NSCRO –College Playoffs at Infinity this weekend
Saturday and Sunday this weekend are college rugby playoff days as PacWest Regional Championships are on
tap at Infinity Rugby Complex in Glendale, CO on April 6/7.
Cal Maritime Academy (CA) squares off with the University of Denver, Saturday, noon@StoveTop and
Occidental College (CA) takes on Benedictine College (KS), Saturday, 2pm on the Topper.
DU is a local side, but did you know that Benedictine College of Atchison, Kansas has a Colorado connection
beyond its home state's contiguous border? 'At's right. Jack
White, scion of Colorado's formidable White Rugby Clan, is a
principal for BC's Black Monks RC and will be onpitch with his
smart, razzle-dazzle along with former Regis Jesuit standouts Joe
and Mike Moran and SWARM's Peter Murphy as they take on
Occidental College in the second NSCRO knockout fixture at 2pm.
University of Denver entered into the playoff rounds as the #2 seed behind
Colorado School of Mines in its conference, but the Pioneers bested the
Miners in the CowBoy Cup last month to earn its berth on Saturday in
competition with CMA, 2012 NSCRO runners-up for the national title.
Saturday's second-placed teams will play Sunday at 11am on the StoveTop and
the contest for the last, Ultimate Four (aka NSCRO National Championship) slot will kick at 1pm up on Top.
The winner this weekend will advance to the NSCRO National Championship at Infinity's Kettle on the
weekend of April 27, 28. The current Field of Four is comprised of: Duke University (yes, that Duke), St. John's
University (not that one, the one from Collegeville, MN) and New England College (Henniker, NH).
Following NSCRO play at the Rugby Complex this Saturday, University of Colorado takes on University of
Wyoming at 4pm, and…
… at 6pm, the Glendale Raptors Elite men's squad go at it with Olde Puget Sound Beach Rugby Club inside
the Big Pot.
Benedictine College Black Monks will be there!
Occidental's innit!
DU's innit, too!
Cal Maritime is

Rugby Colorado Executive Board scores double-Knockout
written by: Bernie Decker
Rugby Colorado (RC) executive director Jean LaPierre, Rugby Colorado (the State's high school rugby oversight
organ) and its Executive Committee have proven their worth once again. Here is a case of two youths, one
well-experienced and one a novice, who were looking to play our game at levels commensurate their relative
statuses. They required transfers so that they could each enjoy their recreational rights. But like Amy
Winehouse says, Rugby Colorado just said, "No, no, no…"
The past few years has seen RC attempt to regulate perceived inequities in levels of play within its divisions,
RC has allowed certain player transfers, struck down others and "grandfathered" more in its effort to manage
the disparity evidenced on the field due to a variety of factors, but mostly it's process.
In a situation this spring, two extremely efficient and effective organizations were denied what would have
been a trade of players. This switch was agreed upon by the players, their once and future coaches, and the
kids parents, but Jean and his gang of backers denied the transfers on the grounds that allowing transfer
would be against the rules, though they have allowed transfers in similar circumstances.
From Dave Doessel, RC–EC auxiliary: "The EC has discussed this numerous times, and is not willing to reverse
the decision. It is the opinion of the committee that nothing has changed, there is not anything to discuss
further."
From Jean LaPierre (as RC Executive Committee): Rugby Colorado is a USA [sic] Rugby sanctioned State based
Rugby organization [sic] (SBRO). The rules and regulations of Rugby Colorado have been put forth and
approved by a majority vote of each club participating in Rugby Colorado in accordance with USA Rugby
guidelines. The rules are available to the public at RugbyColorado.com. Every participating Rugby Colorado
club is equally represented at an Annual General Meeting (AGM). All players, parents/guardians coaches,
referees and SBRO officials agree to follow the rules, regulations and policies of Rugby Colorado. As elected
administrators of Rugby Colorado, the Executive Committee is charged with regulating and enforcing the rules,
such as player eligibility, that the member clubs have voted on. Player eligibility is an internal SBRO matter and
no public statement will be made with regards to any individual circumstance [sic].
These gentlemen must think they are working for an insurance company whose motto is: "Deny, deny, deny…"
Here's what we've got:
two high school student-athletes want to play rugby, one experienced, one not;
two rugby clubs in the city in which the kids live, one operating at a high-level, one more of an
introductory-level side;
applications for transfer to Rugby Colorado so each kid could play on the level to which they can best
realize their potentials;
con. next
barbosgatebarbosgatebarbosgatebarbosgatebarbosgatebarbosgate
boulderprovoboulderprovoboulderprovoboulderprovoboulderprovoboulderprovo
the clubs' coaches, the kids' parents, the kids themselves all agreeing transfer would be best for
everyone involved;
Rugby Colorado just said "NO!"
It is troubling that a supervisory organ such as RC's Executive Committee, one supposedly dedicated to
custodianship and stewardship of the critical formative rugby stage – the teenage game – would deny
individual players and clubs the ability to reach their greatest potential, thus making the national organization,
USA Rugby, stronger. Is their secret goal a managed mediocrity where everyone equals everyone else?
Because that is not ever going to happen.
Perhaps Rugby Colorado needs to re-think its act? The double-standard, hypocrisy wherein some player
transfers are "grandfathered" and others denied is backroom hijinx of the worst sort. The intractability and
favoritism displayed by Rugby Colorado and its Executive Board has no place in the 21st century if USA Rugby is
to move forward on the world stage. But Rugby Colorado, entire unto itself, has neither the nous nor guts to
carry that tune.

Showdown at the Shea Stadium: Colorado rugby's "Showcase"
written by: Joel Makus, Rugby Atlas Arizona Scribe
March 30, 2013
Shea Stadium
Littleton, CO
Kickoff: 4:00
On a balmy Saturday afternoon, the Denver
Highlanders loaded up their travelling squad for the
arduous journey to Shea Stadium in Littleton to
test their mettle against the Denver Barbarians.
While the Highlanders are currently in the cellar,
they hoped that their time there had aged them
into a fine wine ready to be uncorked just in time
for a table-reversing finish that would improve
their standing and debilitate their longtime rivals’
place. Alas, as they dug themselves out of an early
hole only to have the Barbarians clinch the match
with a late penalty kick by Fullback Maximo De
Achaval, 31-21, it was the Barbos who would savor
the sweetness of victory as the Highlanders were
left with the bitterness of defeat and thoughts of
what might have been.
The lack of arctic weather from the previous
few weekends should have portended a more
open, flowing game with a dash of daring as each
side threw caution into the wind. Unfortunately,
the secure ball-handling and methodical approach
necessary in dire conditions was replaced by
haphazard passing and disjointed attacks that
resulted in large quantities of infractions and other
errors. After trading penalty kicks to open the
game, Highlanders flyhalf, Ewan Scott drilled a
spectacular penalty kick from 65 yards away (or 60
meters the unpatriotic) to double up the Barbos 6-
3. Trailing on their home pitch must have
awakened the Barbarians’ sense of urgency as the
duo of centers, Kyle Hitt and Mike Garrity, began to
break off chunk yardage (or chunk meterage) on
inside runs. After his sensational dummy left him
to go it alone, flyhalf Taylor Howden capped off the
assault by burrowing through multiple defenders
for a try converted by De Achaval. The Barbos built
on their success with another long Garrity sprint
deep into Highlanders territory, and after some
nice off loading by the Barbos loosies, lock Jon
Poynter dove across for the five-pointer. Moments
later, winger Phil White walked in from the weak
side of a five-meter scrum bringing the Barbarians
lead to 20-6 with 13 minutes remaining in the half.
Despite another Scott penalty before the halftime
whistle, the Highlanders still trailed by double
digits.
The second session began in much the same
way as the first ended, with the Barbos on the gas
and the Highlanders on the backpeddle. De
Achaval slotted another penalty kick, and the
Barbos looked to be on their way to another
blowout victory after Highlanders substitute
Michael Backens was left in the sin bin to think
about what he did wrong. However, the booking
forced the Highlanders to rally together, and
despite their tactical disadvantage, they turned the
momentum of the match to their favor. After
following Scott’s boot on a well-executed kick-and-
chase, the Highlanders had the Barbarians pinned
deep in their own territory and were intent on
capitalizing on their territorial gain. The
Highlanders deepest foray yet culminated in
second rower Jaime Chipman plowing his way into
the try zone, and it was deftly converted by Scott
con. next
barbosgatebarbosgatebarbosgatebarbosgatebarbosgatebarbosgate
boulderprovoboulderprovoboulderprovoboulderprovoboulderprovoboulderprovo
to bring his team back to striking distance, 23-16
Barbos with 25 minutes until full time. Sensing the
shift in momentum, Barbos Captain and 8-man,
Logan Collins slipped through the defenders out
wide where he tossed a superb inside pass to a
cutting Landon Peterson, who showed his
elusiveness in sidestepping two Highlanders,
scooting 30 meters, and dotting down for the
unconverted try.
Just when it seemed that the Barbos were
able to shake loose of the Highlanders, they rose to
the occasion with inspired attacking from outside
center Blake Davey and flanker Clinton Camp.
Camp crossed over the try line to pull the
Highlanders within a converted try with 9 minutes
to go. Refusing to accept defeat, Camp sliced
through the Barbarians defense for a 35 meter gain
before he was corralled by the pursuit.
Unfortunately for the Highlanders, it was to be the
last gasp, as De Achaval summarily delivered the
death knell from 45 meters out to form the final
tally for the victors, Barbarians 31-21.
The Highlanders alleged coach, Nigel Smith,
proclaimed that “it was a night of missed
opportunities, but we stepped it up, brought a
good spirit, and answered the Barbos strength
when the occasion rose.” Barbarians assistant
coach Karl “The Fin” Savimaki was slightly less
optimistic, but still pleased overall when he stated
that the Barbos “didn’t stick to our structures, as
the Highlanders wouldn’t let us, to their credit, but
we ground out a win and look forward to improving
a great deal against San Francisco.” While the
game was intensely contested on the pitch, Smith
summed the day up best when commenting that it
was awesome just to see the two clubs gather
together a for the post-game social without the riot
police having to be called. Highlanders Man of the
Match went to kicker extraordinaire Scott, while
Garrity garnered the honors for the Barbos.

Highlanders v Harlequins: Men's D-2
Lineout contest for possession image: trotski
On a chill and blowy Saturday afternoon, Infinity
Rugby Complex' StoveTop crackled with sport as
the division-2 Denver clubs 'Landers and 'Quins
vied for the city's rugby championship. The
Harlequins and Highlanders have been contesting
the pill for more than four decades, each match a
prime example of action-packed rugby and this one
was to be no different.
League-leading Harlequins drew first blood from a
wonscrum at the home team's 22. #9 Adam
Durica's swift supply had flyer Charlie Annerino
clear outside to jink, cross-and-dot, and it was 5-nil
travelers in the eleventh minute.
Three-quarters of the way through the first forty
after multiple maulphases inside the host 22,
second five-eighths, Steve Zaugg, made the crease
into space for the grounding that extended the
Harlequins lead to 10-nil.
Shortly afterwards Annerino outpaced the chase
into goal to gather a squibbed kick ahead, and with
his touch down and Adam's conversion, 17-0 in the
33rd minute. Highlanders got aboard when outside
center Eric Green slotted a penalty from thirty
meters out off the left post: 17-3 to the visitors.
Harlequins got the bonus-point try with an
impressive 50+ meter counter by fullback Kregg
Hyer and with Durica's conversion, the lads went
off to locker's at 24-3 after referee Erik Geib's
halftime blast.
More consistent forward play and continuity in its
backline enabled front foot possession for the
Quins, but a youthful Highlanders side showed
flashes of bright lights at times in the first forty
minutes of play.
The first ten minutes of the second stanza were a
close fought thing until Harlequins openside Matt

Hoitink peeled off a scrum won at the Highlanders
22 and sped to goal for a try and along with
Durica's conversion, the Quins had lengthened
their lead to 31-3 after 50 ticks.
Harlequins continued their tryfest with a dot by left
wing Mike Boyle two minutes later and a pair by
#13 Zaugg (60' and 62'), the center's trys
completed by Durica, and it was 50-3 for the
visitors in the 62nd minute.
Highlanders picked up the pace and got one of
their own when outside center Green crashed into
space at Quins ten meter line and into the Jester's
business district before second row Nick Rangel
grabbed ball from the breakdown and dove across
for Green's conversion: 50-10 at minute 66.
A further Harlequins touch down by inside center
Brian Perna countered by a try from Highlanders'
tighthead, Andrew Nelson at the death, and a final
of 57-15 to Quins was recorded.

Denver Harlequins have sewn up the league by going
undefeated and earning bonus point victories in every
match except for one. Haggis have come on strong this
second half of the season and now threaten runnerup
Glendale's position on the seating chart. A much-
improved Northern Colorado Flamingos club sparked lively
in their show with the Quins earlier this month and will feature in the final table sequencing, while Grizzlies
have a couple victories and Highlanders have yet to find their form in the 2012/2013 season. Initial playoff
rounds begin next month and, though the Quins are certainly the most consistent club producing the best
results in the league, it has yet to be determined whether the second-placed team on the table will travel to
the playoffs' first rounds as well.

Rites of Spring – Youth High Performance Rugby Camp
written by: Otis McGregor
What a great camp the last two days. Great turn out from the Springs and Denver. We really worked the boys
hard in the first part of the camp with a fitness test consisting of 10 & 40m timed runs followed by 90 sec. of
push-ups, my favorite, then the true test of rugby fitness, Yo-Yo run, or some call it the Beep Test, high score
15! Not bad for a bunch of young lads. James Paterson ran the boys through some of the latest techniques and
drills from Super 15 and
International Rugby for
tackling and rucking. Then
we finished up with rugby
tennis to test the boys'
skills in kicking and high
ball reaction.
Day 2 of the camp we
were joined by Paul
Emerick. Paul and James
led the boys through
numerous ball
familiarization drills and
continued to emphasize to the boys, you can never do too much ball work, every day, every time. We then
transitioned to attacking skills and decision making. This really put a test on the boys' abilities to catch, find
the best option and make a decision. After a several iterations of intense sessions with attack and follow drills,
we split into backs and forwards. Paul took the backs and focused on getting down one move-with four
options. The boys took a time or two to grasp the concept but, then quickly picked it up and really gained the
knack of the play. James took the forwards and focused on fluid pods, getting the boys to ID a gap and then
attack it. Of course with the forwards this transitioned into more tackling and rucking, can never have too
much of that either.
To wrap up the camp, we played a game of full field touch then finished off with 8 man offsides rugby across
the pitch. A complete success! The boys gained a tremendous amount of knowledge from James and Paul and

you could see a definite improvement in skills from the start to final game. We wrapped up with a camp photo
and presented Paul Emerick with the coveted Grizzlies, "It's In Our Blood" hoodie.

Changes to the TRY League:
Over the offseason there have been a few significant changes to our league. Most importantly, age group naming has
changed to even years and we have added 2 new divisions (U13 and U14). For example, last year we had U7, U9, U11,
U13, and U15. This has changed to U8, U10, U12, U13, U14, and U16. This has changed nothing as far as age group
breakdowns other than the label except for the U13 and U14 levels which are now single age divisions. See below for
appropriate age divisions.

Saturday's RDP12 win over last week's RDP12 leader, Leinster, at Royal Dublin Society. This upcomer at
The Stoop will be a bruiser with no holds barred, save for those the match officials catch - RA's call:
Harlequins 21, Ulster 20;
In the last match of the quarters, it's to be a cross-channel explosion comprised of the finest incendiaries, as
Toulon, who've been hit-or-miss lately, host Leicester Tigers, who've been hot-or-miss since 12.1.12,
going 8-2 in the Premiership with the losses coming at Quins and then at Welford Road v Premiership
leaders, Saracens. Gonna be a goodie, ya shure you bet - RA's call: Toulon 33, Leicester 31

Zebre failed to close the deal in its favor once again as Edinburgh
claimed road victory at Stadio XXV April via Greig Laidlaw's
precision penalty production of a sloppy evening; the hosts
led 7-6 at the midpoint, but a three-pointer by Scotland's
scrumhalf made up the numbers, 7-9, happily for the
travelers; Edinburgh are now on two close-wins running;
Glasgow outscored Munster by a ratio of three trys to one, and the
Irish province grounded twice, enroute to 51-24 home,
bonus-point victory;
Ulster surprised hot-rising Leinster at the RDS, 22-18, to put
Glasgow back at the top of the heap

Biarritz did the correct thing to obtain the home result, 33-19,
over a Grenoble side that just may be out of the

Castres pipped Perpignan on the road, 21-20, and the last

Toulouse edged Racing in Paris, 27-26, and stymied the recent

Super XV: weekend 3/29-31
Reds enjoyed their first Super Rugby success in Dunedin as they pipped the Highlanders, 34-33, en route to
the bonus-point at Forsyth Barr; the visitors form #9, Will Genia, touched down Reds fourth try and a
pair of late penalties by flyhalf Quade Cooper provided for the victory over the Highlanders side; clever
Cooper terry kicks and huge skirmish work in the host business district meant front foot action by
the travelers in the early stages and a 7-nil lead; Highlanders responded at the middle part of the first
forty with Colin Slade true on two penalties and the conversion of 8-man Elliot Dixon's grounding,
which had the home team up 13-7, but Reds were able to reclaim the lead by halftime, 21-16, and
thereafter never trailed;
Hurricanes never either trailed the visiting Kings in Wellington as they lowered the boom on the monarchists,
46-30, in a lively affair that saw nine total trys touched down by the clubs; a grounding by outside five-
eighths, Ronnie Cooke, and its conversion by #10 Demetri Catrakilis in the 49 th minute meant a close
chase then at 29-23, but a touch down by the 'Canes young flanker, Brad Shields, at 64' followed by an
intercept, streak-and-dot by flyer Alapati Leiua (72'), closed the deal for the hosts;
Chiefs broke open a close (9-6) contest in the second period with a pair of converted trys by replacement front
row Ben Tameifuna (46') and outside center Richard Kahui (62') to make the scores 23-9; a late

grounding by young Blues' flyer George Moala near time, and its conversion by relief standoff, Baden
Kerr, meant a losing bonus point to the visitors;
Brumbies flyhalf Christian Lealiifano, good for 18 markers from his bounteous boot, struck the winning
sticksplitter at the death to preserve victory for the home side over Bulls at 23-20; the Australian
Conference leaders never trailed, though there were two instances of drawn scores at 3-all (20') and
20-the-pair in the 79th minute; a try by fullback Robbie Coleman at the end of the initial stanza
completed the tally for the mob, while trys by wing Jurgen Visser (48') and center JJ Engelbrecht (78')
along with a tenner from the toe of presumptive Springbok #10, Morne Steyn, made up the numbers
for the travelers; Pat who?
It took a minute for the home side to fire up the flight engines and Melbourne Rebels won through 34
minutes plus, 6-3, but then Cheetahs did what they do best, run; and they ran in a handful in 34-16
victory at Free State Stadium ;
Crusaders were poor guests in Capetown, topping their hosts 19-14; Stormers had three minutes of multiple-
phase attack at the end in Crusaders business district, but an awesome display of consummate
stoppage by the travelers provided the result;
Waratahs just managed to get past Western Force, 23-19, at Allianz Stadium; 'Tahs scrumhalf Brendan
McKibbin was good for 18 with six penalty goals slotted and Adam Ashley-Cooper scored the try, while
South African Sias Ebersohn struck 14 on four penalties and the conversion of #15 Alfie Mafi's power-
try;
