With depression hitting kids ata very young age, the Britishgovernment has come with aunique way to help pupils beatthe blues - by offering classes onthe art of happiness.
The government is hoping torestore the feel good factoramong children by teaching themhow to look on the bright side oflife, reports Timesonline.
In the Penn Resiliency Pro-gram, imported from the UnitedStates, 11-year-old students areto be taught how to shrug off set-backs and banish pessimisticthoughts. This will help the chil-dren cope with whatever life
throws at them. The scheme has been scientif-
ically tested and shown to pro-duce positive results.
More than 1,500 11-year-oldsin 22 schools are already on thecourses in a pilot scheme master-minded by one of the worldsleading authorities in "positivepsychology".
Dr Martin Seligman, a psychol-ogist in Pennsylvania, will meetHazel Blears, the communityssecretary, this week to discusslaunching the programme na-tionally.
In the classes, children aretaught how to deal with difficult
situations and emotions, as wellas developing attitudes and skillssuch as assertiveness, decision-making and relaxation.
They are urged not to think orreact like Chicken Little, the fa-bled hen who wrongly feared thatthe sky was falling in and insteadthey are shown how to act posi-tively in seemingly negative sit-uations.

Blade Runnerprepares for glory
Blade Runner OscarPistorius is preparingto launch his bid fortriple sprint glory at
the Paralympics with an eye onfuture Olympic dreams. Nick-named after the specially adapt-ed carbon fibre blades he wears, the 21-year-old won a court bat-tle to compete at last monthsOlympics but failed to qualify.Despite setting his sights on theLondon Olympics in 2012, thedouble amputee is focused on thetask in Beijing: he wants to winthe 100m, 200m and 400m gold as
well as break a world record. He isthe world record holder in hiscategory in all three events. Pisto-
rius did not have the ideal start tothese Games, being involved in aspat with South Africas sportingchiefs over a number of issues, including the late arrival of theteams kit in China and travel ar-rangements to Beijing. But theman with the reputation of thefastest thing on no legs said heis focused on his bid for a cleansweep in the sprints despite jan-gling nerves ahead of his first raceMonday.
Ready for the challengeI think nerves and pressure
are good things, but Im very ex-cited as well, he said. The vil-lage is amazing, the food is good,
the vibe is awesome, the compe-tition venues are more than what we could ask for and I think itsgoing to be a good formula for abrilliant Games and a lot of worldrecords. Pistorius believes thequick pace of the track in Beijingmakes world records more likely. If you look at the Olympics andhow many world records werebroken, thats definitely going toreflect on the Paralympics. TheSouth African, defending his Pa-ralympics 200m title, is hoping torun a world record in the 400mbut admits breaking his own200m mark is going to be a chal-lenge. In the 100m he is expectinga tough race against two-time de-fending champion, Marlon Shir-ley. Marlon and I are facing each
other for the first time since Ath-ens. In my opinion, he has beenrunning scared since then, he
said, stoking up the rivalry. Pisto-rius had both of his legs amputat-ed as a baby due to a congenitaldisorder. Then, in January 2004,he shattered his right knee on therugby field and doctors recom-mended he switch to track, launching a glittering career.
Among his many achievements iswinning the silver medal over 400metres in the 2007 South AfricanNational Championships com-peting against able-bodied run-ners a performance thatboosted hopes of Olympic qual-ification. Though Pistorius saidhis ultimate aim is to competealongside able-bodied athletes atthe Olympics, he is now focusedon the Paralympics.
If I get the opportunity one
day, which I really hope I dparticipate in the Olympics, ing that time Ill view myself a
Olympian. At the moment, Ithe Paralympics, so I view mas a Paralympian. In generalan elite sprinter and thats
way I view myself. Pistoriussaid there is a difference inapproach to the ParalymOne of the things Ive learnfrom an able-bodied backgro
you run to win, whereas fromParalympic background youto better yourself, and I tthats far better and far moreportant in sport. We often sight of that and want to wiany cost, but at the end of theits better coming second running a personal best

race and bad sportsmanship. Troubledall-rounder Andrew Symonds, whowas also involved in a bust-up withSingh, has been ruled out and told toget psychological help after missing ateam meeting to go fishing. BatsmanMike Hussey said Australia had gainedplenty of confidence and valuable

I spent four days with Warnie before I came (to Darwin) and did a lot of talk-ing and going through field placements for my type of bowling, which I
found really helpful. I will be on the phone to him continuously and I think my part-time spin will be handy in those (Indian) conditions.

Benny Dayal, whose love for musicbegan way back in childhood, al-
ways wanted to become a singer. After his schooling he came to
Chennai to become one. During gradua-tion in MCC, Benny got his first chance tosing. Beyond my graduation, I wanted to
be a singer, which is why I came to Chen-nai. Coincidentally, there was a voicehunt happening and I got selected for it. Aband called S5 was formed by SS Music.
We made an album, did shows outside, but once that was over it was back tosquare one, Benny explains.
After S5, Benny hit a dead end for a while. During this break, he finished hisPost Graduation and went on to work foran IT company. This was when he beganhis tryst with Tamil playback singing.
I was completely shocked when I got achance to sing in the chorus of the Balle-laka song from Sivaji. After this I sang forChakkarakatti.
When most singers who enter the sing-ing industry aim to sing for A.R. Rahman,Benny had a dream debut that many
would envy. His first solo number, alsocomposed by A.R. Rahman, MaduraikkuPogadhadi from Azhagiya Tamizh Ma-
gan, topped the charts, following whichthere has been no looking back.
Benny is all praise for the music maes-tro. Working with a man like Rahman is achallenge. I want to sing as much as pos-sible, especially for him. His songs alwaysleave a trail behind. Something alwaysclicks. Its not normal. Its somethingmagical. Rahman has some kind of magic
in him.Benny, who was a product of one of
the earliest forms of reality shows, dis-agrees with what has now become anoverdose of reality and melodrama.
I wouldnt call the show I waspart of, a reality show. There wasnt
any melodrama like there is now. Ijust auditioned and I got through. The reality shows that come onTV now have a high dose ofmelodrama, he exclaims. Itseasy to tell that this vibrant
youngster is extremely pas-sionate about what he is do-ing. Though Rahman isalways on top of his list ofinspirations, Michael Jack-son and Shankar Mahade-van, too, have caught hisheart.
Shankar Mahadevanis the greatest singer Ihave ever heard, he says, adding, I feel I fit any kind of sing-ing. Especially, after S5, where there
were a lot of hectic studio sessions, Ihave now learnt to perform. If itcould happen, it would be great tobe a part of S5 again.
Benny, who comes from theGulf, had to read and write Arabictill class X and hence is fluent inthe language. With Tamil, Hindiand Malayalam offers alreadypouring in, Arabic might just bethe right note that gives him anedge above the rest.

Dear Diary,My journey as choreographer
started off with Pudhu Pudhu Ar-thangal (1989). It was this film
which brought a new meaning tomy life. Though I liked dancing, I
was not really interested in chore-ography. K. Balachander Sir, who
was the director of the film, andRaghu Master encouraged me totake up this chal-lenging responsibili-ty. I was the
youngest choreogra-pher then but wasvery keen on tryingout new ideas. Tillthen I was an assis-tant under Raghu. I
was proud to be theyoungest choreogra-pher around and Itook up choreogra-phy as my career with full spirit.
One of the most unforgettabledays of my life as choreographer isthe 1996 Miss World extravaganza. Ihad to train nearly 350 dancers andmore than half of the girls werefrom colleges of Chennai. The for-eign choreographer who was totrain the girls backed out due tosome reason and I had to managethe ballroom dance, ballet and clas-
sical. I, with the help of my sisters, managed it and the show took us togreat heights. We were appreciatedfor the show, with a special mentionfor the ballet.
Then it was my National Award inthe year 2001 which gave me heapsof happiness. During the rehearsal,Dr. Vyjayanthimala Bali acted as thePresident of India and she called me
and introduced me toothers. It was a proudmoment of my life.
After the birth ofmy son Vidhyuth, myhappiness saw nobounds. Six monthsafter the delivery, I
was a little hesitant totake up the Maanaa-da Mayilaada projectfor Kalaignar TV but I
went on with it. Andnow, when I hear that it is one of thetop 50 reality shows in India, I feelquite happy for having taken up thisshow.
My journey as a choreographerwas not full of roses. I had to crossmany thorns to reach those roses. But the pain changed into happi-ness when my work got recognised.
As told to Monisha Mohandas
One of the mostunforgettabledays of my lifeas choreographeris the 1996Miss Worldextravaganza
