New features of FIU 19E C2.0

1. Processor board:• Processor clock speed increment from 33.4 MHz to 50 MHz to

achieve better performance

2. Ethernet plug in unit support added:• New signals routed to plug in unit slot 2

3. IP DCN Improvements:• AUX FAST data channels can be used for IP DCN traffic (alternative

to HOP LAN data channel). Now IP DCN traffic capacity is 64-512 kbits/s depending of used radio links capacity.

• Hop LAN data channels can be alternatively used to be compatible with FIU 19E C1.5

1. Ethernet Plug-In Unit (=EPIU) technical overview 1/2

• Two 10/100 Base-T Ethernet interfaces (IEEE 802.3) on a single plug-in unit• Full & Half duplex Ethernet interface with auto-negotiation support• Ethernet flow control supported• Standard Ethernet frame support (1518 bytes)• Automatic MDI/MDIX crossover is supported• EPIU can learn up to 2048 MAC addresses

• Plug in unit provides transparent Ethernet bridging over radio hop • Max. packet length is 1536 bytes• Transparent to VLAN tagged Ethernet frames (1522 bytes)• Hop needs to be terminated at both ends of the radio hop with EPIU • EPIU supports up to two radios with Ethernet traffic • Radio path capacity 2-32 Mbit/s for Ethernet traffic, configurable (2Mbit/s granularity)• Remaining radio link capacity may be used for TDM traffic• No PPP support – Ethernet packet traffic is not embedded to E1 signals• Only FIU19E C2.0 supported, earlier FIU19E nor FIU19 can not be upgraded to

support EPIU• Packet buffer size is selectable towards radio link with following options: 32 kbytes, 64

kbytes, and 128 kbytes. In the other direction the buffer size is fixed to 64 kbytes for each port

• Link Loss Forwarding (LLF)

Ethernet Plug-In Unit technical overview 2/2

• There are three operating modes supported by the Ethernet Plug-In Unit

1) Channel separation mode- Ethernet interface 1 is connected to radio link 1 and Ethernet interface 2 is connected

to radio link 22) Full-switch mode

- Traffic from any of the device ports can be forwarded to any output port of the EPIU3) Capacity sharing mode

- It is possible to divide radio link’s Ethernet capacity between those two Ethernet ports to two individual bit pipes so that both of the interfaces have a fixed capacity of the radio link - Capacity can be shared quite freely between these two interfaces (granularity is 1/256 of links Ethernet capacity)

• Performance monitoring• Basic performance statistics via Q1 & Hopper Manager• SNMP statistics: RMON, IF MIB

• Configuration management:• Basic configuration management via Nokia Q1 & Hopper Manager• SNMP configuration management supported for EPIU

• Operation temperature adheres to FIU19E requirements.

• Possibility for remote SW update on the field for EPIU

• EPIU can be used in combination with any 4x2Mbit/s plug in units, also with EXU

4. Two IU protected radio hops

NOTE!

• On FIU19E C2.0 release it is possible to use EPIU on 2*IU configurations

• To connect Ethernet cables from 2*IU master/slave units a ”switch”-functionality

from the LAN is required for the proper LAN connectivity

• Faulty EPIU does NOT cause change over between indoor units

• The change over happens when E1 traffic is not complete on active indoor unit

• Change over between OUs is supported for PDH and Ethernet traffic

• On FIU19E C2.x SW release the active change over from EPIU will be supported

•Initially packet traffic exists only between IU1 and IU3•Active IU fails (IU1), IU switchover happens at near end•IU1 does not send any packets to Ethernet switch anymore•Packets start coming to Ethernet switch through IU2•Ethernet switch learns that packets come only through IU2•Ethernet switch starts transmitting packets to IU2 directly after a timeout. Typically this timeout lasts about 5 minutes (address table ageing time). Typically one Ethernet MAC address exists only behind one port…. It is a special/fault situation if same MAC address can be found behind two ports.

8. Notes & Restrictions• If EPIU is attached to a device that does not support auto-negotiation and that supports either full duplex

10/100 Base-T interface, then one has to configure the respective interface on EPIU to operate in full duplex 10 or full duplex 100 mode. If auto-negotiation is used in this case, it would select a wrong operating mode. This feature is originating from auto-negotiation standard, it is not a SW/HW failure.

• Flow control is a special feature which is not widely used. It should be disabled as default. It can be enabled only when the user really understands the drawbacks and benefits of it. For example TCP/IP networks expect that packets get lost when network is congested. If part of packets are not dropped this will eventually slow down network performance & throughput.

• Flow control has to be enabled on both sides of the Ethernet radio link, it does not work correctly if enabled only on one side. Flow control can be used in all EPIU operating modes (channel separation, capacity sharing, full switch modes). Flow control works only on full duplex link segments.

• Tree and branch network topologies are supported for Ethernet traffic with EPIU. EPIU does not support ring topology as such. Ring topology is supported only if there is a spanning tree capable switch included in the ring so that it disables multiple paths to same destination in single Ethernet network (Ethernet LAN).

• Link Loss Forwarding (LLF) is a special feature it has not yet been widely used in Ethernet networks. When it is used it should be enabled on both sides of Ethernet radio hop. Otherwise link loss information does not pass over the radio link. LLF was originally designed (by Cisco) to be used in load sharing applications where two parallel links are used to give 2X throughput. If one of the links fail, this is detected faster by using LLF. When one link fails its traffic will be directed faster to remaining link.

• Link loss forwarding does not work in full switch mode.• Load sharing: EPIU does not support load sharing as such. External equipment has to be used for doing load

sharing over two (or more) parallel links.• If one uses capacity sharing mode, it has to be used on both sides of the radio hop. Capacity sharing ratio

needs to be same on both sides of the hop. It is preferred to use same FB interface on both sides of the hop when using capacity sharing mode.

• Capacity sharing mode FB1 – FB2 crosses ETH1-ETH2 signals, capacity sharing ratio needs to be mirrored also.• In capacity sharing mode one needs to use two FIU 19E’s to build a repeater station. External Ethernet cables

are needed for looping Ethernet interfaces.

Page 33: EPIU Training Material 0.2e

33 © NOKIA Ethernet Plug-In Unit .PPT / 08-12-2003 / AHi Company Confidential

9. Some bad EPIU configurations

1. Loop in the network, broadcast & unicast traffic will finally block the network

2. Ethernet interface capacity is much smaller than radio links Ethernet capacity. Maximum utilization of half duplex Ethernet segment is usually 30% of links capacity. At 10 Base-T link segment the utilization would be about 3.5 Mbits/s. This is much less than radio links maximum Ethernet capacity. Also note that on half duplex segment only one host can send at a time.

3. Payload Ethernet interface connected to IP DCN interface. IP DCN traffic should be kept separated from Ethernet payload traffic for network security reasons.

Exercise 1: continued..• General description:

• Check that Ethernet radio hop is established correctly, check PDH traffic over the radio link. • Checks that can be done by Hopper Manager to check that Ethernet hop is established correctly:

Check Eth-2 link status LED’s on both sides of the hop, they should be lit Close & reopen EPIU settings menu to check current Ethernet interface mode

What is the current operating mode for Eth-2 on IU1 ________ and IU2 __________ Check alarm window & history, there should be no active alarms. Open Maintenance -> Performance -> Counters for Ethernet 2 interface Clear the performance counters for Ethernet 2 interface, leave window open for later viewing

• Verifying that Ethernet radio hop works correctly: Open a command window on the PC (Start –> run.. : cmd <enter>) Run the following ping command: ping www.connecting.nokia.com Ping should return something like:

H:\>ping www.connecting.nokia.comPinging www3ntc.ntc.nokia.com [172.21.140.34] with 32 bytes of data:Reply from 172.21.140.34: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=250Reply from 172.21.140.34: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=250Reply from 172.21.140.34: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=250Reply from 172.21.140.34: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=250Ping statistics for 172.21.140.34: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms

• Download example: Open Internet explorer Clear internet explorer cache: Tools -> Internet Options… -> (Delete Files + OK) Download a large file from …

• Check that performance counters of Ethernet plug in unit are updated (on IU1) Write down the number of InOctets __________________ and OutOctets ____________________.

• Check that LED is showing link activity on ETH-2 interface during download.

Exercise 2: Full switch mode• General description:

• Use same setup as in exercise 1 with following exceptions• Use full switch mode and enable both Ethernet interfaces on IU1

• Verify that it is possible to connect to LAN through both ports of EPIU on IU1

• Check FIU19E alarm window to see if there are any active alarms, there shouldn’t be any.

• Note: there is an unwanted alarm about unconnected Ethernet cable on IU1. This will probably be fixed in later SW releases.

Exercise 3: Capacity sharing mode• General description:

• Establish a single radio hop with 8x2M capacity• Reserve all of radio links capacity to Ethernet traffic• Set EPIU to capacity sharing mode• Allocate 128 kbits/s for ETH-2 traffic and rest of the capacity is left for Eth-1 interface (16256 kbits/s).

• Make same EPIU Settings for both IU1 and IU2

• Verify that both Ethernet links operate correctly by Checking alarm windows on both IU’s. Pinging www.connecting.nokia.com through both Ethernet interfaces

• Try downloading a large file through Eth-2 from … to check that capacity that is allocated to Eth-2 is really 128 Kbits/s.

Write down downloaded file size: __________ & time for downloading : ________ Note: data that is transferred over radio link is embedded to IP, Ethernet and HDLC frames thus

throughput seems to be lower than expected.

Exercise 4: Test loops• General description:

• Verify that you are able to use EPIU test loops• To be able to do the test with one radio hop, one needs to use capacity sharing mode on both IU1 and IU2. • Test loop settings can be found from Hopper Manager at: Maintenance -> Tests -> Loopbacks

• Configure EPIU’s on both IU1 and IU2 to capacity sharing mode • Enable all interfaces, • Radio link capacity and and capacity sharing ratio can be selected freely

• 1. Make crossed loop on IU1 to interface for Ethernet traffic• Use ping to test that the loop works correctly• Remove loop setting

• 2. Make Crossed far end loop to equipment (loop at IU2), configure the loop via IU1• Use ping to test that the loop works correctly• Remove loop settings, or wait until loop setting times out

• Note: non crossed loops cannot be used for debugging unless you have Smartbits test equipment

Exercise 5: Misc Items• Link Loss forwarding

• Familiarize with EPIU statistics window, check all 4 ports of EPIU

• Familiarize with EPIU SW download window• Try changing EPIU SW and activate new SW to see LED behaviour and 20 s startup time after download

• Auto-negotiation features:• Suppose attached device only supports Full Duplex 100 Base-T and it does not advertise its links

capability via auto-negotiation. In this case the use has to configure EPIU interface to work in FD 100 mode.

• Same stuff applies to 10 FD, one has to configure EPIU to 10 FD mode.

• Setting EPIU BER limits + disabling SIO traffic

• EPIU related alarms
