Choosing a piece of equipment

Buying any large piece of equipment is difficult and fraught with problems. These notes are offered as a guide to overcome problems experienced when choosing equipment such as lack of experience or knowledge of what is available. It is important in our eyes to match each individual’s desire with their budget to effectively get the best value for money.

Budget is almost always the driving force behind the decision you will make. Sometimes it may be prudent to wait until you can afford the best rather than compromise on the immediate need. Generally we would argue that purchasing a piece of equipment, such as a potter’s wheel should be for life. If you think you will buy cheap and then trade up, it is probable that you will be disappointed or be conscious during use that the equipment has shortcomings. However, we would never try to argue that the cheapest model is the worst and the dearest is the best. Whatever the price, it is important to match the equipment to the user and the intended use.

Each section has a description of the equipment detailed within that category. If applicable reasoning notes are also added to aid making your choice.

EQUIPMENT DELIVERY The logistics of delivering equipment is often overlooked. You must be aware how your equipment will arrive and what you may be responsible for. We would like to make all customers aware of what is included in the services we offer.

PALLET DELIVERY

This service can be applied to the delivery of wheels, pugmills or any piece of equipment with external dimensions no greater than a metre square. The equipment is strapped to a pallet and delivered by means of a lorry with a tail lift. These vehicles normally have a pallet truck that can be used to manoeuvre the pallet on flat ground, but it must be appreciated that the price given is to deliver to site and off-load.

It is the customer’s responsibility to remove the kiln or equipment from the pallet and move into position.

Nabertherm Kilns are delivered by DHL pallet delivery service. The drivers will only off-load to the nearest convenient point. (Note: If a delivery driver offers to help further they are not covered by insurance and you are accepting responsibility for any damage that may occur to property or the equipment.)

DELIVER, OFF-LOAD INTO POSITION

This is more of a tailored service and covers all sizes and shapes of equipment. Again, it is delivered by vehicle with a tail-lift. The vehicles will always have a pallet truck and the driver will off-load and move the equipment into position. A survey is requested to give the carrier information on the surfaces and site to be encountered. This service includes negotiation of no more than one step measuring 4”. Delivery of heavy equipment cannot be guaranteed on uneven or soft terrain. For large or relatively unstable equipment, assistance is requested from the customer. This service is not available to all UK locations.

Wheels What wheel to buy?

Buying a potter’s wheel should be an exciting process, but it can also be intimiating. There are a number of variables you need to consider before making your decision. Potter’s wheels can come in many forms. The following details the different types of wheels available.

Kick or Power? Kick:

Benefits DrawbacksLittle maintenance required (just the greasing of bearings). Not easy to use, especially for a beginner.

Choice of stand up or seated. Not portable.

Not much cheaper than the cheapest power wheel.

There are two types of kick wheel; geared or momentum (the momentum is normally by having a very heavy wheelhead).

As demand for has fallen away we now longer offer any form of kick wheel in our range.

Power:

Benefits DrawbacksChoice of 3 drive systems: Cone, Electronic (Belt drive) and Electronic (Direct drive).

Portabililty depends on the seating arrangement - wheels without seats will tend to be lighter and more portable that wheels with seats.

Choice of stand up, seated or a seat as an optional extra.

Types of Power Wheel:

Cone or Electronic?

The best known and probably biggest manufacturer of cone driven wheels was Shimpo. However, Shimpo have now ceased to manufacture cone wheels and have replaced all cone models with the “Whisper” range. As the cost of electronic wheels have fallen to a similar price for the best cone wheels we too have discontinued the supply of this format and now we only supply electronic wheels.

In our view, torque (the measured ability of a rotating element) is better on electronic wheels and the transition of speed on electronic will always be smoother, especially at slower speeds (cone wheels can loose torque at very slow speeds and become jerky).

Drive Systems

Electronic wheels work by varying the voltage to motor to vary the speed and all the electronic wheels we supply now use the safe AC motor in conjunction with inverter control systems

Belt Drive Direct DriveAll Brtish built power wheels are run on belt drive systems: That is to say all the low-format and standard-format power wheel we supply - Bailey, Knightsbridge, Lincoln Electronic, Craftsman, Fitzwilliam and Wealden Throwing Wheel.

All American and Australian built power wheels are run on direct drive systems. That is to say all the extra-low format power wheels we supply - Shimpo Whisper range, Artists Table Top Wheel and Venco Direct Drive wheels.

Direct drive eliminates the use of drive belts and bearings and therefore reduces the build cost.

When replacement of worn parts is required, repair costs are greater than belt driven electronic wheels as the direct drive motor has to be dismantled. This should always be carried out by competent qualified engineers.

The drive system of cone wheels is by friction. This is a metal cone against a rubber drive ring.

AT-A-GLANCE GUIDE TO THROWING WHEEL FEATURES

Original electronic wheels using DC motors and speed controls could be slightly jerky at 0-5 r.p.m., but this problem should not be found on any of the electronic wheels we now offer.

It is strongly advised that if any wheel is attached to old wiring (i.e. without circuit breakers) a plug in RDC type circuit breaker is used between the plug and the socket. Especially with DC motors.

Format

Format refers to the size and ergonomics of design:

Extra Low Format: Bench mounted or with the addition of short legs.Low Format: A height of just below waist height when standing by the wheel.Standard Format: Provides a seating position where the thrower’s feet cannot touch the ground.

Casing

Casings can be made from wood or have an angle iron frame with a plastic casing and pressed sheet metal. The sheet metal casing acts as a sound box. Wooden cases tend to deaden sound made by the wheels.

Additions

Some wheels will accept acessories to aid a specific process. Batt holding wheelheads or studded wheelheads can be fitted to some wheels.

PugmillsWhat is a Pugmill?

Traditionally, clay was prepared by wedging and kneading. Wedging was the art of mixing dfferent consistencies of clay to form a uniform mass. Kneading was the final preparation of the clay to remove air pockets and develop the plasticity of the clay body. This is still done in many countries but a pug mill can make the task easier and quicker than the traditional manual method. Approximately one hour of pugmill use will produce enough pugged clay for an average professional potters’ days work.

A pugmill is used to blend clay to restore it to a more uniform ‘workable’ consistency. This applies to new clay or clay scraps from previous work. Clay is loaded into the feed hopper and an internal auger chops and mixes the clay, pushing it along the barrel before recompressing the clay and forcing it out the nozzle. The de-airing models incorporate a vacuum pump which removes air trapped within the clay whilst pugging is performed. This produces the highest quality clay for immediate use on a potter’s wheel. Tradtionalists can still argue that kneading will still produce a better clay and also a “feel or knowledge” of the clay body to the user.

The hopper mouths and nozzle should always be covered with plastic when not is use to avoid the clay in the barrel from drying out. Ideally the barrel of any pug should be cleaned out once a year.

7600 - 2” MINI WITH HOPPER

The economy range of pugmills has been specifically designed for the studio and classroom environment. They are compact and lightweight making them easily transportable. This model is fitted with a hopper

safety grid and thermal overload safety switch as standard.

7600/MS - 2” MINI WITH MICRO-SWITCH

This model has the same specification as 7600, but it is fitted with a interlocked hopper safety switch. This switch, together with its high torque motor, makes the pugmill extremely easy to load as there is no safety grid in the hopper to impede the flow of clay. When the loading handle is raised the machine switches off and then on again when the loading handle is lowered. Thermal overload safety switch is fitted as standard.

7601 - 3” MINI WITH HOPPER

7601/MS - 3” MINI WITH MICRO-SWITCH

The same specification as the 7601 version , but is fitted with a interlocked hopper safety switch negating the need for a hopper grid.

Slab Rollers

7210 - SLAB ROLLER 3’ & 7211 SLAB ROLLER 4’

The Clayman Slab Roller has been designed to provide extremely efficient and reliable methods of producing slabs of clay for hand

building or tiles. It has been designed using vast experience in slab roller production and incorporates a rack and pinion drive system, eliminating the need of maintenance from troublesome wire driven systems, the design allows for infinitely variable thickness of clay to be rolled by means of adjustment of the main roller using a simple threaded adjuster that allows for fine adjustment whilst keeping the

equal distance above the table across its length. The large single roller is made of a rust proof material to avoid corrosion or

contamination of the clay. The slab roller has fully collapsible legs so it can be easily transported and comes complete with a set of high

quality rolling cloths

Please note slab size can only be given as a approximation due to the different natures of clay used.

7214 - MOTORIZED SLAB ROLLER

The Motorised slab roller is fully automatic , the operator simply places the clay on the slab roller adjusts to the required thickness

closes the interlocked safety cage and then presses the cycle button . The slab roller will then make two passes over the clay and then come

to a complete stop.

It is labour saving i.e. whilst the clay is being rolled it leaves you free to proceed with other duties around the class room or studio,

extremely safe in operation , out standing results are produced from the combination of constant pressure at a set speed , ideal for the

handicapped or physically impaired.

The slab roller uses the same excellent standard of engineering as our other slab rollers. The main roller is manufactured from

corrosion resistant alloy and has infinite adjustment between approximately 2mm and 30mm via a centrally mounted threaded adjusting handle, thus eliminating the need for packing boards.

Spray Booths

7801 - DRYBACK SPRAY BOOTH

This Spray Booth has been designed for use in the classroom or small pottery workshop. The booth is fitted with a 12” electric extractor fan which produces an air velocity of 250 cfm at the face. A stand and

washable heavy duty filter are fitted as standard.

7800 - WATERFALL SPRAY BOOTH

This Waterfall Spray Booth has been designed to meet the ever increasing need to protect our environment. The water wash spray

booth works on the principle of a curtain of continuous recycling water running down the rear face of the spray booth, a glaze spray is aimed towards this curtain, the spray being guided by a powerful extraction fan, the glaze is trapped by the water curtain, whilst the air stream is pulled through the booth and into a washable stainless steel pre filter

and finally into a washable filter bag. The excess glaze is washed into the tank and can at a later date be

reclaimed depending on the type and colour of the glaze. There is a ball valve to allow the water to be drained and the contents of the tank

removed. Any glaze materials can also be removed and disposed of safely. The booth is mounted on four castor wheels. The 7800 is primarily designed to be used by the studio potter and educational faculties for low volume production, therefore the booth does not need ducting to atmosphere making it portable around the studio

environment.

This spray booth uses a sophisticated baffle system to prevent water take through into the filter bag, they are designed to be used with water based material only, but can be adapted if required for solvents. If the

spray booth is to be used in a production environment it may be necessary to duct to the atmosphere, please

contact our technical department is you require further advice.

6998 - GLECO TRAP

The Gleco Trap is an innovative, inexpensive solution in preventing clay and glaze materials blocking waste pipes. The system easily

fits most standard sink cabinet areas and is easily maintained. Recommended for light to medium use.

The Gleco Trap is easily installed. The trap is connected below the sink and collects solids in a bottle, which has a fill line. when the

solids reach the fill line, the trap is drained through a valve, the bottle is exchanged with a replacement bottle, the valve shut and the trap is

back in service. Bottle exchange is rapid and done without the need of tools (less than 2 minutes).

6999 - CLAY TRAP

The Clay Trap measures 552 x 400 x 270mm deep. The cut-away lid in our illustration reveals the two weirs, the inlet on the left and the

outlet, which has a 76mm water seal on the right. Both inlet and outlet have coupling nuts for joining to 38mm ‘Vulcathene Mechanical’ pipe.

Recommended for medium to heavy use.

Whirlers can also be known as Banding Wheels. they are metal turntables that are used on a work top to aid the decoration and making of ceramics. Alloy whirlers are lighter and easy to transport, therefore especially good for modelling. Steel whirlers are heavy and ideal for banding lines onto plates or bowls as they will spin for longer. All whirlers have concentric circles etched into the working surface to aid “re-centring” of work in progress. Also very useful in a Spray Booth for turning pireces that are being sprayed.
