FFrom the desk of Monsignor Brouwers

The Epiphany of the Lord Happy New Year! I hope you have enjoyed this marvelous festive season as we celebrated once again the birth of our Savior at Christmas as well as the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph last Sunday. For most of us, it was not an occasion to gather together with fam-ily and friends in the usual way due to the ongo-ing virus. As we did at Thanksgiving, Msgr. Car-roll and I sat in the rectory kitchen for our Christ-mas dinner rather than going to our families. But, it was still a special moment and gave us occasion to reflect even more deeply on the mysteries of this season: the infinite God sharing in our very fragile humanity in order to draw us all back into his eternal heavenly embrace. And so, we begin another year in God’s grace, very much aware of his blessings on us and our families even in the midst of the stress and fear this pandemic may bring us. I’m sure you have learned about the impact that the coronavirus has had on thousands of families throughout our Archdiocese. Philadelphia has the highest pov-erty rate of any large city in the country and pov-erty has become even more widespread this past year. So, I want to thank you - in the name of the thousands of people throughout the Arch-diocese who will benefit - for your tremendous generosity to the 2020 Catholic Charities Appeal; we reached a new milestone this year! As you may recall from my report on the Catholic Chari-ties Appeal early this year – it was in my 23 Feb-ruary 2020 Parish Bulletin article – our goal for 2020 was $152,390.00. And, as in past years, we exceeded our goal. In fact, we attained a new record - the total collected to date is $192,703! As you know from the literature you receive every year, the Catholic Charities Appeal assists men, women and children throughout the Archdiocese through a whole variety of organiza-tions, programs and other initiatives; in their name, I thank you. Your ongoing generous re-sponse to this annual appeal is a true testimony to your awareness that, as followers of Christ, we are all called to make his love and care ap-parent to all the world, and this is especially im-portant this year as so many people in our Arch-diocese are struggling financially due to the un-employment caused by the restrictions brought about by the pandemic.

Speaking of making our Lord apparent, today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Epiphany of our Lord. As you surely know, Epiphany means “to appear to” and today, it refers to the manifes-tation of the infant Jesus to the gentiles, personi-fied in the wise men who came from the East. As we hear in today’s Gospel, “magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem saying, ‘Where is the new-born king of the Jews? We saw his star at its ris-ing and have come to do him homage.’” Howev-er, in the writings of early Christians, the term “epiphany” was also used in reference to his birth since it was then that God appeared in human form. In fact, “epiphany” often referred to his baptism and the wedding feast at Cana as well, since these were events where Jesus’ divinity was made manifest. Today’s readings at Mass all focus on the visit by the magi but throughout the Divine Office (the official prayer that clergy are required - and laity are encouraged - to pray throughout the day), there are references to our Lord’s birth, baptism and miracle at Cana – all vestiges of the events that have been indicated by this feast. Down through the past 2,000 years of Christianity, it has taken on significance in a vari-ety of ways around the world. In the Western Church, Christians began celebrating the Epipha-ny in 354AD, associating it with the visit of the Wise Men to Jesus. The three kings - tradition has given them the names Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar (representing Europe, Arabia and Afri-ca respectively) - followed the star of Bethlehem to meet the baby Jesus where they offered gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. The gifts were symbolic of the importance of Jesus' birth. The gold represented his royal standing as the new king in the line of David, frankincense symbolized his divinity and myrrh anticipated his death (myrrh is a balm used to prepare a body for burial).

SKS BULLETIN INFORMATION All Bulletin information must be to the rec-tory by 5pm on Monday. Bulletin inserts are due to the rectory at least 10 days before the date requested.

PARISH ACTIVITIES The Solemnity of the Epiphany began to be celebrated in the Eastern Church around 361AD. Even today, many Eastern Churches consider the Epiphany as important as – if not more im-portant than – Christmas. During the medieval period, Christmas was celebrated for the 12 days from Christmas Eve on December 24, until the Epiphany. Even up until the 19th century, January 6 was as big a celebration as Christmas Day in many countries. We Catholics observe Epiphany on a single day, usually on the Sunday after 6 January or, as it happens this year, on 6 January when it occurs on a Sunday. For many Protestant churches, however, the season of Epiphany ex-tends from 6 January until Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent. The last Sunday of the Epipha-ny is celebrated as Transfiguration Sunday. And, some Orthodox Christians, who celebrate Christmas on 7 January, observe the Epiphany on 19 January each year. Across the world, the day's celebration is observed in a variety of ways. In the Spanish speaking world, Epiphany is known as El Dia de los Reyes (Three Kings' Day). In some Latin American countries, believ-ers gather to taste the Rosca de Reyes - Kings' bread. A Jesus figurine is often hidden in the bread and whoever finds the small statue of the baby Jesus hidden inside their slice of the Ros-ca de Reyes throws a party on Candlemas in February. Yes, we celebrate our God’s becoming appar-ent to us through his Son, born of Mary, made manifest to the wise men who came from the East, baptized by John in the Jordan when God’s voice from heaven declared “this is my beloved Son on whom my favor rests; listen to him”, and showing his love and concern for eve-ryone he met by his miraculous acts – the first of which was changing water into wine at Cana. In these – and countless other ways – the Sacred Scriptures recall God’s revelation to us in his Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ. As we celebrate the Epiphany today, let us be grateful to our God, who has made his presence known to all who open their eyes of faith to see!

Walking with Purpose (WWP), a Catholic Bible Study, aims to bring women to a closer relationship with Christ. Personal study and small group discussions at WWP each week link our everyday challenges with the solu-tions given to us through the teachings of Christ and the Catholic Church. We meet either in-person, following social distancing guidelines, on Tues-days 9:15–11:00 am, or via Zoom ei-ther Tuesdays mornings at 9:15 am or Tuesday evenings at 7:30 pm, Septem-ber through April.

The new year is perfect time to join WWP if you were unable to start the program in September! Please join our group of 50 ladies either by zoom or in-person! We will be resum-ing our meetings on Jan 5th 2021, after these few weeks off for Christmas break.

Eucharistic Adoration takes place at St. Katharine’s every Monday from the end of the 8:00 am Mass until Benediction which starts at 4:30 pm and lasts until around 4:45 pm.

Spend some quiet time with the Lord. Read the divine words of Our Lord Jesus, meditate, pray or just sit quietly and listen to His words to you. You will leave the church happy and refreshed. Come and visit for as few or as many minutes as you have. You won’t be sorry. This is the best gift that you could ever give yourself.

Assistive Hearing Units We have a hearing assistance system in church and six hearing assistance units; they are available in the sacristy. If you would like to use one, please come to the sacristy be-fore Mass. The sacristan will show you how to use it. Feel free to bring your own earbuds to ensure a better fit, or, you can use ear-pieces we have with the hearing assistance units.

Parish Nurse Ministry Reminders for dealing with the cold:

    1. Drink plenty of fluids, eat a healthy diet, avoid caffeine and alcohol before going outside.

    2. Check to make sure you have plenty of batteries.

    3. No generator should be inside the home . Place the generator at least 20 feet from the house.

    4. Never shovel or go walking alone in frigid weather.

    5. Wear no-skid boots when shoveling. 6. Shovel on an hourly basis instead of all

at once. 7. Push snow to the side and lift with legs,

not back, with no twist of the torso. 8. If you have a life alert, keep it on you at

all times. Rosary for an End to the Coronavirus

As we continue to struggle through the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, one of our parishioners, Mary Ann Mahoney, is leading a rosary at 7:00pm in church every Tuesday. All are encouraged to come and pray to our Blessed Mother for her in-tercession to her Son, Our Lord, that he may have mercy on us during these challenging times!

Mercy Hospice Thirty-eight years ago (December 1982) the first announcement appeared in the Parish Bul-letin about Mercy Hospice in Philadelphia, and their need for casseroles to feed the homeless women and children. During those years, St. Katharine’s has always been so generous. Thank you for your continued support. If you are making a casserole, the recipes, directions, and pans are located at the Aber-deen Avenue door of the church. If you would like to buy a frozen casserole, the family size frozen dinners of Stouffers lasagna, Macaroni and Cheese, scalloped potatoes or any other family size variety are appreciated. If you would like to donate groceries they are always in need of: Coffee, Creamer, Cake Mix-es, Brownie Mix, Pancake Mix, Granola Bars, Pop Tarts, Peanut Butter and Jelly. These items can be dropped off in the Parish Library. For more information, please contact Jane Dwyer at 610-306-9171, Jane Dooner at 610-505-1436, Susan Wiener at 610-331-3847 or Vicki Warner at 610-937-1648.

Mercy Hospice Giving Tree Thank you to the parishioners who donated gifts for Mercy Hospice this Christmas Season. Every year the homeless women and children who reside there are grateful for the gifts they receive from St. Katharine’s. Over 400 gifts and gift cards were brought to Mercy Hospice, and the women, children, and staff thank you for making their Christmas so special. A special “thank you” to Steph Twohig and the Youth Group for filling the wish list for the young children and babies who reside at Mercy Hos-pice. They were able to get everything on their list! Thank you also to Anne Condello for as-sembling the tags for the Giving Trees, and to the “elves” who helped organize and assemble the gifts.
