April brings Mothers day and Easter
and of course the Royal Wedding on Friday 29th April. I must admit this is my favourite time of year. Not just for the chocolate eggs but it is a feel
good month. The clocks have gone forward bringing lighter evenings; the spring flowers are in abundance; everything just seems so much better after the long
Winter! On saying that i have just heard the dreadful news in Japan; we are so lucky in this country not to suffer such natural disasters!
There will be Royal Wedding Celebrations at 4pm at the Stephen Jones Community Hall on Friday 29th April. Everyone is welcome and there will be a prize
for the best decorated hat! I am hoping for some fantastic photographs! If anyone else is having their own celebrations for Kate and William‘s big day,
please send some photographs so you can be included in your local Arrow! Please email me by the 6th May. For all your party needs and Royal Bunting,
Bobbing For Apples now have everything in
stock you need, contact 01427 875871 for more details.
The deadline for May issue is early; Thursday 7th April. Keep sending your articles and if you
would like to advertise your business give me a call.
The Arrow is delivered FREE to every home and business in the local area. If anyone knows
anyone who does not receive it, please contact me; it is important the Arrow is delivered to you!
Best Wishes and enjoy the read.

The Watoto Children's Choir
On Saturday, 9th April at 3pm St Nicholas Church,
Haxey, will be hosting a concert by the Watoto
Children's Choir from Uganda. This is an amazing
choir made up of children of all ages, from 5yrs up
to 16yrs and with several adults too. They have
visited the Isle twice before, performing in All
Saints' Church, Belton as well as in Belton Primary
and South Axholme schools.
Entrance is free but there will be an opportunity
during the concert to give money to support the
work of Watoto Child Care as they rescue
children and enable them to have a family, an

Epworth Imperial Hall welcomes
the Isle District Choral Society.
Thanks to funding of £11,800 from the North
Lincolnshire RDPE (Rural Development
Programme for England) LEADER programme, the
Imperial Hall has just completed part of its major
refurbishment programme.
To celebrate this we are hosting a grand fund
raising coffee morning for the Isle Choral Society
on Saturday 9 April, 10.00 - 12.00 am. This is an
ideal opportunity to look round the hall, see the
improvements, learn what it has to offer individuals
and groups, as well as to support such a worthy
cause as the Choral Society.

Approximately 30 members of
Epworth and District Flower Club
enjoyed celebrating the Club's
50th Birthday with a party in the Memorial
Hall, Haxey. Elaine Hall as retiring President,
welcomed everyone to a hall decorated with a
golden daffodil theme. Sadly there were a few
apologies for ill health, including that of Carolyn
Drury who will take over leading the Group.
Elaine was then thanked verbally for her long term
support and given an arrangement of flowers and a
beautiful book with a dedication in the front
thanking her for her hard work. Much of the drive
to reach the 50years has come from Elaine.
Next the Group enjoyed a meal provided by
Sandra Bishop and instead of dessert all enjoyed a
beautifully decorated fruit cake. This was made by
a Club member, Val Needham. The next part of
the evening was a demonstration by Di Smith, an
area demonstrator from the Lincolnshire Wolds.
Her theme for the evening was 50 Glorious Years.
Di entertained the ladies with arrangements
depicting ice cream cones, cocktail drinks, wedding
celebrations, musical events and general wonderful
table decorations. She combined golden roses with
chrysanthamums and carnations and contrasted
very pretty, dainty purple orchids and also purple
statis. There was almost general discussion about
the devastating effects of the severe winter on
much foliage. Finally Di was thanked by Janet
Oliver and 13 arrangements were won by lucky
raffle ticket holders.
The next meeting will be held on Monday,11th
April in the Stephen Jones Hall in Haxey at
7.30p.p.m. As usual new members and visitors will
be welcome. Information can be obtained from

Do you know that you have an O.M.O. when you retire?
Today in the UK the above is an abbreviation for Open Market Option; this is the option at your selected retirement
age to transfer your pension fund to any other provider who will give you a better rate or better options than your
existing Scheme, free of any penalties.
The options available are many, including Annuity Purchase which can be guaranteed or Investment Linked, they can
also index or remain level, pay a proportion to a surviving partner, there are temporary annuities, and Income
Drawdown Plans, where the fund remains invested and you then take an income from it.
In addition if your health or lifestyle (smoking, drinking, obesity) is expected to lead to a reduced life expectancy, you
could qualify for an ‗enhanced‘ annuity, which provides a higher rate of income compared to a standard annuity. This is
because an enhanced annuity is based on your personal circumstances, rather than just an average for your gender and
age group.
Estimates suggest that up to 40% of the retiring population are eligible for an enhanced annuity yet, in the first quarter
of 2009, only 10% of retirees were actually taking advantage of this. Enhanced retirement annuities are designed
specifically for this 40% group; providers are able to underwrite each case individually to offer the best income rate
possible. (Source of information ABI 2009).
In our experience the above can be quite a daunting process to people retiring. I think you will agree Faced with new
adventures and directions, retirement can be both an exciting and anxious time. There are many important issues to
consider and one of these is undoubtedly 'how do I make the most of my carefully built up pension fund?'
That is where we come in, as Independent Financial Advisers (IFA‘s) we can search the whole market place to find the
best retirement income for your specific needs. We will also assist in the completion of those Tax Returns that you
get at retirement.
Finally as the above suggests we believe using an Independent Financial Adviser at this time makes sense, we are
therefore without any obligation offering you the First Appointment Free for you to make your own mind up
regarding using our services, and assure you the only decision you will have to make on the day is the choice of Coffee
or Tea.

The priorities for Axholme Central are as follows:-
Burglaries in Belton
There has been a shape increase in burglaries in the Belton area, with a
shift from commercial properties to domestic outbuildings being the
main interest for thieves.
Both neighbourhood and response officers patrol the area; however we
actively encourage residents to be particularly vigilant and to report any
suspicious persons in the area. Please review your home security and
that of any garages and sheds on your land. Place high value items like
bicycles and gardening equipment out of sight, and mark your property
so that it is easily identifiable. Keep locks in good working order and keys hidden from view. There are
Neighbourhood Watch schemes running in parts of Belton and anyone wishing to start their own group
please contact the Neighbourhood Team. This is easy to do and is an invaluable tool in fighting crime.
UPDATE- The amount of burglaries reported has abated somewhat, although the neighbourhood team
wish to monitor the situation before closing this priority. We remind residents to be vigilant and report all
suspicious activities and attempts made to gain entry to premises.
Annoyance caused to residents – Fieldside/Battle Green/ Studcross areas in Epworth.
Our attention has been drawn towards a number of youths causing annoyance around the above areas.
This has involved general verbal abuse, litter and minor damages.
We appeal to residents to call in should they witness such behaviour, drawing their attention to the fact
that we need detailed descriptions of offenders as this gives us a better chance of ‗getting the right person‘
when we stop large groups of youths around the village.
A number of parked cars have been targeted. We advise those with vehicles if possible to park them in a
garage if they have one, on the driveway and if possible off the road.
Wildlife Crime.
Wildlife crime is of concern to farmers and landowners on the Isle of Axholme. It is important that every
effort is made to reduce the opportunity for this type of crime to occur and to bring offenders to justice.
The Neighbourhood team together with their uniformed colleagues recognise the importance of creating
secure environments for farmers and landowners on the Isle of Axholme. There is a Farm Watch/
Country Watch scheme running and together we are actively seeking ways to resolve this issue. This is a
continuing concern in the area, and there have been a number of positive responses from the Police in the
South and Central wards. A number of persons have been identified as being connected to some of these
incidents and have been reported for their involvement. This situation will continue to be monitored and
positive action will be taken.
UPDATE: a number of persons have been summonsed to court for hare-coursing/poaching.
We encourage the local communities continued support in reporting such activities in order
to secure convictions and send out the message that this crime will not be tolerated by the
rural community.
Burglar caught = Four youths were recently arrested for burglary after an incident was reported in
Epworth. After interview an 18 year old male was cautioned. Males summonsed = Police received a
report that two vehicles had been damaged. Suspects have been located, interviewed and have been sum-
monsed to attend court. Criminal Damage to Property in Epworth = Three persons were arrested
and interviewed regarding criminal damage to a dwelling in Epworth. One male has been charged with
criminal damage and is currently in the judicial system, whilst the other two males had no further
actions following a review of the evidence. Male arrested after repeatedly attending a shop in
Belton to steal = A male who kept returning and stealing alcohol from a shop in Belton has been ar-
rested and awaits the outcome. Male arrested in Epworth = A local man from the Epworth area who
breached his bail conditions was arrested in the High Street in Epworth and taken to appear at Court.
Drugs Warrant = Neighbourhood officers together with the Divisional Operations Support unit exe-
cuted a warrant under the Misuse of Drugs Act which had been obtained through Scunthorpe Magistrates
Court, in the Belton area on Friday 11th February. No drugs were located.

Women’s Institute (WI) Report February
and March meetings The meeting held on 8th February was the annual
general meeting. A vote of thanks and a bouquet
were given to out retiring president, Mrs Marion
Beecroft, who has done a sterling job for the last
three years. The new president was elected, Mrs
Gillian Bradley, who quite diffidently said she would
do the best she could as president. We are all
looking forward to her term of office. The other
offices of secretary and treasurer remain with the
same people, who both expressed their willingness
to continue, so Ann Frith remains secretary, and
Lynn Seddons remains as treasurer. Both were
thanked for all the work they have done so far.
The evening ended with a tasting session of sa-
voury and dessert recipes which were made by
various members. I have to say at this point that
we have some talented cooks, and a WI recipe
book with out favourite recipes just might be made
and sold for charity. Watch this space!!!
The meeting held on 8th March was slightly shorter
than normal as the speaker had cancelled at the
last minute so a replacement had not been able to
be found. The time was taken up with business
matters and much discussion of the way forward
for the group. The Isle heats of the quiz had taken
place on Tuesday 22nd of February, in which we
were placed second, but will be representing the
Isle and Epworth and District WI in the finals on
25th of March. Our group will be providing flower
arrangements for the speakers table at the annual
Federation Day on 30th of March, and the models
for the fashion show on the 22nd of March. Hope-
fully we‘ll have some pictures for you in the next
issue.
The next meeting will be held at 7-45 in the Red
Lion, Epworth on the 12th of April.

Year 5 Trip to Hathersage
A group of 34 Year 5 children with four
members of staff have just returned
from a week‘s stay at the St. Michael‘s
Environmental Education centre in Hath-
ersage. The children had a great time
learning about the environment and to
work together while away from home.
Activities completed included walks,
Orienteering, Woodland Conservation,
a visit to Castleton, Night Walks and a
Search and Rescue simulation.
The children assisted serving meals and
clearing up and on the last night we all
went out to the Local Pool Cafe for a
tasty dinner before holding our own
talent show.
World Book Day
We again took part in World Book Day
by again dressing up as a character from
a book the class had been studying in
Literacy lessons.
Class 1 and Class 2 had a Pirate Theme
Day and even had a pirate ship in class
for the children to role play.
Class 3 and Class 4 turned their class-
rooms into the Isle of Struay!! Children
and staff dressed up as characters from
the story Katie Morag.
Class 5 explored the Jolly Postman story
and children came dressed as characters
from the book.
Class 6 immersed themselves in the
works of the author Dick King Smith
and came dressed as animals from his books.
Classes 7, 8 and Class 9 explored more literature from the Caribbean. Children choose any of the coun-
tries from the Caribbean and came dressed in the colours shown on the country‘s flag.
Over the day the children took part in lots of activities around books and the staff read extracts from
their favourite book in assembly on Thursday morning.
Wake Up Shake Up Winners
Congratulations to the Year 6 girls who won the Wake Up Shake Up Street Dance competition last
month beating several other Isle schools. The children performed Firework by Katie Perry. The children
will now go onto the Scunthorpe Final on 18th March. The children were all a credit to the school, par-
ticularly as your excellent behaviour was commented on by several people at the event.
Also well done to the group from class 4 who performed Pokerface by Lady Gaga in the Infant competi-
tion. They didn‘t win but performed very well and Bethany Price received a special award from the judges
for making a very good effort.
With best wishes
John Hodgkins Headteacher

ST ANDREWS PARISH CHURCH – EPWORTH
The parish church is a collection of architectural building periods extending from the 12th century. The remnants of the Early English Period of architecture (1189-1272) can be seen in the
Chancel Arch and the aisle arcades. Between 1272 and 1377 the architectural age was the
Decorated period. This is represented by the window in the west end of the north aisle that is now used as a choir vestry; also the windows of the chancel are of this period. The lion motif of
the Mowbray family can be seen on the West Wall inside the North Porch. Between 1377 and 1547 was the Perpendicular Period. The Tower, the clerestory and many windows and
battlements constructed over the aisles, were built in this period. The Priest’s Vestry is also of this period. During the Civil War, fanatics desecrated the church so that only the walls were left
standing. The church was rebuilt from the ruins with alterations. For instance the Chancel was made smaller. There were two chantries at one time, now the organ occupies one and the other
at the end of the south aisle has disappeared.
In 1868 the church was renovated. The Nave was re-floored, the north and south aisles were re-roofed and a new pulpit, altar and altar rails were installed.
Within the church are a number of objects of historic interest. There are two chairs that date from the 16th and 17th centuries. There is also the old parish chest from the 16th century where
parish records were kept. The Church Register dates from 1538 showing baptisms, weddings and funerals as ordered by Thomas Cromwell, minister of HenryV111. There was a Mazor Bowl
dating from 1525 made out of wood but this was sold in 1947 for £1000,00. The church has eight bells, of which were recast in 1937 together with a Coronation Bell (note F). The grave of
Samuel Wesley is of obvious historic interest. In 1742 when revisiting Epworth, John Wesley
offered to take the morning services at the church, but the curate, Rev. John Romley, rejected his offer. In the evening, however Wesley took his father’s tombstone as a pulpit and preached
to a vast crowd. In the first decade of the 21st century restoration was extensively carried out including installation of solar panels on the chancel roof. Bibliography: - Epworth – Home of the Wesleys – Le Cato Edwards The History of the Isle of Axholme – Re. W.B. Stonehouse M.A.

Now & Then – Then & Now
No.24 By Anthony Catherall
This month and every month see Epworth and Beltoft in bygone days and compare to today’s images!
For a change this month we look at the Hamlet of Beltoft in old money.
On 24 October 1894 and again on 13 July 1897, the Temple Belwood Estate in the Belton Parish came up for auction at the Angel Hotel, Doncaster. The whole comprised 2,118 acres of arable and pasture
land with Homesteads. Above we see the areas in green to be sold Beltoft on the map of 1897. Interestingly in white, is Miss
Collinson’s property of Beltoft House (still there today) and land nearby not part of the sale. The lots in Beltoft, were all rented on a yearly basis to various tenants. I highlight some; No. 377a
Beltoft Farm - 87 acres 0 Rood 1 Perch, let to John Watson - rent £109.1s.2d. The Old Farm - No.
382 – of 198 acres was let to Mrs Jemima Webster her rent £199.7.4d. On the West Butterwick road then was Walnut House Farm – it consisted of146 acres rented to George Bowman at £125.5.4d.
Opposite No. 477 - Second Farm House & Homestead – let to the Executors of Mr Ducker at £151.7.1d., including numbers 479-480 Capital Cottage & Garden. The Farm Beltoft - No. 372a
on the main road was 172 acres and was farmed by brothers, George & Arthur Kelsey it was rented to them at £129.3.0d. As a help to our younger readers, conversion: Area 1 acre = 0.4 hectare or a
large football pitch - I rood = 1,011.71sq.m. & 1 perch = 25.29sq.m. Currency 240d (pence) = £1 – 12d =1s (shilling) 20s =£1 (pound)
Below, an undated postcard of Beltoft with houses on the main road through the Hamlet.

ROUNDABOUT OR JUNCTION
Some American friends, and those visitors who come to England express
their surprise at many things. The way we can walk to the shops for example, and the
narrow strips of tarmac we call pavements, rather than their wide sidewalks.
Remembering that they also drive to malls to do their shopping. But they also show
surprise at the number of, and our dependence upon roundabouts-- not magic ones,
but the traffic roundabouts. Some parts of North America do have them, though not
to our number and there they are called traffic circles.
You may have noticed from American TV programmes and films, that they base their urban
system on light controlled junctions. This means (usually) that cars stop to allow the traffic with the green
light to proceed , as we also do at such junctions. In urban areas it creates a stop start dynamic to the
journey.
However the roundabout allows a more free traffic flow. It does not inevitably demand a stop, but with a
commonly understood protocol, gives priority to cars from the right, and allows courtesy to other road
users. It is generally a much smoother process. Mini roundabouts seem to cause confusion, which though
meant to be used a roundabouts, are occasionally (by the car in front of me) treated as a junction.
As Christian people we do not have to stop start. In our meeting with other people on the
roundabout of world, national. and local community affairs we are called to demonstrate consideration
and courtesy for others. Sometimes this means giving priority to others, if their claim or need is more
urgent and pressing. The roundabout system depends on mutual understanding and consideration, the
traffic light is either stop or go, solely dependent on the colour of the light.
I appreciate roundabouts, and I applaud a roundabout world that demonstrates consideration and
courtesy, and priority to others when necessary. I hope I belong to a roundabout church!

February got off to a good start at Axholme Camera Club with a very
interesting presentation by Jim Hartje ARPS. Jim explored the creative side of his photography with ' My
Photography-Fine Art or Creative Expression' which led to a lot of discussion.
Then came Richard Egan-Headley FRPS who demonstrated how to take the perfect portrait. Amy,
daughter of member Chairman Roberts, on her first assignment as a model, patiently sat through the
evening under the floodlighting while Richard photographed her from different angles, talking all the time
about the procedure, as well as telling amusing anecdotes. It was a very useful and educational evening and
many members went away ready to have a go themselves.
The first competition of the year had the subject of Birds, and was ably judged by the current Chairman,
Geoff Trinder ARPS, himself a keen Nature photographer, particularly interested in birds. Forty-two
members arrived, most with prints for the competition, and the standard and variety was high, making a
difficult job for Geoff. His eventual choices were
Clour Section, Jean Goodburn, of Hatfield scored 20 and 19, Angie Skidmore19 and 19, George Fiddler,
Owen Wressell and Dave Neale 18 each. The Mono Section winners were Angie Skidmore 20, Jean
Goodburn 19, Guy Myers of Gainsbough a new member entering for the first time,18, David Nelmes 19
and George Fiddler 19.
As member Ken Thompson had attained the age of 80 years on the Monday of that week, Chairman
Roberts made him a beautiful birthday cake decorated with an artist's palette and brush, as Ken is also an
accomplished artist as well as an excellent photographer. The delicious fruit cake was divided up among
the members at the tea break.
Sandy Furniss FRPS made a return visit to talk about 'Moments Through My Lens ' and once again
overwhelmed his audience with the quality of his work. He explained how he gets such superb landscapes
and nature photographs with a view to helping members improve their own. This pleasant, quietly spoken
Scot received resounding applause and requests to return again with more of his fantastic work.
Two dates for your diary, an evening OPEN to all on Wednesday 6th April is a presentation by
Allan Rowsell 'California Dreaming'. This promises to be a fascinating evening as Allan's undoubted
photographic talent combined with his ability to find interesting and unusual places usually produces an
excellent presentation.
Coming up on Wednesday May 4th will be another evening
OPEN to all, as Lee Davis LRPS and Alan present some of
their wildlife photography.
Both these evenings will be in Haxey Church Hall starting at
7.30pm with a small charge of £1.50 to include refreshments.

M. P. IS ―OUT OF ORDER‖
Haxey Amateur Dramatic Society‘s next production is ―Out Of Order‖, another rip-roaring comedy by
Ray Cooney.
The action, set in the lounge of a hotel suite near
The Houses of Parliament, features errant M. P.
Richard Willey, a Government Minister, intent on
an adulterous affair with Jane Worthington, one of
Her Majesty‘s Opposition‘s office staff. John Spittle-
house is the lustful Minister & Lynsey Yeardley his
would-be lover. The discovery of a very much
unwanted presence in the room, played skillfully by
newcomer to the Haxey stage, John Brown compli-
cates matters unmercifully. Richard calls on his
hapless Parliamentary Private Secretary, George
Pigden, to extricate him from the web of deceit.
Nigel Smith makes a welcome return as George,
who soon finds himself in very hot water indeed.
Things go from bad to worse with the appearance
of Ronnie Worthington, Jane‘s angry young hus-
band, played by Andrew Lee, also happily returning
to the Society, & with the arrival of Pamela Willey,
Richard‘s sophisticated wife, played by Sheila Mor-
rey.
The other characters cannot be said to assist Rich-
ard get his wicked way, either. These are the often
perplexed Hotel Manager (Joan Young), a hotel
waiter on the make (Colin Emery), an Italian hotel
maid with little English (Pat Ellison), and the domi-
neering Gladys (Emma Speers).
The play is produced by Mary Lenanton, a frequent
director at Retford Little Theatre, although this is
her first full-length play at Haxey.
For a great evening of laughter, make sure you
catch this hilarious show. The performances are at
7.30pm on Friday & Saturday 1st & 2nd April & on
Thursday, Friday & Saturday 7th, 8th & 9th April in
Haxey Memorial Hall. Tickets (£5) are on sale from
9.00am-5.00pm at Green Hill Stores, Haxey, cour-
tesy of Bev and Greg Suszczenia. For block book-
ings & other enquiries please call Haxey (01427)
754294.
This will be the first time that the Society has
given 5 performances. The 2010 play sold out for
most performances and the group want to give as
many people as possible the opportunity to enjoy
the fun.

Easter Joy
So how is your Lent going? I trust that you won‘t ‗give up‘ on Mum on Mothering Sunday but will
give her a day to remember.
How am I doing? Sadly, the ‗Wispa‘ is no longer on our shopping list. How will Cadbury‘s survive
without my normal order? Look out for the new, slimmer Rector on Easter Day!
Last year, Karen and I were privileged to go to Oberammergau to see the Passion Play that the vil-
lagers put on every ten years. It was a remarkable experience to witness the Gospel accounts of
Jesus played out on a large stage with hundreds taking part. As we already knew the story, it didn‘t
matter that the production was in German!
The Passion Play and films like ―The Passion of the Christ‖ bring a freshness to the historic events of
Jesus‘ life, death and resurrection, which are at the heart of the Christian faith. This is not just an-
cient history, but relevant to us today.
Jesus‘ death on the cross and return to life was for everyone. Easter can be a joyful celebration of
the life God wants us all to live. God‘s love really is for each of us.
You are very welcome to join Joyful Easter Celebrations at a Church or Chapel near you. We would
love to see you!

Riddle Me This!
If you counted 20 houses going to school, and then 20 houses on the left, going home, how many houses have you counted? 20 houses
Tom has joined the track, he has to run around the school. Every time he runs he has to pull up his
pants. Tom runs about 5 min and stops to pull up his pants he runs about almost half a mile in 5
minutes .He has to run 3 miles to make the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS. He has to run 3 miles in
30 min and beat all the others without stopping.
HOW CAN HE RUN FASTER WITH OUT STOPING? - He needs to buy a belt
Harry went out to dinner with his friends Larry, Barry, and Gary. Harry sat across from Gary. At
Gary's right, opposite Barry, sat Larry. When the waiter came for their orders, Larry and Barry
ordered steak. Gary chose fish, and Harry (who likes to be difficult) ordered like this: "Unless the
man at the left of the man opposite the man who ordered fish is not having what the man across
from the man at the right of the man at my left is having, then I'll have what the man across from the
man at the right of the man opposite me ordered. Otherwise, bring me the fettuccine Alfredo."
Assuming "right" and "left" is from the viewpoint of the diners, what did Harry order?- What he
essentially said to the waiter was: "If Larry ordered the same thing as Gary, I'll have steak." Since
Larry ordered steak and Gary ordered fish, Harry does not get steak.

Speed and Acceleration
Dear readers,
Knowing when to use your car‘s power and when to take it easy are skills which every driver needs to
master. It isn‘t about driving around at a snails pace, its about using power and acceleration wisely,
smoothly and safely.
Power is nothing without control. This is true of all aspects of driving and a maxim the Advanced Driver
lives by.
A powerful sports car is at best wasted and at worst deadly in the hands of the amateurish or lazy driver.
Never abuse your car‘s power. Instead learn how the car delivers its power then use the experience to
make the most of it by driving as safely, smoothly, and as progressively as possible. Firm acceleration is
sometimes necessary –when joining a motorway or when overtaking for example but to make the best
use of your car‘s power band takes practice and an understanding of the way it delivers its torque (the
power that creates acceleration).
Being in the wrong gear at the wrong time can ‗bog‘ the engine down, restricting the car‘s acceleration
and possibly putting you in a hazardous situation. It‘s important to learn which part of the rev band
delivers the most torque and acceleration. This will ensure you select the right gear for the conditions and
the job in hand.
Test your sense of deceleration.
Here‘s a useful way to test your sense of deceleration. The next time you‘re driving along the road at the
national speed limit and see a 30mph or 40mph speed limit sign ahead, try to time the point at which you
‗lift off‘ the accelerator so that the car reaches the speed limit sign at the correct speed, without the need
to touch the brakes.
On twisty roads you can take this technique a stage further by managing the speed of the car between the
bends with accurate use of the accelerator. This will limit the amount of braking you need to do,
producing a smoother, more satisfying drive.
With smooth road surfaces and powerful, quiet cars, it can take serious concentration not to creep over
the speed limit.
Advanced Driving is not about driving slowly. A driver who tootles along at 50mph on a busy motorway
or a clear country road can be just as dangerous and frustrating as a speed demon. The skilled Advanced
Driver looks to make good progress whenever possible by carrying out well-timed overtakes; with
smooth, progressive controlled acceleration.
Remember just how difficult it would be to enjoy your motoring without a driving licence!

Advanced Motorists website at www.iam.org.uk or Tel: 020 8996 9600
