Impression:

The New Ormoc City National High Schools (NOCNHS) has a very good number of available learning resources, which are still very relevant to the needs of the students. Though there are still things that need improvement but the school are on it year after year. Hopefully, By the end of this school year they will be able to obtain more resources to fully establish their Learning Resource Center.

ANALYSIS

1. Were the learning resources/materials arranged properly according to their functions and characteristics?

In NOCNHS, the learning resources/materials are properly arranges according to their functions. The books, magazines, encyclopedias are very accessible even if it is your first time to come there.

2. Do the guidelines and procedures facilitate easy access to the materials by the teachers? Why? Why not?

Yes, the guidelines and procedures are very easy to access because it is simple and the teachers and students can easily access the materials because the in-charge of the facilities is always around.

3. What are the strengths of this Learning Resource Center?

One good thing about its Resource Learning Center is that it is always open. The person in charge is always around to assess the needs of the teachers and the students. Aside from this, the Resource Learning Center also has a good number of books and other Learning Materials that the students could use in their research and other learning activities.

4. What are its weaknesses?

Primarily it has a limited space. The School has a good number of students and as I can see, it could not accommodate all of its student’s needs.

5. What suggestions can you make?

When finances can suffice, it would be better to renovate and expand.

pg. 6

REFLECTIONS

1. Which of the materials in the learning resources caught your interest the most? Why?Among the materials in the learning resources at NOCNHS, the antique display or its mini museum has caught my interest because it is very rare to see a library with a mini museum i n it which is also very educational.

2. Which gadgets/materials are you already confident to use/operate?

Among the gadgets that I am confident to use are the computer and the overhead projector.

3. Which ones do you feel you need to learn about?Although I am confident that I can use the computer as an instructional tool, I definitely would like to learn more about Microsoft Power Point and Excel as well as the issues that may be encountered in using them for distance learning.

4. Read an article about your answer in number 3. Paste a copy of the article here. The article I have read for my answer in number 3 is from the Internet written By Glenna Shaw Its URL is http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel-help/interactive-dashboards-using-powerpoint-and-excel-HA102298884.aspx

One of the most powerful features of PowerPoint is the ability to easily add

interactivity without complicated programming. Interactivity in a dashboard can be a

tricky element. Typically interactivity is added as a “drill down” to allow the audience

to see more details about a particular element. On the down side, it’s very difficult to

easily absorb the information when you change from one window to another. It

frequently requires your audience to flip back and forth. PowerPoint provides a

unique ability to overcome this limitation that I like to call “dashboards in motion.”

For my example I’ve created buttons at the top of the screen to allow Rick to

drill down to dashboards displaying the same information for individual years. These

buttons link to a separate slide for the respective yearly details. I’ve applied a

shadow effect to indicate which button has been pressed. You can also link directly

pg. 7

Page 6: Episode 1 the School

from the dashboard elements (i.e. click on a chart to see more details.) For more

about PowerPoint interactivity see my tutorial on Dynamic PowerPoint.

OBSERVATION REPORT

As I came and look the board displays in New Ormoc City National High School (NOCNHS), I notice that there are several board displays around, each with each corresponding titles and objectives. I went directly to Values Education Corner which is sited on the left side of the lobby near the Library. The first display that catches my attention is entitled “Advancing Brilliance in Character” which is printed on a tarpaulin and is properly displayed in the center of the bulletin board. The messages can be easily understood because it is written in English and Tagalog.

ANALYSIS

1. Did the board display design reflect the likes/interests of its target audience? Why? Why not?

Yes, because the board display is neat and acurate. It attracts students’ attention and it invites them to respond or to participate through interactive displays. Also it can promote and facilitates the individuals’ discovery of the personal meaning and patriotism.

2. Was the language used clear and simple for the target audience to understand? Why? Why not?\

Yes, the language used is clear and simple – in fact the diseases are written in Filipino and in English.

3. What do you think was the purpose of the board display? Was it effective? Why? Why not?

For me, the purpose of the board is for the students to build good characteristics through values. I think it is also effective because I know that if students will read the board display; the values that it conveys will be imprinted in their inner self.

4. What suggestions can you make?

Although the display is very effective, there must be another display showing what the effects are if they follow or do the values conveyed.

REFLECTIONS

1. Name at least 5 skills that a teacher should have to be able to come up with effective board displays. Elaborate on why each skill is needed.

In order for a teacher to be able to come up with effective board display he/ she must possess the following skills: First he/she must be Creative in a way that he can come up with an interesting board display so that the students will get attracted to the board display. Second Visual skills, teachers are somewhat like interior designers; they must be able to visualize the presentation and impact they want to create, and then apply those to the display. Another, being Imaginative, in a way that he may able to look for a unique ways or ideas in order to come up with an effective board display. Also being Open-minded, it is very important that the teacher must be open-minded because every time his students will share ideas he is always ready to listen to it. And lastly he/she must be Artistic so that he/she could come up with an effective board display.

2. Which of the skills do you already have? Recall your past experiences in making board displays. How do you practice these skills?

The skills that I already have are creativity and open-mindedness. I do not have much experience in making board display, the one that I could remember is when I was the Seminary and I was assigned to make an illustration board showing each seminarians id, names and place of origins. In the making, I am just using my own creativity of how to develop a good presentation.

3. Which skills do you still need to develop? Reflect on how you can improve on or acquire these skills.

I feel that I need to develop more in my artistry in coming up with designs in making a good board display and other instructional materials. I can improve on these skills by constant practice and by research on various designs helpful in coming up with instructional materials.

Class Observation Guide

Read the following statements carefully before you observe.

1. What is the lesson about?

2. What visual aids/materials/learning resources is the teacher using?

3. Observe and task notes on how the teacher presents/uses the learning resources.

4. Closely observe the learner’s response to the teacher’s use of learning resources. Listen to their verbal responses. What do their responses indicate? Do their responses show attentiveness, eagerness and understanding?

5. Focus on their non-verbal responses. Are they forward showing their interest on the non-verbal responses? Are they looking toward the direction of the teacher and the materials? Do their actions show attentiveness, eagerness and understanding?

Observation Report

During my visit, the class was having their lecture on different job careers. The teacher used a manila paper and cut classified ads from newspapers. She organizes the cut classified ads in the manila paper in way that it would get the interest of the students. The teacher calls some students to read the cut classified ads in the manila paper and encourage the other students to listen very carefully because they are going to have an activity after. I observed that this strategy is good for student’s participation. It did hold their interest and help them in their analysis.

As I listened to the verbal responses of the pupils, most of them are participating. I think most of them were able to catch up the lesson easily because they have positive responses whenever the teacher asks questions. Most students show eagerness and attentiveness because they were attentive and eager to learn more about the lesson.

As far as I observed their non-verbal responses, I noticed that they were really interested in the class discussions. They listen to the teacher very attentively and show much interest about their class discussion.

pg. 19

Page 18: Episode 1 the School

ANALYSIS

1. What do you think prompted the teacher to choose the materials/learning resources that she/he used?

One thing that prompted the teacher to use the materials in the lesson is appropriateness in fulfilling the lesson objective of the day and the desire that her students will have participation in class discussion.

2. What difficulties, if any, did the teacher experience? How can this be managed?

As what I have observed the teacher, I did not notice that she had any difficulties in presenting her lesson to the students. Maybe because of her long experience in the teaching profession that she was able utilize every teaching aid to its fullest use.

3. Over-all, were the learning resources/materials used effectively? Why? Why not?

Yes, the teaching aid was really effective because it brought attentiveness, eagerness and understanding to the students. Also, it helps the teacher to make the discussion more participative and informative.

REFLECTIONS

Put yourself in the place of the teacher. What would you do similarly and what would you do differently if you will teach the same lesson to the same group of students? Why?

I would probably do the same with or to look for classified ads but this time, with the use of advance educational technology (laptop & projector), I would make a power point presentation. I think this would create more eagerness for the students to learn.

An Observation / Survey Guide

1. Are there learning resources useful for your topic in the resource center you visited?

2. Are the available materials appropriate for your target grade/year level?

3. List down those that can be useful for your topic?

4. What other materials can you make? (like flash cards, posters, cut-outs, transparencies, etc)

OBSERVATION NOTE

Yes, there are learning resources/materials useful for my

topics that are present in the resource center. There are

available materials appropriate for my target grade/year level.

These will surely help and facilitate learning’s to the pupils.

Learning materials useful for my topic are the books, manila

paper, pentel pen, chalks, pictures and charts. The other

materials that I can make are cut-out letters, flash cards and

visual aids.

ANALYSIS

Give at least three benefits of doing a survey of available materials before making your own materials? Explain each.

If I do a survey of available materials before making my own, I can save time – instead of making my own and figuring out how my lesson will proceed, I can just focus on how to use the available materials for the lesson.

Another is I can save money and material resources. Why do I have to spend when there are already appropriate resources available? Obviously, this is very trivial in these times of trying economic times.

Third, I can also find out what other resources are available which can be used in the future lessons. This way I only need to have a yearly inventory and then plan the materials I will use throughout the school year.

REFLECTIONS

1. Which of the materials did you like making the most? Why?

Making Instructional Materials does really excite me because I am confident I can make it more presentable. The materials I like the most is Power point slide because somehow it much advance and does catches the student’s eagerness to learn.

2. What difficulties, if any, did you encounter in making the materials? How did you overcome them?

Making most of these materials on my own would be really difficult but some can be made with the help of professionals who have expertise and the proper equipment. In order to overcome such difficulties, I will just find alternative materials that are readily available and affordable.

3. What tips can you give teachers regarding preparation of teaching materials?

The best tip I can give to teachers regarding preparation of teaching materials is make use of the resources available at home, in the school or can be bought at the convenience store for a low price. They can

pg. 25

Page 24: Episode 1 the School

also search the Internet for creative ways to utilize such commonly found items in their lessons.

Hand-out

Johari Window was named for its creators, Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham, is a useful tool in understanding our own selves which can help us live more effective lives. The four panes of the Johari Window represent the four parts of our Self.

My Public Self  is what I show others about me.

My Blind Spots  are parts of me others see but I do not.

My Hidden Self  is what I choose to hide from others.

My Unconscious Self  are parts of me I do not see nor do others.

REFLECTIONS

1. What difficulties, if any, did you encounter in making the hand-outs? How did you overcome them?

The difficulties I encountered in making the hand-out were the selection of what graphic organizer to be used that is best suited to my topic, as well as, the preparation of the hand-out because it was time-consuming.

2. What tips can you give teachers regarding preparation of hand-outs?

In making handouts, it is always best to start with an outline so that one will be guided on what topics to include. Now, it might be time-consuming to create one’s own illustrations, but then you can always use this illustration for other instructional materials like exams and slide presentations.

1. What are the features of a good slide presentation?

A good slide show presentation is:

Concise direct to the point and insightful Only use necessary or essential information Have transitions and animations to emphasize a point but should

not be too much. If you use effects, transitions and animation try and make them

relevant and consistent Its design, lay-out and formatting should be balanced with the

concept presented.

2. Which of these features are present in the slide presentation you made?

Among the features mentioned above, the slide presentation I made has appropriate transitions and

animations, where the format and design is congruent to the concept presented – it does not clutter the slide.

3. Which features are not present in the slide presentation you made?

Well, I guess all the features I wrote on answer no. 1 are all provided in the presentation that I make.

REFLECTIONS

What difficulties, if any did you encounter in making the slide presentation? How did you overcome them?

In making the slides, so far, the difficulty encountered is choosing the information that should appear on the slide, since there is a lot of information being discussed in the reference materials. To overcome them, I read the summarized form of the lesson and from there come up with an outline that would make the preparation of the slide easier.

REFLECTIONS

Through this episode, I was able to come across the role of the teacher in making a responsible choice in determining the appropriateness of the instructional tools especially when it comes from the World Wide Web. The teacher has to spend time in previewing and evaluating prospect sites to be used in the class. Although, the teacher has all the help he or she will need when looking for materials to use in class because there are a lot of sites that cater to their needs.
