FROM THE PRESIDENT

For 116 years, Savannah State University has been an important part of higher education. As the oldest public HBCU in Georgia and the oldest institution of higher learning in the historic city of Savannah, SSU has served this community with distinction while meeting the educational needs of an increasingly diverse student population.

The 173-acre campus is by far the most picturesque in the state of Georgia. The moss-laden sweeping oak trees, expansive marsh and historic architecture create a resplendent yet tranquil atmosphere. Beneath the beauty and splendor is a vibrant residential campus bursting at the seams with the vim and vigor of quality collegiate life: relevant academic majors, engaging lectures, cutting-edge research, quality student-faculty engagement and a nurturing environment. I invite you to become a part of the SSU family. Please continue your exploration of Savannah State University - both on the Web and in person – and share our excitement.

Again, welcome to Savannah State University.

Earl G. Yarbrough, Sr., Ph.D.President

Campus Life

The University offers a comprehensive array of organized and informal co-curricular activities including 75 student organizations, leadership workshops, 15 intramural activities, student publications and student internships. Student organizations and leadership workshops increase student involvement in campus governance, help students develop a greater understanding of the link between leadership and co-curricular activities on campus, help students become more purposeful in their academic pursuits, and apply institutional values of honesty, civility and respect for freedom of thought and expression.

SSU offers a full range of recreational activities and facilities for students, faculty and staff including two gymnasiums, a pool, outdoor tennis courts, soccer fields, basketball courts, and a fitness center with state-of-the-art exercise equipment.

S S U H I S T O R Y

Savannah State University, founded in 1890, is the oldest public historically black college in Georgia. Originally named Georgia State Industrial College for Colored Youth, SSU was located in Athens, Georgia for several months in 1891. On October 7, 1891, SSU moved to its permanent location in Savannah. Major Richard R. Wright Sr. served as the institution's first president from 1891-1921. Under the administration of the school's third President, Benjamin F. Hubert, the college became a full-time degree granting institution in 1928. Four years later, Georgia State Industrial College for Colored Youths was renamed Georgia State College.

During the tenure of the college's fifth president, Dr. William K. Payne, the school became Savannah State College. In 1996, the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia granted the school university status and the institution was renamed Savannah State University.

technology building. He also worked to garner more than $15 million in research grants, gifts and contracts that supported undergraduate and graduate programs, equipment and student scholarships. Under his leadership, all programs were accredited by the National Association for Industrial Technology.

In 1998, Yarbrough was selected as provost and vice president for Academic and Student Affairs at Virginia State University (VSU) in Petersburg, Virginia. As chief academic officer for the university, he managed over $75 million in state and federal funds, tuition and fees, research dollars, grants and gifts to the university. Under his leadership as provost, he directed the university’s five-year strategic plan and the day-to-day academic concerns of the institution. Yarbrough provided the direction for the establishment of the School of Engineering, Science and Technology and the School of Graduate Studies, Research and Outreach during his tenure. One of the more notable accomplishments of his career at VSU was the establishment of five new degree programs— the first in over 20 years at the university—and the first doctoral program.

A native of Wichita, Kansas, Yarbrough holds aBachelor of Arts degree in industrial education from Wichita State University; a Master of Arts degree in industrial studies from California State University at Los Angeles, and a doctorate in industrial education from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. Yarbrough is a graduate of the Kellogg Foundation Minority Serving Institution Leadership Program and the Harvard University Institute for Educational Management. He is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, has written numerous articles for scholarly publications and is recognized for his accreditation work with the National Association for Industrial Technology. Yarbrough and his wife Patricia have four children: Kim, Angela, Delmar and Earl Jr.

Earl G. Yarbrough Sr.,Ph.D., was named the 12th president of Savannah State University by the University System of Georgia Board of Regents on May 30, 2007. He began his tenure on July 1, 2007.

Yarbrough began his career in higher education in 1976 at Northeastern Oklahoma State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. His dedicated service and “student-oriented approach” to academics quickly gained him recognition by his peers and administration, and led to a promotion as university planner. Yarbrough’s work would later lead to his appointment as chair of the industrial technology program at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff in 1984, where he served until 1986. As chair, he revisedthe academic program, increased student enrollment and was responsible for the development and implementation of a highly successful technology transfer and symposium program.

In 1986, he was appointed the founding dean of the School of Technology at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro, North Carolina. As dean at North Carolina A&T, Yarbrough expanded the degree programs to include a master’s and consortium doctoral degrees with several other universities while also obtaining state funding for the construction of an $8 million

Martin currently holds the Conf-USA record in the long jump at 26’5” (8.05m), and recorded a personal best 53’9” in the triple jump, 6.37 seconds in the 55-meter dash, and 10.67 seconds in the 100-meter dash.

In his first full year as the jumps coach here at Savannah State, Coach Martin lead the jumpers of SSU to a 2009 indoor and outdoor season full of highlights which included producing a number of new school records. Sharonda Redfield bettered her PR by almost 2 ½ ft setting the indoor long jump record at 18’6” (5.62m). Ms. Redfield also improved her triple jump PR by nearly 4 ft, becoming the first jumper in recent years to eclipse the 39ft barrier. Amber Hughes started her SSU jumping career off right setting the indoor triple jump record at 38’ ¾”, advancing her PR by more than a foot and developing her long jump to 18”5 ¼” (5.62m). Chris Blount set the indoor triple jump mark at 48’5 ½” (14.77m) and the outdoor mark at 50’1” ½ (15.27) becoming SSU’s first jumper to break the 50ft barrier; an improvement of almost 3ft on his previous PR.

As a USATF elite level athlete and NCAA national level competitor, Coach Martin brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the SSU track and field team and plans to make an indelible mark on the program.

Bart Bellairs enters his second year as the Athletic Director at Savannah State University. Bellairs comes to Savannah State from Virginia Military Institute (VMI) in Lexington, Va., where he served as the senior associate athletic director, a position he held for three years. He also worked for ESPN as a color commentator for NCAA basketball.

At VMI, Bellairs was instrumental in tripling revenue totals for the first two years as senior associate athletic director. He worked with the VMI Keydet Club, an alumni athletic donor organization, which raised over $3 million in a single year to support both scholarships and the operating budget.

Bellairs was head men’s basketball coach at VMI from 1993 to 2005. During that period, he was named Southern Conference Coach of the Year, Virginia Coach of the Year and Sports Illustrated Unknown Coach of the Year.

A native of Richmond, Ky., Bellairs earned his undergraduate degree in sociology/social work at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, N.C., where he was a letterman in both basketball and baseball. He earned his master’s degree in physical education and athletic administration at Western Illinois University in Macomb, Ill.

“Becoming the AD at Savannah State is a great leadership opportunity with a program that has incredible potential,” said Bellairs. “I’ve seen the blueprint President Yarbrough left at Virginia State, and I am excited that I’ll have the chance to work with him, Dr. Flythe, the coaches, student athletes, alumni and so many others to craft a new legacy for athletics at Savannah State.”

As athletic director, Bellairs is responsible for all matters related to managing SSU’s 15 intercollegiate sport teams for men and women. This includes directing and administering athletic programs and budgets; overseeing compliance with all NCAA rules and regulations, Board of Regents’ policies and university policies and procedures; and fundraising for programmatic needs.
