    SUPPORT GROUPS

The Adult support group is more popular than ever! Meeting once per month fromJanuary to May for a total of 5 sessions, we saw a dramatic increase in attendance this year. The first two sessions were held at the EWW office, while the remaining three took place atBennys family restaurant in Waterloo.

The Parent/Child support group is still going strong with an increase in attendanceand volunteer support. The main goal of this group was to provide a friendly, supportive spacefor our parents to come together and support one another. Children were given theopportunity to participate in crafts, games and puzzles. Information about epilepsy waspresented to the children in a creative way, mixed in with fun and games.

New this year, ourYouth Connection support group was a great success. The maingoal of this support group was to provide a friendly, supportive space for our members tocome together. Our members shared their stories, their hopes, their concerns and theirfrustrations with each other.

The clients attending were people between the ages of 16 and 25 who are living with

epilepsy, and the people in their lives who support them spouses, parents, other relatives, and friends. The topics and pace of discussion was determined by the needs of the group. Inthe past year, we have had discussions about:

Employment Driving Restrictions Stress and Depression Stigmatization, Discrimination and Bullying Self-Esteem Medications cost, side effects, effectiveness, whether necessary or not Relationships with caregivers, family and friends

Finding the balance between independence and safetyWe have had, over the year, many lively discussions, much sharing of information andsupport, and a growing sense of community within our membership.

    Public Education

This year we have had the privilege to present information about epilepsy to manyworkplaces, camps, schools and individuals.

Highlights include a talk at the UW school of pharmacy. We presented to over 120 futurepharmacists on epilepsy, drug shortages and personal reflections.

This June, camp counsellors from the tri-cities will be learning about epilepsy and seizure firstaid in a fun an interactive way. This will ensure that counselors are aware of the disorder andcan take the appropriate steps to keeping children safe and happy this summer.
