PRIME MINISTER

MESSAGE FROM THE PRIME MINISTER

BICYCLE NSW SPRING CYCLE 2015

I am pleased to provide this message for the Bicycle NSW Spring Cycle 2015.

Now in its 32nd year, Spring Cycle is Bicycle NSW’s premier cycling event and Sydney’s largest recreational bike ride.

It is an opportunity for participants to test their fitness, enjoy the warmth of spring and ride past some of Sydney’s most iconic landmarks.

As a keen cyclist, I know there is nothing better than starting the day with exercise because it does wonders for the mind, body and spirit.

I am inspired by everyone who gets on a bike and has a go, and I want more Australians to get outdoors and get moving because exercise contributes so much to a healthy life.

This year, I am pleased that Spring Cycle will raise funds for TAD Disability’s Freedom Wheels Program as well as the Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

I commend Bicycle NSW for its commitment to creating a better environment for cycling and wish all participants a safe and enjoyable ride.

The Hon Tony Abbott MPPrime Minister of Australia

“Congratulations to everyone taking part in this year’s SPRING CYCLE – what a perfect opportunity to see Sydney at its bike riding best! The City of Sydney is proud to support this annual event which is one of the best opportunities for people of all ages and abilities, from all over Sydney, to enjoy bike riding. Whether you’re tackling the 12 kilometre Sydney City Ride, or the more ambitious 50 or 105 kilometre journeys, I wish you luck and hope you have a wonderful time.” Clover Moore Lord Mayor

“I am delighted to welcome all participants and spectators to SPRING CYCLE. For more than 30 years, SPRING CYCLE has promoted cycling as an active and healthy way to get around, and has increased cycling’s popularity throughout Sydney and across NSW. Whether you are hopping on a bike for the first time, or were part of the 10,000 who took part last year, SPRING CYCLE offers something very special and rewarding for each individual. On behalf of the NSW Government, I sincerely thank the many volunteers for making this event possible, and wish all participants a safe and enjoyable journey.”

2015 SPRING CYCLEPresented by Bicycle NSW

Bicycle NSW is pleased to present the 2015 SPRING CYCLE, proudly supported by Roads and Maritime Services.

This Ride Guide contains important information to help you make the most of your SPRING CYCLE on Sunday October 18.

Since 1984, SPRING CYCLE has been attracting riders of all ages and abilities on bikes of all shapes and sizes. By showcasing Sydney’s growing cycling infrastructure and facilities, the event promotes cycling as a viable, sustainable, recreation and transport option, while highlighting the importance of a healthy, community lifestyle.

We are excited to welcome our new major partner Roads and Maritime, as well as a number of other new partners who join our existing sponsors, to create a bigger and better event in 2015. We are also excited to see the SPRING CYCLE as the flagship event for the City of Sydney’s Sydney Rides Festival held from October 10-31 and the Sydney Olympic Park Authority’s Fitness & Health Expo between October 16-18.

New this year is the strategic change to the route of the 105km Bikebug Challenge Ride fuelled by Etixx. This incredible new trail challenges our participants’ cycling performance with a century plus journey. Participants will ride across the Sydney Harbour Bridge, past the Sydney Opera House and traverse the diverse Inner West before heading out to Western Sydney Parklands via picturesque Parramatta and Prospect Dam, before heading to the finish at Sydney Olympic Park. The 50km Polygon Classic Ride and 12km Sydney City Ride have some minor changes so make sure you check the route maps and follow directions on the course.

We want you to finish your SPRING CYCLE ride on a high so we have invested our efforts to create two fantastic and fun festival finish sites. There will be a hub of celebration, entertainment, food, drinks, live music, and activities for kids and adults at both Pirrama Park (Pyrmont) and Cathy Freeman Park (Sydney Olympic Park), when you cross the finish line. Participants finishing at Sydney Olympic Park even have FREE access to the Sydney Health & Fitness Expo.

SPRING CYCLE is brought to you by the dedicated staff of Bicycle NSW with the significant support of a variety of partners, sponsors and an amazing team of over 500 volunteers.

We thank you for your participation and encourage you to become a member of Bicycle NSW to help create a better environment for cycling. Most importantly, have an amazing SPRING CYCLE on October 18!

You don’t have to dress up like a superhero to be a hero at this year’s SPRING CYCLE. Just create a user page on Everyday Hero and share a special message of inspiration, start a blog or share images/videos to raise awareness of your chosen charity. Your page (individual or team page) allows you to invite friends to make donations and leave messages of support. The donations you receive will be tallied and displayed on your public page to help you gauge your progress and encourage contributions. Donations are automatically processed and transferred to your selected charity or cause. It couldn’t be easier!

To learn more and register to fundraise for the Official Spring Cycle Charities - TAD Disability Services and The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, go to springcycle.com.au/get-involved/fundraising.

TADFor most children, their first bike ride is a rite of passage. But for children with a disability, this can seem unachievable. TAD Disability Services is the only charity in NSW which designs and builds custom equipment to enable people with disabilities to lead more independent lives. TAD’s Freedom Wheels Bikes enable children with disabilities to ride a bike when it was never thought possible. Many of these children cannot walk but they can ride. These special bikes are designed to suit the individual child’s age, height, weight and physical and cognitive abilities. Each Freedom Wheels Bike is individually designed by our therapists and built by our TAD volunteers to their exact needs. With the support of riders in the Spring Cycle, we are able to provide these assessments free of charge and subsidise the cost of the Freedom Wheels Bikes to families who often face overwhelming financial hurdles. At TAD, we believe that every individual has the right to equal opportunity and affordable equipment.

The Children’s Hospital at WestmeadRiding a bike is a simple pleasure that is often missing from the life of a sick child as they battle illness or injury. The Children’s Hospital at Westmead cares for over 75,000 sick children and their families each year. We recognise that whether a child has a broken leg, cancer or needs a liver transplant, they all have one thing in common – they want the best chance to lead a normal, healthy childhood. You can help a child along the road to recovery by supporting The Children’s Hospital at Westmead this Spring Cycle. Every dollar raised helps to directly save young lives by purchasing advanced medical equipment, helping to employ the world’s best doctors, funding ground-breaking research into causes and cures for childhood diseases and supporting families in their time of greatest need.

2015 SPRING CYCLEPresented by Bicycle NSW

One of the easiest things to overlook in your preparation for SPRING CYCLE is checking that your bike is ready to ride. Here is a simple checklist to review to ensure your bike is fit for service. Most importantly, if you have any doubts as to the condition of your bike, check in with one of the SPRING CYCLE bike shops before Sunday 18 October 2015 and receive 10% off a full service.

From the bottom up!

1. TYRESPoorly maintained tyres increase the chance of getting a flat tyre. • Check your tyres for any splits, bald spots or sharp objects like glass. • Ensure that they are fully pumped up to the recommended pressure

(this will be written on the side of your tyre).

2. CHAINHaving a clean and well lubricated chain is one of the simplest ways to make your SPRING CYCLE smoother and more enjoyable. • Spray bicycle specific degreaser onto your chain and gear cluster.• With a disposable cloth, firmly hold the chain at the bottom of the

dérailleur and spin the pedals backwards. Continue to spin the pedals until you have removed all of the built up dirt and grime.

• Allow 15-20 minutes for the degreasing agent to evaporate and fully dry.

• Apply bicycle chain specific lubricant, in a similar fashion to the degreaser. Be sure to wipe off any excess with a clean disposable cloth.

3. BRAKESHaving smooth, functional brakes is one of the most important things to check on your bike and is essential for a safe SPRING CYCLE. However, adjusting brakes can be difficult so please, if in doubt, ask one of our recommended bike shops. • Check front and rear brake pads for wear. Most pads will have a

‘wearline’ that indicates remaining pad life.• Make sure that the wheel is fully seated in the fork and frame so there is

even space between each pad and the wheel. • Make sure that the brake cable is the correct length so that the lever

does not come back too close to the handlebar.

36

4. GEARSOnce your chain is clean, check to see if your gears run smoothly. Without a bike stand this is most easily checked by riding slowly on flat ground. • Shift through the gears, 1 at a time, while pedalling slowly and

consistently. • Check that there is nothing interrupting the cable. A kink, or broken

strand or even dirt.

5. STEERING, HANDLEBARS and STEMProper adjustment of the front end of your bicycle will ensure a safe SPRING CYCLE and will help increase your control whilst enjoying your ride.• Check that the front wheel is in alignment with the handlebars and

stem.• Ensure that all of the bolts on the stem and handlebar are evenly

tightened.• Hold the front brake and slowly rock the bike backwards and forwards.

There should be no movement in between any parts in the front end of the bike.

2015 SPRING CYCLEPresented by Bicycle NSW

To ensure that you and your fellow riders have an enjoyable and safe 2015 SPRING CYCLE, please adopt safe, courteous riding at all times by following these basic principles:

1. SLOW DOWN. Relax and enjoy your ride. Remember, it is NOT a race!

2. Obey all event signage or instructions given by the police, route marshals and other event personnel.

3. Comply with the NSW road rules and regulations at all times – not all roads are closed for the event.

4. Extra care is required when riding downhill. Slow down and ride carefully.

5. During the ride please keep to the left when not overtaking.6. Never ride more than two abreast.7. Always give hand signals when turning or stopping. 8. Look behind to ensure it is safe before you make any sudden changes. 9. Wear a correctly fitted Australian Standards approved helmet at all

times. 10. Wear bright clothing to make it easier for other road users to see you. 11. Ring your bell and call “passing on your right” when overtaking other

cyclists. Always overtake on the right.12. Call “stopping” and raise your hand if you are slowing down rapidly

or stopping - this reduces the risk of someone running into the back of you.

13. Keep at least two bike lengths behind the cyclist in front when riding in a group. Remember, if you tip the wheel in front it is almost always you who falls!

Keep up and keep pedalling! While we encourage you to have a break at the rest stops and soak up the amazing scenes and atmosphere of Sydney, please remember that the route and rest stops for the SPRING CYCLE will only remain open for specific times. After these times, the route and roads will be progressively returned to regular road conditions. Please follow instructions of any official event personnel when you are asked to move along.

Can’t make the distance? If you’re unable to meet the route cut-off times or need to depart the

designated SPRING CYCLE route at any time, you do so as a solo, unaccompanied cyclist under regular road conditions without any event support. Should this occur, you are no longer a participant in the 2015 SPRING CYCLE and we ask that you remove your official Rider Number.

We do provide a Sweep Bus with bike trailer for those who are unable to complete the ride. The Sweep Bus will drop you and your bicycle to the nearest train station so that you can make independent transport arrangements back home or to the finish line.

Take Care!• Do not stop on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. This is for your safety. We

have thousands of riders to get across so it is important that you keep riding and do not stop on the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

• Ride slowly down the Pier St off ramp as you will need to make a turn at the foot of the hill.

• For those on the 12km Sydney City Ride when finishing at the Pirrama Park Finish Site be sure to roll well past the Finishing Arch and slowly into the Bike Parking area. This keeps the road clear for finishing riders.

For 50km and 105km riders:• Take care crossing Darley Road in Leichhardt. Traffic control will be at

this point but it is a busy road with no traffic lights and you must stop before crossing.

• The turn from Queen Street into Pomeroy Street at North Strathfield is a busy roundabout followed by a downhill with traffic lights – please keep to the left.

• Ride in single file and slowly on the cycleway under Homebush Bay Drive as you will negotiate a sharp turn in this section of the ride.

• Take care exiting the cycleway from John Whitton Bridge onto Bay Drive as you will need to perform a sharp U-turn onto the road.

• Take care when you make the sharp right turn on the cycleway’s approach to the Silverwater Bridge. You will need to approach the turn slowly and ride in single file across the bridge.

• Take care when merging into live traffic on Marist St once you’ve left the cycleway.

• Be mindful on Byrnes Ave within Parramatta Park as you will be sharing the road with participants in the Pink Triathlon.

• Take care when you cross on-road to the right lane on Hawkesbury

Road to make the right turn into Alexandra Ave.• As you ride through Blaxland Riverside Park in Sydney Olympic Park,

be mindful of members of the public on the cycleways and throughout the park, especially children, as they enjoy the kids play area. Sydney Olympic Park pathways are shared by cyclists and pedestrians.

Cycling Etiquette

On Shared Paths• Give way to pedestrians at all times. • Move off the path if you need to stop. • Be courteous and always show mutual respect to other path users. • Slow down near children, playgrounds, shops etc. • Ring your bell to warn others you are approaching. • Give clear hand signals. • Keep left where possible. • Be predictable. • Indicate hazards to other riders. For example, a bollard that they may not see because you’re in front.

On Roads• Be courteous and show mutual respect to all other road users.• Constantly scan the road ahead and the surrounding environment. • Avoid riding in driver’s blind spots. If you cannot see the driver, the

driver cannot see you. • Do not hold onto vehicles. • Keep left, when not overtaking, where practicable. Do not wride more

than two abreast. Use the road shoulder or left-hand lane to avoid obstructing other road users.

• Avoid riding too close to parked cars to reduce the chance of colliding with pedestrians or the opening of car doors.

• If riding uphill in a group, be considerate of other road users and ride in single file.

• Give clear hand signals. • Be predictable. • Do not use your phone or listen to music while riding. • Indicate hazards to other riders. • Use bicycle lanes where available. • Red lights, stop and give way signs must be obeyed.
