Effective Discipline

“Enforced rules can make the difference between law

and order for all and the reign of terror that exists in many schools. If rules vary from one teacher or one setting to another, the students can, with some justification, challenge them. Variations provide an alibi for rule infringements. Consistent enforcement of the code of conduct requires active vigilant supervision and is one of the most effective and economical prevention strategies.”

Schools where Everyone Belongs

Focus on Prevention

• Discipline isn’t what you do when students misbehave; it is what you do so they won’t.

• Rules and limits are established so students will understand that some behaviours are strictly out-of-bounds.

• Revisions and improvements must constantly be made in response to changes in student behaviours and needs.

Our visibility will improve the behaviours of the

students. This will take some time.

CONSISTENCY, however, will ensure and bring

about success.

Climate ChangeResearch suggests that it takes

approximately three years to change the culture of a school,

so be prepared to maintain your efforts.

Eventually, most students will stop pushing the limits and

realize that certain behaviours are simply not acceptable at

school.
