Dear Rising Second Grade Parents, Summer 2019
It is hard to believe that the school year is almost over and in a few short months you will move to
second grade. Summer vacation is fast-approaching and we know that you are all looking forward to
some time for rest, rejuvenation, and family. While we are strong advocates for much needed down
time, research shows that up to one month of learning loss can take place during the summer
months (Cooper et al, 2003). To preserve your academic progress, we recommend that you create a
daily routine this summer based on the activities and information outlined in this package.
Completing the reqviired reading and academic exercises wiU ensure confidence and preparation
upon return to school in August. We hope that parents and children will work together to balance
academic practice with other interests in order to gain maximum benefit of the activities.
Reading - Students should be reading 20 minutes daily. The majority of their books should be in
the reading range noted on the final Accelerated Reader report of the school year. The AR level andquiz number of books can be looked up on www.arbookfind.com. Students are asked read one book
in each of the following genres: fiction, fantasy, expositor)' nonfiction, and a biography. Please
record the name of the book, author, and genre on the provided sheet. Your child should complete
the Reader's Response Tic-Tac-Toe to the books that they have read.
Writing - Three writing assignments should be completed. There are prompts for June, July, andAugust. Please refer to the paragraph guide when writing. Students should practice goodhandwriting skills as they write.
Math - All students are expected to have mastered addition and subtraction facts (without using
fingers) from 0-20 before entering second grade. If these facts are not truly mastered, the smdentwill be at a disadvantage as they learn new skills. There are numerous apps and websites to assistwith practicing addition and subtraction. We recommend that your child uses several of thesethroughout the summer so they don't get bored. We have provided addition and subtraction sheets.
The purpose of these is for you to see your child's progress throughout the summer. They are not
meant for the child to sit down and simply fill out in one sitting. According to Singapore Math, fact
mastery has occurred when a child can respond to a problem within 3-5 seconds. Please time your
child as he/she completes one column to ensure accuracy and efficiency. If your child hasn'tmastered any of their facts, begin with the 2's. If they have mastered some, start where they needpractice. As part of their graded classwork, students will have timed tests on their facts during thefall.
We look forward to meeting you all in the August, Enjoy the break with family!
Sincerely, Second Grade Teachers
