Sitting alone at home in Illinois, the former class clown-turned-recluse wondered if he was about to be one of those statistics. Casper had served four years as a Marine infantryman, including a combat deployment in Fallujah, Iraq. “My Humvee was blown up four times and my buddy Luke was shot and killed beside me,” Casper says. “I had a brain injury, PTSD and all these symptoms I didn’t know how to deal with. I was going down such a bad path.

At the same time, I had this urge inside me to tell my story – but I didn’t know how.” When a friend showed him some guitar chords, Casper turned a poem he’d written into a song about Luke. “But it still didn’t hon-or him the way I wanted to,” he says. Enter hit songwriter Mark Irwin (Alan Jackson’s “Here In The Real World,” Tim McGraw’s “Highway Don’t Care”), whom Casper met when he attended a songwriter round at Joe’s on Weed Street in Chicago. “Hey, have you ever written a song with a veteran or about a veteran?” Casper asked Irwin after the show. Irwin had (Billy Ray Cyrus’ “Runway Lights”), and he agreed to write with Casper. “I just could see and hear the passion he had for wanting to not only write about his own story, but help other veterans,” says Irwin. “And I fully believe that music has all kinds of power ... a lot of it unexplored. The more I listened, the more I wanted to be a part of it. “ That session “changed everything” for Casper, who immediate-ly wanted to share the experience with other veterans. One of his friends, Jesse, lost his leg in combat and has burns over 60% of his body. Casper raised money via GoFundMe, took Jesse to Nashville and set him up with songwriters Rob Blackledge, Noll Billings and Jeff Coplan. “That three-hour writing session did more for him than the six years he spent at the VA hospital,” notes Casper. “Before the ses-sion, he couldn’t talk to his wife or family. But then he wrote a song about it – and the first people he sang it to were his family. Because now it’s not his story anymore, it’s this song he’s excited about.” When a veteran writes their story into a song, Casper believes the process helps remap the brain to think about a negative past event in a positive light. “That was the moment I realized, ‘This needs to be a nonprofit,’” he says. With the guidance of philanthropist and Co-Founder Linda Tarrson, Casper started CreatiVets to help combat veterans heal through music, art and creative writing. Travel, lodging, food and logistics are covered by CreatiVets, with moral support from Casper. “I call them personally and tell them what I went through and how that felt to me,” he says. “I pick them up at the airport and take them to a writers round that night. I go with them to the writing session the next day. We create the idea of the song beforehand, so everything we reference from that point on isn’t their story, it’s their song. That’s what makes it easier to talk about.” Soldiers aren’t the only ones who benefit. Irwin remembers writing with Casper. “Seeing Richard’s thoughts come to life in the

Reviver’s Tenille Arts discusses her most influential music:1. The Dixie Chicks: They made me want to stay true to my country roots while recording my own music. 2. Miranda Lambert’s “The House That Built Me”: It feels like the writers knew my story before I did in this song. I strive to write like this.3. The Dixie Chicks’ Fly and Wide Open Spaces: My album is called Rebel

Child and that song is kind of like my “Wide Open Spaces.” Real instruments and true stories. 4. P!nk: I got last-minute tickets with my mom to one of her shows, and I was amazed at her stage presence and how she brought her songs to life. Going on a headlining stadium tour is my dream, and I would love to have elements of what she did in my show. • Highly regarded music you’ve actually never heard: Up until a year ago, I hadn’t listened to John Mayer’s albums even though everyone told me to. I knew his hit songs were amazing, but it wasn’t until The Search for Everything album that I got totally hooked on his music. Now I listen to it all the time.• “Important” music you just don’t get: Screamo. I can’t tell what they are saying and it sounds so painful. • An album you listened to incessantly: Graceland by Paul Simon. It’s kind of like my family’s Christmas music, so it has a timeless feel to me. I love his creativity. • An obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: “Black Smoke Rising” by Greta Van Fleet! My boyfriend sent me their music over a year ago, and I’ve been obsessed with that song ever since. I love their sound and style. • Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: One Direction. I probably know every word to their songs.

Ryan Kinder puts an industry spin on the artist interview: The first time I heard myself on the radio was on WUSY/Chattanooga when Gator Harrison was PD. I was on radio tour for my first single, “Kiss Me When I’m Down,” for about a week and came home on a Friday night. My wife told me something was wrong, but kept it vague, and said we needed to go to my buddy’s

house. When we got there, my friends and family were there and it was a surprise listening party. It was a moment I had dreamed of since I was a kid. It never gets old, either. One time on radio tour we had to drive all night in the snow through Wyoming to get to a station on time. It was a 12-hour drive and we were super tired. The drive itself was terrible, but I looked out the window and it really sunk in what I was doing. I was on the road doing what I loved. I’m going station to station to get my song played. I’ll never forget that. My new single “Stay” is the most honest song I have ever written. It’s a plea to the one you love to walk alongside you through life’s journey of ups and downs. Since writing it, I have found strength from this song in my career, as well. Music has been my companion and saving grace more times than I can count, and “Stay” reminds me of that. I’m a DIY guy, or I try to be at least. The last thing I made was a hanging stand for my dad’s bow and arrow out of one of my guitar stands. I don’t know if he uses it, but hey, I tried my best. I wish I had written “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” Allen Shamblin, who also co-wrote “The House That Built Me,” is one of my favorite writers of all time. It’s the perfect recording, with Bonnie Raitt singing and Bruce Hornsby playing the piano. My road essentials are my tennis shoes, so I can go for runs, and my headphones for flights. In college, the only way I could get through math homework was listening to either Classical music like Yo-Yo Ma, or ... Lil Wayne. Those were the two things that worked for me, for whatever reason. I’m currently streaming Scandal with my wife. We’re on season two and really like it so far. I’m also watching The West Wing. Aaron Sorkin is a genius.

song and seeing his reaction, it just made me feel good,” he says. “Offering up this tiny shred of relief feels like I’m doing something good with God’s gift to me.” Recalling his days as a recluse, Casper credits Country radio with getting him off the couch. “I heard on the radio that LoCash were coming to a local bar,” he says. “I didn’t want to leave my house, but thought, ‘I’ll leave for this because it’s country music.’ It got to me when nobody else could. How are you going to reach the people who need help the most if they aren’t seeking it? Well, radio will find them.” And radio has. “One of our songs was played on Big D & Bub-ba and a veteran came through our program because of it,” says Casper. “He was pulling into his driveway and heard the opening line, ‘Oh my god, I’m going to die,’ turned it up and listened to the whole song. He was not seeking help before, but he discov-ered CreatiVets. Radio actually brought him to us.” Casper is pursuing radio interviews in hopes of reaching others who are fighting the silent battle he once fought. “Cre-atiVets isn’t technically trying to get the songs we wrote on the radio because it’s not a part of our mission,” he says, “but if one them does, it’s a huge benefit to us because it helps veterans learn about our programs.” Reach Casper here; donate to CreatiVets here; and get tickets to the CreatiVets Aug. 22 Five-Year Celebration in Nashville here. –Wendy Newcomer

Satur-bae: Valory’s Thomas Rhett with radio friends at the MetLife Stadium stop of the 2018 Trip Around The Sun Tour Saturday (8/18).

Broadcast South’s WKZZ/Tifton, GA has added Collin Raye’s Rewind Country from Envision. Nashville Insider is adding 51 new affiliates this season, which begins Sept. 17. Major groups to carry the country music news TV show include Sinclair, Scripps, Hearst and Raycom. Industry vet Jennifer Herron became the first female disc jock-ey inducted into the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame. More here. Tickets are now available for the 16th Source Hall of Fame Awards (CAT 3/15), taking place Sept. 25 at Nashville’s Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum, here. The Dickson County Craig Morgan Foundation has updated its ongoing mission to enrich the lives of children in foster care and foster families in the area through fundraising that supports needs identified by the Department of Children’s Services and Child Advocacy Center in Dickson County, TN. More here.

The Week’s Top Stories Full coverage at countryaircheck.com.• KMNB/Minneapolis’ Paul Koffy departed. (8/16)• Beasley’s DJ Stout resigned. (8/15)• “Dr.” Chris Michaels joined Great Plains’ WIBL/Blooming-ton, IL. (8/14)• Mark Sturcken joined iHeartMedia/West Palm Beach & Ft. Pierce, FL. (8/13)

Take Up The Slack: A new station from Slacker Radio takes a similar approach. “We wanted to showcase the women who are making really good music in Nashville, but also tell their stories,” Country Format Captain Jess Wright says of #WCE (Woman Crush Everyday) Country. The station is hosted and curated by female artists, and solicits input from women in the music industry at large. A new app even allows contributors to add content remotely. “It basically turns a cell phone into a studio,” Wright explains. “We give [contributors] a VIP code that lets them be part of the station. They record whatever they want to say about whatever artist or song they want to talk about and broadcast it directly into our station.” Turn Of Events: In some cases local radio is amplifying the conversation. Former WQMX/Akron PD Sue Wilson made a point to showcase female artists with recurring events like the Chicks With Picks concert series and one-offs like Goat Yoga With Lindsay Ell. “Every man at the station thought it was ridiculous,” Wilson recalls of the latter. “They

Long May You Rain: Blue Chair/Warner Bros./WEA’s Kenny Chesney makes the best of a rain delay at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ Saturday (8/18). Pictured (back, l-r) are WKMK/Monmouth’s Brian Morelli, Chantel Esposito, the label’s John Esposito, WKHX/Atlanta’s Scott Gaines, WRBT/Harrisburg’s Newman, WKMK’s Mike Ryan, WCTO/Allentown’s Jerry Padden, WNSH/New York’s Mike Allan, Billboard’s Silvio Pietroluongo and daughter, WNSH’s Jesse Addy, Katie Neal and John Foxx and Jenn Miller; (front, l-r) the label’s Diane Monk, Denise Newman, WKMK’s Nina Siciliano, Michelle Allan, Chesney, Kat Foxx, the label’s Adrian Michaels and iHeart’s Rob Miller.

hadn’t heard of it and were very skeptical. We didn’t have a lot of in-house support, but [Promotions Director] Jody Wheatley and I pushed forward. The event sold out in less than 10 minutes.” Out-of-the-box thinking can elevate the gender debate, but it can also point to other important goals. “They [serve] the female target of our station,” Wilson says. “The goat yoga event ben-efited a local animal shelter, and Chicks With Picks raises money for a local program that provides mammograms for women who can’t afford them. Again, not only well-targeted to the demo, but win-win in that these women and their music is showcased.”

Next Question: Progress may be limited so far with regard to airplay and chart position, but many believe the tide will even-tually turn. “The industry has made progress by being more open to, and more willing to play and support emerging female talent,” Premiere/CMT’s Cody Alan argues, pointing to the success of Maren Morris and Kelsea Ballerini over the last few years. “And thankfully, we’re hearing more female talent from the labels. That gives decision-makers more options, and increases the likelihood of exposing new female artists to the audience. However, there is still work to do.” “There are a lot of minds to change,” Smith observes. “There has been enough progress to keep ruffling feathers. As long as we keep the conversation going, at some point people can’t say no.” CMT’s Leslie Fram, too, is encouraged. “These are great first steps,” she says. “The next step would be getting these artists in regular rotation whether it’s in playlists or on the radio.”
