by them were given the name Megger. OnMay 25, 1903, the company registered theword Megger as trademark number 254820in the UK. It has since been registered inalmost every country.

The exact date the word Megger wasfirst used is not known, but it is believedVignoles devised it. Some sources suggestthat it is a contraction of the wordsMEGohm and metER, with the additionof a G, while others suggest that the orig-inal words were MEGohm and testER. Ei-ther way, the result is one of thebest-known and respected trademarks inthe electrical industry worldwide.

On Washington’s birthday in 1895, whileEvershed and Vignoles was being set up inEngland, James G. Biddle started his ownbusiness in Philadelphia. He acted as a man-ufacturers agent, arranging to import andsell scientific and electrical equipment madeby overseas manufacturers.

In 1910, Dr. Rowland, Electrical De-partment head at Philadelphia’s Drexel In-stitute told Biddle about a device formeasuring insulation resistance that wasmanufactured in England by Evershed &Vignoles, and that this company was, withthe aid of the British Consul in Philadel-phia, looking for US representation.

Biddle traveled to England and, with ahandshake, concluded a deal with Evershed& Vignoles, which made his company thesole distributor in the US for all Evershed &Vignoles test equipment, which includedMegger insulation testers, earth testers andDucter low-resistance ohmmeters.

Initially, Biddle orderedfive Megger insulationtesters, which he sent out onconsignment to his close en-gineering acquaintances andpublic utility companies.Four out of five recipients de-cided to buy the instrumentthey had been sent. The suc-cess of the products helpedBiddle to expand his opera-tions. In 1936, the businesswas incorporated as theJames G. Biddle Company.

Biddle retired in 1940, andin 1945 was appointedChairman of the Board. Dur-

ing World War II, because of the diffi-culty of obtaining equipment fromEngland, Biddle started its own manufac-turing operation for Megger insulationtesters in the US.

After several ownership changes, Ever-shed and Vignoles joined forces withAVO Limited, the company that devel-oped the world’s first multimeter, to formMegger Instruments. In 1991, Biddle andMegger, along with Multi-Amp, came to-gether to form the organization thenknown as AVO Megger Instruments.

Today, the organization is known asMegger Group Limited. With develop-ment and manufacturing facilities in theUS, the UK and Sweden it is, and has beenfor more than 100 years, a world leader inthe electrical test equipment field.

The Megger name is so well known thatit is incorrectly used as a verb that means“to perform an insulation test.” Megger re-mains a registered trademark and MeggerGroup rigorously defends and takes allnecessary steps to address improper usagethat come to its attention. ❏

For over a century, Megger hasbeen synonymous with quality andreliability in portable electrical test

equipment. But where did the famous Meg-ger name, a guarded trademark of MeggerGroup Limited, come from?

Back in 1888, electric lighting wasgrowing in popularity. Sidney Evershedwas working for Goolden & Trotter, acompany with a department that special-ized in domestic installa-tions. To verify the safety ofthose installations, a methodof testing insulation wasneeded. At that time, insula-tion resistance could only bemeasured in a laboratory, and the measurements werecarried out at low voltages, typically around 2 V.

Evershed knew from re-search that testing at such lowvoltages gave unsatisfactoryresults, and to ensure thesafety of an installation, it wasessential to test the insulationat its working voltage orhigher. He also knew that the laboratorytechniques for measuring insulation resis-tance were unsuitable for use on site.

His response was to develop the first di-rect-reading ohmmeter, which comprised asmall permanent magnet suspended at thecenter of, and controlled by two coils atright angles to each other. One coil wasconnected directly to the voltage source en-ergizing the ohmmeter; the other was con-nected to the same voltage source via theinsulation under test. This meant that theresults obtained were independent of thevoltage.

Evershed energized his ohmmeter witha hand-cranked generator, similar to thetype in use at the time for ringing tele-phones. The instrument proved so success-ful that Evershed patented it, and Goolden& Trotter started to manufacture and marketit in 1889.

In 1895, Sidney Evershed and Ernest Vi-gnoles, another Goolden & Trotter director, purchased the company’s instrument de-partment and set it up as Evershed & Vig-noles Limited. The insulation testers made

built-in infrared technology. Several newenhancement addresses safety issues:placing non-contact voltage (NCV) de-tectors right into the meter lets the userquickly check for the presence of volt-age before proceeding to a contact test.CAT IV ratings permit users to use Ex-tech’s outdoor near mains lines.

Wireless datalogging versatility isavailable on our Extech EX540 DMM.Now, electrical professionals can trans-mit readings safely up to 30 feet away.

Clamp Meters A favorite for plant maintenance pro-

fessionals, the clamp meter is used tomeasure electrical current flow to a de-vice with the advantage of not having toshut down the piece of equipment beingtested. A motor drawing excessive cur-rent is operating inefficiently, heatingup, and subject to premature wear orfailure. As with the multimeter, we havesought to add useful features to theclamp meter. A true innovation can befound with the addition of the infraredthermometer into the clamp.

This unique function lets a user scanan electrical panel for the hot spots thatindicate a bad or failing connection.NCV detectors and CAT IV-ratedclamps also enhance user safety.

Introducing METERLiNK METERLiNK is an exclusive new

technology that wirelessly connectsFLIR infrared cameras to Extech metersvia Bluetooth to accelerate and simplifyinspections. During infrared inspectionsof electrical components, users cantransmit key electrical readings such ascurrent or voltage from an ExtechEX845 clamp meter directly to a FLIRinfrared camera.

METERLiNK instantly imprints theelectrical readings onto a related infraredimage not only adding time-savings, but

also ensuring accurate, coordinated doc-umentation for PdM inspection reports.

Infrared Cameras IR cameras detect what no eyes can

see— minor variations in temperaturethat can signal electrical or moistureproblems. Infrared inspection with anExtech thermal imaging camera givesyou the most powerful non-invasivemonitoring and diagnosing tool. Detecthot spots, avoid electrical and mechani-cal failures, and locate HVAC balancingproblems. Results can be captured in-stantly and outputted as professional re-ports providing documented proof ofyour findings.

Wireless Borescope / Video Inspection Cameras

Installation, inspection and diagnosticjobs often require access to hard-to-reach or -see areas. Professionals froma wide range of industries are using Ex-tech’s wireless video inspectionborescope cameras to access tight spotswith the added capability to record 2 GBof video or capture JPEG images. Theaffordable BR200 and BR250 are in-valuable for simplifying diagnostics anddocumenting inspections.

Unlike other video borescopes on themarket, the BR200/250 expand their ver-satility with a detachable 3.5” color dis-play. Now, users can position theborescope as needed to access a difficultlocation without losing sight of the dis-play. The monitor can be handheld andkept in direct view or affixed to anymetallic surface using its magnet mount.Alternatively, for inspection sites nearhazardous or moving components, takethe wireless monitor and inspect condi-tions remotely from over 30ft (10m)away.

Unrivaled VersatilityExtech’s product portfolio also in-

cludes power quality analyzers, harmon-ics/leakage testers, phase rotation (rotaryfield) testers, ground resistance testers, insulation testers (megohmeters), mil-liohmeters, oscilloscopes, tachometers, and force/vibration meters.

Extech meters are available world-wide through leading distributors. Learnmore about Extech testers and meters atExtech.com. ❏

ter price. In fact, about 35% of their salesare now to distributors who call them in-stead of the factory because they knowthat Northwest Lighting has it in stock.

In 1999 Jim Miller passed away andthe company was bought by two of hislong-time employees, John Hannaschand Kevin Eagan. They quickly ex-panded the company by opening a SalesOffice and Warehouse in New Hamp-shire as well as a warehouse in Texas.Future expansion plans call for stockinglocations on the west coast and the

southeast. Their goal is to provide one-stop shopping for lighting replacementparts and fixtures and to deliver withintwo business days.

John and Kevin have also expanded theproduct offering tremendously. Theycarry several lines of electronic fluores-cent ballasts, plastic sign ballasts, F-Can,Post-line and Compact Fluorescent Bal-lasts as well as HID, Fluorescent andCompact Fluorescent lamps.

Many customers now want to buy thespecific hid components that they need in-stead of the entire ballast kit. NorthwestLighting now offers ignitors, capacitors, lampholders, mini fuses and other re-placement components and stocks themin large quantity.

Northwest Lighting has recently intro-duced a fluorescent highbay fixture thatis extremely contractor-friendly. It fea-tures ballast access doors on the top so anelectrician does not have to remove thereflector or ballast cover to access the bal-last. It is available with F32T8 orF54T5HO lamps and comes in 4 lamp and6 lamp models. These are in stock for im-mediate delivery. Assistance in usingthese products for utility rebates is avail-able by calling our headquarters office.

Northwest Lighting also specializes insourcing hard-to-find lamps and ballasts. Our numerous contacts throughout thelighting industry allow us to find that dif-ficult part in less time than it would takefor you to search for it. Call them withyour next sourcing challenge and saveyourself the headaches.

This year Northwest Lighting’s NewHampshire office has opened an OutletStore to market energy efficient lightingproducts for home and office use. Theyoffer commercial grade compact fluores-cent lamps in a much wider variety ofstyles and color temperatures that the bigretail chains. They also offer energy effi-cient alternatives to the high wattage fix-tures and lamps used at home or in theoffice. Future plans call for additionalOutlet Stores in select markets nationally.Later in the year there will be on-line or-dering available for the Outlet Store.

Jim Miller’s bright idea for selling afew HID Ballast Kits has grown tremen-dously since 1991. Lighting is their onlybusiness and they are very good at it. To-day they get more new customers via re-ferrals than from all of their advertisingprograms combined. ❏

Northwest Lighting Systems Co.was created in 1991 in GoldenValley, MN by James D. Miller.

Jim was a Chicago Lighting Rep who in-vested in a small HID ballast manufac-turing company. He was searching for ameans to break into the aftermarket forHID Ballast Replacement Kits and wasfrustrated by the traditional ElectricalDistributor Network that was dominatedby the major manufacturers. He sawhow successful the “Direct to Contrac-tor” model was for some fixture manu-facturers. Why not give it a try withcomponents? Thus, Northwest Lightingwas born.

For seventeen years, Northwest Light-ing has provided HID Ballast Replace-ment Kits directly to contractors, propertymanagers and select national accounts atsignificant saving over the local electricalsupply house. Their large stock of bothhigh volume and low volume models re-sults in 95% of all orders shipping thesame day. Contractors have come to real-ize that waiting for their local distributorto bring in a 480v ballast or a postline bal-last from the factory makes no sense whenNorthwest Lighting has it in stock at a bet-

The old saying, “necessity is themother of all inventions” holds truefor Conduit Repair Systems, Inc.

Our split conduit products were originallydesigned and developed by a cable TVtechnician and his father in-law thatworked as an engineer. The technicianfound that he needed a repair product thattruly restored damaged PVC pipe to itsoriginal state. The technician did some re-search and found that what he needed did-n’t exist at the time. The two men thendeveloped our patented snap together splitconduit products. Since the early days ofthe company, many additional applicationsfor the products have since been discov-ered including enclosing exposed cables, relocating aerial lines to underground, en-closing cables on bridges, protecting cableson telephone poles, enclosing fiber optics, and relocating cables along roads.

Conduit Repair Systems, Inc. formallybegan business operations in 1995 and hasseen exponential growth ever since. Our

type – a 5000º Kelvin extra long life 4’ T8.Fixture types, reflectors and ballasts werecarefully specified to deliver appropriatelighting levels for different areas and tasks. The overall connected load was reduced.

The upgraded fluorescent lighting pro-vides better color rendition, less shadow-ing and less glare than the old lighting.Additionally, lumen maintenance is betterand building maintenance is easier. Boththe new lighting and the controls havebeen overwhelm ingly embraced by em-ployees, who now feel far more comfort-able working in the space.

Integrating Controls WattStopper line voltage passive in-

frared (PIR) HB occupancy sensors con-trol individual six-lamp high bay fixturesin the warehouse rack aisles. The PIR cov-erage, using aisleway lenses, ensures thatlighting turns on in each section of theaisle as a worker approaches. Lighting inmany rack aisles remains off for much ofthe day.

HB sensors also control approximatelyhalf of the fixtures in high-ceilinged pack-ing areas and in the main aisles, which ex-perience high levels of forklift traffic. Therest of the fixtures remain on during work-ing hours. Keeping sufficient lighting onthroughout the space helps workers feelsecure and comfortable in the large ware-house space.

Previously overlit under-mezzaninespaces were efficiently retrofit, and a num-ber of these spaces were rewired to createsmall zones of task lighting. Now, ap-proximately half the fixtures remain on toprovide illumination for workers walkingthrough the areas. Workers can turn on theadditional lighting in each zone as needed, using a conveniently located TS digitaltime switch. Lights turn off automaticallyfollowing the user-selected time period.

Bi-level lighting in private offices iscontrolled by DW dual technology, dualrelay wall switch sensors. Dual technol-ogy was selected to best detect small mo-tion. The first lighting level (66%) is

switched on automati cally upon occu-pancy. The second level (33%) may beswitched manually. In practice the secondlevel is seldom used, contributing to en-ergy savings.

Controls in other areas were selected tosuit the unique needs of each space. UTultrasonic sensors, which can sense aroundpartitions, control open office spaces, lunch and break rooms. A time clock con-trols energy-efficient lighting in a securestorage area, providing significant savingscompared to previous 24/7 operation ofolder generation T8 fixtures. A low volt-age digital time switch is available for af-ter hours override.

Resulting Energy SavingsKaiser Permanente’s Marvin Cave, Fa-

cility Manager, Regional Building Opera-tions, NCAL, notes, “The lighting upgradehas improved the quality of lighting inboth the office area and warehouse, andsaved a significant amount of energy andutility costs.”

Analysis of utility records shows a re-duction in energy use, measured in kilo-watt hours, of over 40% for the 12 monthperiod following installation. The energysavings will pay back the cost of the up-grade in three years, net of a $71,000 Pa-cific Gas and Electric rebate.

Selecting the Controls Kaiser Permanente managers selected

the winning lineup of design, projectmanagement and lighting and controltechnology based on positive prior expe-rience. The company in 2003 imple-mented a lighting upgrade with controlsat another warehouse facility, using thesame team, and that installation contin-ues to perform successfully. ❏

26 Electrical Products & Solutions • April 2010

Managers of a 350,000 squarefoot Kaiser Permanente distribu-tion warehouse in Northern Cali-

fornia were dissatisfied with the facility’slighting. Task illumination was ineffective, maintenance was difficult, and energy usewas high. To improve the situation, theydecided to completely retrofit the lightingand add energy saving controls.

Robert Ofsevit, vice president of Con-cord, California-based Alamo Lighting, coordinated a turnkey upgrade, includingover 400 WattStopper occupancy sensorsand time switches. More than a year aftercompletion, Ofsevit’s design is exceedingexpecta tions for performance and energysavings.

Warehouse LightingPrior to the upgrade, much of the light-

ing remained on close to 24 hours a dayfrom Sunday night through Friday after-noon. The space was lit with metal halide, high pressure sodium and older fluores-cent sources. Light distribution was poor:illumination levels were insufficient formany tasks, but were far too high in someareas.

Before developing a lighting and con-trol plan, Ofsevit assessed the safety re-quirements of the facility, as well as thetasks being performed. The new controlsensure that lights in many areas are notturned on until they are needed, and areturned off after they are no longer needed.

monitor. This monitor was primarily de-signed to reduce maintenance hours andreplace inexperienced maintenance per-sonnel. Since those early days, muchmore has been learned about why andhow batteries fail, and a whole new setof battery problems has arrived with theintroduction of VRLA (Valve RegulatedLead Acid) batteries.

Batteries are the weakest link in thebackup power chain and can failabruptly and without warning. Today, ithas become obvious to users that batteryperformance cannot be taken forgranted. The cost of failures makes thecost of monitoring relatively insignifi-cant, especially in large data center ap-plications where even a momentarycomputer power glitch can result inmany millions of dollars in losses.

In the early 90’s, Albér began re-search and development of a noninva-sive, online method to test batteries.Built-in proactive testing to provideearly warning of developing problemswould give the user adequate time toperform corrective action. As a result ofthe many years of battery testing and theknowledge gained from these tests, Al-bér developed a State of Health methodfor predicting battery failures. Albérpatented this innovative approach, known as DC resistance testing. This

measurement, recognized by both thebattery manufacturers and the IEEE, wasfirst released in the Albér portable Cell-corder product and was later integratedinto their battery monitoring products.

For a monitor to achieve its main ob-jectives, it must, as a minimum, moni-tor the following parameters:• Overall string voltage. Verify the

charger has been set correctly and isoperating properly.

• Cell voltages. Verify all cells arecharging correctly.

• Ambient temperature. Verify the tem-perature environment is at or near op-timum temperature for long life andmaximum capacity.

• Internal cell resistance. Verify thestate of health by identifying high re-sistance / low capacity cells.

• Intercell & Intertier resistance. Checkthe conduction path integrity andavoid possible fires and abrupt shut-downs.

• Load cycles. Check the number anddepth of discharges. This informationis used to project battery life and settlewarranty issues.

• Real time data capture/display. Havethe capability of watching how yourindividual cells perform during a dis-charge test.

Albér is the only company today witha true, full functioning monitor that per-forms and monitors all of these key pa-rameters. The company’s success isbuilt on these capabilities, their patentedtechnology, and an unwavering focus oncustomer service. A testimony to thissuccess is their customer base, whichreaches worldwide across all industriesand includes the major data and finan-cial centers, critical government facili-ties, telecommunications, nuclear, andutilities sites.

Albér is committed to educating andsupporting the industry. Throughout theyear, they conduct noncommercial bat-tery seminars nationwide and also spon-sor BATTCON - the largest annualstationary battery conference in theworld. Expert knowledge, objectiveproblem solving, development of tech-nology to meet specific user needs, and astandard of excellence have earned Al-bér respect throughout the standby bat-tery industry. ❏

Albér is the oldest and the largestmanufacturer of battery test andmonitoring equipment for the

standby battery market. Established in1972, the father and son team of Carl andGlenn Albér focused on designing and de-veloping test equipment geared to meetthe customer’s specific needs.

The initial product released by Albérwas the digital micro-ohmmeter in 1973.The first of its kind on the market, it wasused to test everything from transform-ers to battery intercell connections. Thenext product offering by Albér was de-signed to meet a new requirement in thenuclear industry. In 1975, they intro-duced the battery capacity test system, the first programmable battery load testto profile the actual load of batteries. The capacity test is recognized by bothbattery manufacturers and the IEEE asthe only proven method to determine thebattery’s actual capacity. Today, the Al-bér BCT and DC load bank systems arethe standard among nuclear facilities inthe US.

Our Ground Tester line finds its roots inthe early 1930s. A null balance gal-vanometer, a decade resistance box and aDC power source combined to make one ofthe first ground testers on the market. Over19 years ago, AEMC revolutionized theground testing market by offering clamp-on ground resistance testers, eliminating theneed to disconnect the system to test it andeliminating the need for auxiliary rods todo the test. Several generations of im-provements and additional features hasstrengthened AEMC’s position as the in-dustry standard and leader in clamp-onground resistance testers. We again led theway in fall-of-potential ground testing withthe introduction of an automatic tester in2006 that automatically locked onto the op-timum frequency to test at and calculatedall test results for soil resistivity, ground re-sistance earth coupling and bond resistance,as well as, stored the test data and gener-ated computer reports including fall-of-po-tential plots. Our latest introduction, a towertest system, again is an innovative designproviding the ability to test tower groundingsystems with out de-energizing them or re-moving the overhead ground conductor, saving considerable time and money andimproving operator safety.

AEMC’s line of current probes has long

been the standard for Power Quality analy-sis with the world leaders in power qualityinstruments standardizing on these probesfor their current measurement source. Wealso manufacture and sell a wide varietyof Power and Power Quality measuring in-struments ranging from clamp-on metersto single and three-phase power quality an-alyzers and digital power meters.

AEMC’S DataView® software de-signed to configure instruments, run tests, download and store results and generatefinal reports was added to the product of-fering in late 1990s. Today DataView® iscompatible with Megohmmeters, GroundResistance Testers, Micro-Ohmmeters,Power Quality Analyzers, Data Loggersand multi-meters, thus offering the user astandard for interface and control to all it’sproducts eliminating the need to learn newsoftware every time.

In addition to its product offering AEMCoffers one day accredited courses in groundresistance testing, insulation resistance test-ing and power quality analysis.

All Access Pass (May 17-22), for access to all ASES SOLAR2010 events and admittance to the SOLAR 2010 exhibit hall. In-cludes four full days of Solar Success! training, either Solar Suc-cess! for Start-ups or Solar Success! Pro-Track.

Solar Success! registrants gain access to both Conergy’s open-ing night reception and SMA’s networking reception to talk shopwith conference hosts, presenters, sponsors and fellow attendees. Also included is an opportunity to network while watching theArizona Diamondbacks take on the San Francisco Giants.

The construction industry has been heavily affected by the cur-rent economic downturn, while solar is growing at a clip of over30% per year — and it is projected to sustain that growth over thenext few years. Industry growth means immense promise for thoselooking to diversify and build their businesses – or parlay their ex-pertise into rewarding career opportunities.

Safier says Conergy has supersized this year’s Pro-Track ses-sions to help the most experienced installers keep pace with grow-ing project sizes: “The technical program is suited to those workingin grid-tie and battery-based residential markets who intend to en-ter the small-commercial (10 kW-1 MW) market – and to com-mercial-only contractors wanting a solar market overview and howto make a compelling financial case for solar and create winningresidential and commercial project proposals.”

Field electrician-turned-solar-installer Phil Undercuffler, whonow serves as a Product Manager for Conergy, puts it this way, “Ahandful of years ago it was rare for most installers to participate ina 100kW solar energy system. It was for some a once in a life op-portunity,” he said. “The growth we’re now seeing in terms ofsystem size is encouraging,” he noted. “These systems need to beinstalled by somebody. It is the smart contractor who fine-tunes hisknowledge and capabilities with training such as this who is goingto be better equipped to win that business,” Undercuffler said.

Last year, 100% of those who completed an exit surveyagreed the training was time and money well spent; 94% of themore than 590 in attendance said the event was of “excellent” or“above average” value and quality in comparison to other train-ing events. And 98% agreed Solar Success! training providedvaluable information that will help their solar businesses.

Solar Success! is co-located with SOLAR 2010, ASES’ an-nual conference and trade show, now in its 39th year. Aftertraining, participants have access to the entire SOLAR 2010trade show floor to take deeper dives into key subject matterwith manufacturers, installers, researchers, scientists, engineers, investors, analysts, educators and public officials.

With enticing federal tax credits, billions of dollars in grantsand loans, state-funded cash rebates, renewable energy portfoliostandards and a groundswell of consumer support for sustainablesolutions that promote energy independence, the economics of

renewable energy have never been more compelling. As ASESSOLAR 2010 Conference Director Becky Campbell-Howe isprone to say, “Solar energy is not just good for the environment,it’s a job-creating, business-building, revenue-generating revo-lution whose time has come.”
