast evil god Ur away.
After characters reach 20th level, the adari levels can be used as a form of advancement, a way to increase the power of characters who have no more levels to gain. Every time you earn 30,000 XP beyond 355,000 XP you gain one adari level.
