Filmcore, a Los Angeles-based post-productionediting and distribution company, approachedMelander Architects in late 2005 to assist them indesigning new offices for their San Franciscogroup. Filmcore asked Melander to develop acost-conscious design which would facilitatecommunication between their editors and staffwhile creating a residential-feeling environmentwithin which to host their clients. Additionally,Filmcore asked that the design maximize naturallight while highlighting the raw charm of their newindustrial loft space.
To accomplish these ends, Melander employedthree key components: 1) an open, "living loft" to
encourage casual interaction among staff andclients; 2) a continuous wall of translucent slidingglass doors and fixed panels to provide privacyfor the editing rooms along the north perimeterwall while allowing light to enter into the "livingloft"; and 3) an abundance of residential furniture,built-ins, and incandescent lighting to create thefeeling of a home rather than an office.
In 2007, Filmcore was awarded a NorthernCalifornia Chapter IIDA Honor Award

California Academy of SciencesLocation: San Francisco, California
On the 150th anniversary of their founding, as part ofthe construction of a new facility on the site of theircurrent building, the California Academy of Scienceshired Melander Architects to help them find a five-year temporary home. Our office and the Academyanalyzed five different building sites in San Franciscobefore selecting a building in the South of Market
District to house the Academy's Transition Museum &Research Facility.
Within the 217,000-square-foot, seven-story facilitythe Academy's broad range of functions include aworld-class public aquarium, exhibit and teachingspaces, a caf, a retail store, a research library, laboratories, collection storage facilities, andadministrative offices. Due to the complex
grouping of uses, the hazardous nature of some ofthe collections, and the stringent requirements of thecurators and scientists, Melander Architectsorganized and managed a multidisciplinary teamof specialists, including mechanical, structural, and fire-protection engineers, exhibit designers, aquarium designers, code expediters, and exhibitfabricators. With the opening of the facility in theSummer of 2004, the California Academy of Sciencesrepresents Melander Architects' largest and mostcomplex project to date and was awarded a SanFrancisco Chapter AIA award in 2007.

Glory Chen ShoesLocation: San Francisco, California
Melander Architects was asked to upgrade a twolevel store on San Franciscos Maiden Lane for acontemporary shoe designer, Glory Chen. The mainrequirement was to complete the design andconstruction within two and half months, whileavoiding any design moves that would trigger the city's
planning review process. The team met this challenge, with the store opening in May of 2008.
Glory Chen produces two lines of products. Workingwith the client, the architects placed the bolder line onthe ground level where it can be easily viewed fromMaiden Lane. The second, less avant-garde line wasplaced on the second floor and accessed by a sky-lit
open stair adjacent to a large wall mural designed bythe client Joy Chen.
Since the shoes and accessories are so unusual itwas determined that a simple white enclosure withcarefully chosen graphic counterpoints wouldforeground the product. The focus is on theproduct, not the environment.

Takara SakeLocation: Berkeley, California
The 6,500-sf expansion, a free-standing structure setin the service yard of an existing sake productionfacility, makes room for modern equipment andincorporates two new fermenting tanks with a totalcapacity of 33,000 gallons.
To meet the aggressive schedule, Melander Architectsdeveloped a straight-forward, functional form to expediteconstruction while simultaneously infusing the projectwith a high level of design, including sustainable features,in order to facilitate the project's passage through thecity's design review process. The new long-span buildingis comprised of concrete block with an open web steel joist roof structure. An east-facing clerestory runs thelength of the building to enhance interior daylighting, and
overtime, climbing vines will cover the south-facingexterior wall. Immediately adjacent to the new buildingstand two 35-feet-tall stainless steel fermenting tankssupported by a structural armature that allows accessto the tanks from above.
The site was reconfigured and new landscaping andfencing were introduced to buffer the neighborhood andcreate outdoor break areas for employees. Permeable
paving and flow-through planters to treat storm water, while not required, were well received by the city.

Casey Family ServicesLocation: Baltimore, Maryland
As part of the Annie E. Casey Foundation, CaseyFamily Services reaches inner-city areas to developcommunity-based programs to help strengthen fam-ilies and provide healthy, nurturing environmentsfor children.
The project brief called for converting an historic, early20th century firehouse into a counseling center thatincludes offices, classrooms, meeting rooms, a drop-indaycare center, outdoor play area, and basementsupport spaces. The design proposed a two-story,sky-lit atrium that sets off new construction from old andmaintains the integrity of the original brick structure. The atrium was conceived as the building's "living
room" and provides a welcoming space for casualgatherings and more formal meetings.
The client required sensitivity to the scale and massingof the neighborhood, so the design team preserved andcelebrated the character of the historic building whileintroducing a functional, cost-effective, and whollycontemporary addition.
Casey Family Services' new counseling facility receivedan Honor Award from both the Baltimore and Marylandchapters of the American Institute of Architects.

Croom Vocational High SchoolLocation: Marlborough, Maryland
In an effort to teach practical skills and encourage self-esteem in at-risk youths, Prince George's County askedCroom Vocational High School to provide an alternativeenvironment to the traditional public high school.
A scheme was developed to takes full advantage of therural, eastern sloping site while addressing the pragmatic
requirements of security, material deliveries, and a varietyof classroom configurations. First and foremost, the planhad to facilitate constant supervision of a student body witha history of discipline problems.
Composed of a two-story academic wing, a vocational wing, and a free-standing gymnasium, the complex is a hybrid oftraditional open-campus planning and double-loadedcorridor typologies. An outdoor walkway connects the
academic wing to the rest of the complex as students areinvited to leave the controlled interior and circulate along anopen-sided arcade with views of the athletic fields andfarmland beyond. While the students' sense of autonomy isset free by this open walk, the proximity of a glass-enclosedmedia center allows for close supervision of the courtyard.Building systems are affordable and durable, and includesand-blasted and ceramic-faced concrete block, stainedconcrete floors, and generous glass expanses opening to

West Jones Street ResidencesLocation: Savannah, Georgia
The West Jones Street Residences transform a 19th-century townhouse and carriage house in downtownSavannah into condominiums that juxtapose historic andcontemporary elements.
The intention of the remodel was to retain as muchhistoric fabric as possible, while ensuring that newelements -- such as kitchens, bathrooms, and staircases-- are distinctly contemporary in their design. Throughoutboth the townhouse and carriage house, original hardpine floors remain and were preserved and brick wallswere left exposed whenever possible. Although the newkitchens are contemporary, when they occupy historicrooms, the design treats the kitchen components morelike furniture, with extensive use of built-ins to make the
distinction between old and new as clear as possible.
The project is taking advantage of historic tax credits andfollowing the Secretary of the Interior's Standards forHistoric Preservation. It is also aiming for certification inthe U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energyand Environmental Design program , although whenhistoric preservation and sustainability measuresconflict, historic preservation takes precedence.

The program brief for this family vacation houseincluded combining kitchen, dining, and livingspaces into an open plan to allow for entertaining, creating a master bedroom suite that incorporatesa painting studio and porch, and providing twoadditional bedrooms and a flexible space to serveas both family room and guest room. The owner, a
Savannah native, wanted the house to withstandthe harsh conditions of its oceanside environmentwith minimal exterior maintenance.
Flood-zone regulations mandated that the housebe raised at least six feet off the ground. Theclient's requirements for parking, generous patiospace, and a pool were accommodated on thetight lot by raising the house an additional two
feet. Thus elevated, the house sits within acanopy of shade trees for privacy, while thespaces below frame views of the marsh andocean and form a sheltered breezeway.
The Island Residence has been featured innational publications, including Dwell, CustomHome, and The New American House IV.

Program: Renovation of Private Residence
When a debilitating illness rendered a beloved five-levelresidence inaccessible, the owners hired MelanderArchitects to study ways to integrate an elevator into thehome. Careful analysis found that an existing light wellcould accommodate a custom-three-sided elevator whileretaining most of the light well's function and minimizingthe impact on the interior spaces.
The top floor was completely reconfigured to create amaster suite and sitting area to create a strong connectionto outdoor terrace that extends the room. Thoughtful useof glass allows natural light deep into the home. A"walk-able" skylight enclosing the light well extends the terracewhile still allowing light to penetrate. Fire-rated glass wasused for the deck's handrail fulfills code requirementswithout obscuring light and views. Photovoltaic panels sitatop the suite.
While the location of the elevator significantly minimizedthe impact on the existing structure, the project still trig-gered seismic improvement requirements. Wheneverpossible, the design incorporated grab bars, wheelchair-friendly circulation, curbless showers, and other accessi-ble details to allow the couple to enjoy their home fully for
years to come.

Weigand CabinLocation: Greer, Arizona
This 850-square-foot vacation cabin is located in the WhiteMountains of eastern Arizona. The clients, a pair of educatorsat Arizona State University, wanted a summer retreat wherethey could focus on writing and painting.
The program called for a single bedroom, a living
room, and a dining room, as well as a loft that couldaccommodate weekend guests or serve as a study. Astrict budget required the design to employ a simpleform, traditional platform framing, and local materials.Affordable materials such as concrete block, cedarsiding, and raw aluminum roofing are left unadornedto age in their forest setting. The building's mass andorientation are designed to take advantage of passivesolar heating and cooling techniques while screening
out views of nearby neighbors.

Wilson ResidenceLocation: Walnut Grove, California
The Wilsons are a farm family native to the CaliforniaDelta region, who wanted to move from their suburbanhome to a working farmhouse in the midst of their pearorchard. The program included a 4,200-square-footresidence, a 900-square-foot barn, and 1,400 squarefeet of living quarters for long-term guests and seasonalworkers. The three structures are set within the
orchard and loosely arranged around a central courtyard, creating a sheltered ground for family gatherings andsubtly alluding to historic California farm compounds.
The buildings are long and low, with each one lookingback on the others across the open courtyard. Theyspeak an understated farm vernacular composed ofsimple forms, natural materials, and finely crafteddetails. Spartan concrete floors and corrugated steel
roofs mix with cool stucco plaster and warm fir windowsfor an effect that is both rural and modern.
Melander Architects was honored to have inheritedthis project at an early phase from our friend, the latearchitect David Morton. In developing and executing hisschematic design, it was crucial to both the Wilsons andour office that David's vision be respected. In the endwe feel we have created a project where our voices andDavid's blend to speak in harmony.
