Concept:This design for the Arid Regions Research Institute was based on the surrounding geological features, and more specifically the canyon and mountain. The canyon like gap between the two buildings allowed for a maximization of outdoor circulation spaces. The mountain- like organization allowed for a practical gradation of spaces from public to private, and a maximization of outdoor terraces. The metal louver system provided shading while maintaining access to the views of the nearby mountains and surrounding campus

Tumamoc Hill is an important place for the research of ecology and species diversity. The hill is also an important place in the Tucson running community for its uphill tread, and scenic views. The client stressed the need for meeting areas for visiting scientists and hoped for architecture that would facilitate conversation between recreational and researching visitors. Original buildings within the complex were all built using local volcanic stone. It was important for the buildings to be balanced in their compatibility with the surrounding historic buildings, while developing an aesthetic that is modern and distinct. This was accomplished through the use of the same volcanic stones slip formed in dark scoria concrete walls. Bathrooms used composting toilets to minimize environmental impact. Pitched ceilings facilitate solar power generation, and water harvesting.

Client: Net Sq. Footage: 100,000Program: Administration Offices Tribal Chambers Outdoor Gathering SpacesConceptThis design was based on a prominent view of the

peak of the nearby hill was a prominent existing water tank. From the water tank, the direct site line made for a strong axial organization within the complex. This axis was expressed within the tribal chambers by a single channel of diffused light that is reflected. The non-orthogonal form of the buildings resulted in two large courtyards lined with various shading trees. Building departments were grouped by size, and each department was allowed their own outdoor terraces and breakout spaces.

Concept:Although structural issues required a new building, the existing Vinson Owen school was an important aspect in my design. Like the existing school, my proposed design connects to the surrounding landscape through a series of terraced classrooms. This made possible a stronger connection to the surrounding natural environment. Other driving forces in the design included both natural lighting and solar energy production. These were both accomplished through the saw-tooth design of the classrooms and allowed for large clerestory windows, and abundant northern light. Accessibility was also an important aspect of my design. While the original school lacked wheelchair access, the proposed Vinson Owen School would use a double height atrium at the ground level to provide elevator access to each level.
